I agree... I like BR and am a supporter... the only thing I disagree with his methods is that he talked too much about Suarez in the media. He shouldn't have come out and said in the media that Suarez needed to apologize, say it behind closed doors, lay down the law. Right it seems like the whole world is looking at LFC and say that oh they have internal turmoil, they will fail again this season. Let Suarez blabber to the press alone and keep a dignified silence. It will make Suarez look idiotic.

His sheep like posts mimic exactly what some of the conspiracy theorists he obviously looks up to. That's where he's coming from, no original point of his own (although that's what he wants you to believe but he's just another sheep who thinks he's clever because those views of Rodger bashing aren't exactly the norm over here).

I'd love to know what BR and LS talked about in their meeting because after that LS was allowed back to train with the first team and he was smiling and joking with team mates once again like the LS of the old. Anyway, I hope he stays for at least one season to help us get back to CL and stays on after that. I know winning games is a team work and not individual brilliance but with LS as part of your team, the team work will be even better. I hope we can get Willian, that would be an extra boost to the side.

I agree. Things could have gone disasterously these last few months, but BR has held firm, and a nod to the owners for letting BR show his worth, throwing their weight behind him when needed. BR has used the clubs history, strength and unity to great effect in his recent PR dealings and where once things looked a little dodgy, he's stood by our philosophies to win what will prove to be a moral win. The outcome may be undecided, but no matter what happens from here, we can kick off tomorrow with pride and morale intact.

Well done BR

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that nothing less than Champions' League football is acceptable for Liverpool.

The Reds boss refuses to hide behind a stark new financial reality at Anfield that has forced him to slash his wage bill, decimate his first team squad and fall way behind the monied might of the Premier League big four.

Yet even if they can no longer splash the cash as they did over the past decade to ensure they can compete with the likes of champions Manchester United, Rodgers enters the season adamant there will be no moaning on Merseyside...and no lowering of their aim.

The manager believes a top four place is a must for Liverpool given the history of the club and the expectation that generates - and he wouldn't have it any other way.

"The measure of Liverpool will always be the Champions League and the big European competitions - for the length of time I'm here and when I move on for the next manager coming in," he explained.

"I can stand here and make excuses, I can say City have spent £90 odd million and other teams already in there have got stronger and reinforced as a group, but that's not going to solve anything, it won't help my job here.

"If you start to think about it being unfair then you just anchor yourself and it's hard to move on then. That pressure to deliver is what you expect at a big club, of course it's difficult, but it's why we are here.

"If you are in those top echelons you can maybe attract another type of player but I'm not going to bleat and moan about it being unfair, I just need to get on with the job and do the best I can.

"We have got to fight for our life, with our play. Play with the type of football that can maybe be different and get players in who are hungry."
Rodgers was tasked with the job of slashing the Reds' wage bill when he came in, and carrying out the unenviable task of chopping the dead wood which weighed so heavily on finances.

It is a stark contrast to the heady days over the last decade when Liverpool chased glory by trying to outspend the likes of United and Chelsea on wages...a plan that brought the club to its knees on the verge of bankruptcy.

Liverpool's current owners admitted to a state of shock when they unearthed a balance sheet that paid salaries well in excess of £100,000 a week to defenders and goalkeepers and reserve midfielders who were considered far from marquee signings.

In his first season, Rodgers was tasked with stopping the madness, and he slashed the wage bill by making savings of around £30m in his first year, and setting up a new pay structure which saw only the star names like Suarez and Gerrard given the massive money.

And only now has found the capacity to quietly strengthen his squad with some smart signings such as Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas, as well as give new contracts to the likes of Gerrard, Daniel Agger and Suarez.

Rodgers though, insisted he came into the role with his eyes wide open...and ready to face such a stern challenge, even if it meant slipping behind the top four English clubs in terms of spending power.

"I think when you are managing change, especially the change that is needed here and what was being asked of myself in the job in terms of the financial element, I think of course it's a huge ask," he added.

"But that's the job, I knew the job I was coming into. Liverpool has to be a sustainable club and four years ago it almost went into administration. So that's part of it.

"It should and doesn't change the pressures though. That's why I wouldn't want to be at any other club. The pressures that come with being the manager of Liverpool is part of working at brilliant club.

"There's a lot work of work that has been done. A lot finance has been rejigged and when he have to manage that the best we can to compete. But we have to believe we can compete."

Rodgers will take his new look team into today's season opener against Stoke telling his players they can aim for a top four finish...and promising further signings to help them in that daunting task.

And he believes if he can find a couple more gems, that aim is not so outrageous:  "We need quality. We just want to add that. But that's always been the sort of plan really.

"We are confident in the next couple of weeks we can add to the team. And if we do that we are going to be in a real good position. Where we sit at the minute is a real good base and a couple of more it could really help our chances."

Rodgers will be boosted today by the return to fitness of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, and both should be in the squad to face Stoke.

Striker Daniel Sturridge is rated 80 per cent fit but appears to have shown enough to warrant inclusion tomorrow, with striker Luis Suarez suspended.

Brek Shea is missing for Stoke with a knee injury while fellow midfielder Jamie Ness is also out of manager Mark Hughes’ first competitive game in charge.

Expectation. It is the unseen burden that every Liverpool manager must carry, a weight that buckles the shoulders of the strongest of characters.

As the new season dawns, it springs eternally in the mind of every follower, every commentator and even every detractor, because no matter the realities of their financial position, the club is expected to challenge for the top four and beyond.

It is a serious financial reality of course. The Reds are no longer the big hitters of even the past decade, when they were consistently amongst the top three wage spenders in English football.

Now, they are - at best - fifth highest wage spenders, and in all probability actually below Spurs in terms of the salaries they can tempt new signings with, let alone the two Manchesters, Chelsea and Arsenal.

But no matter. Liverpool must still aim for the top four, given their heritage, given the expectation of every football person, and if the manager doesn't like that, then he'd be wise to find another job pronto.

The manager

Manager Brendan Rodgers of Liverpool
Feel the pressure: Brendan Rodgers has plenty of expectation on his shoulders
Andrew Powell
Brendan Rodgers may not actively enjoy such an imbalanced challenge, but at least he never moans about it, never cries it's unrealistic. Instead, he has quietly gone about the business of trying to find an alternative solution.

He has cut the wage bill by around £25m A YEAR, over the past 12 months, and got rid of some players on mind-boggling money that simply don't command such salaries.

Yet there is still some dead wood there, even the ones out on loan bleeding the club drier when they are no longer contributing at all...because Liverpool must still pay part of their wages just to offload them.

In the long term though, it will allow the club to compete, because eventually when those players are gone, they can concentrate their precious cash on attracting real stars...players who can make a difference.

New signings

That is the plan from Rodgers and his recruitment team. To sign hungry players, on relatively modest salaries and pay them more when they deliver. But also to tempt those who can make a difference with better money, and incentive-based rewards.

Iago Aspas is a perfect example, as was Philippe Coutinho before him. The new signings are not household names, but they have quality and they have hunger. They also have a technique that fits perfectly with what the manager wants to do.

Luis Alberto is one for the future, but possesses the same audacious skills as the others, while Kolo Toure is one for the squad, offering depth and experience at a fairer price.

As for Simon Mignolet, he may be replacing an all-time Liverpool great in the admirable Pepe Reina, but many seasoned observers were convinced it was time for a change between the sticks.

All the new signings though, are less important than the presence of one man who wants to leave, but increasingly looks as though he will say.

We have covered the saga of Luis Suarez in this column so many times over the summer, it's been like Groundhog Day, but for what it's worth, his tactic in telling convincing Arsenal of one thing, when the reality was always another, was a ludicrous, senseless position.

It is surprising Arsene Wenger fell for it so naively, surprising nobody around Arsenal stopped to ask themselves why Liverpool were so adamant, so vehement, that the contract clause didn't exist. Even from a distance, it was obvious Suarez was spinning a line to the London club, and amazing they took so long to realise.

Now, we have arrived at a position where he obviously doesn't have a clause allowing him to leave, and won't go to the Emirates unless Wenger is prepared to throw in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as part of any deal.

Key player

That ain't happening, which brings us nicely to Liverpool's key man for next season, which is Suarez. Of course. As Steven Gerrard said, without him, they can forget the top four.

Luis Suarez trains

Splash News
But if he somehow settles down and accepts he's not leaving (which increasingly seems to be the case), if he realises it is a World Cup year and his long term personal ambition can be best served aiming towards that, then he can still be a significant figure for the club.

Carlos Tevez has shown us there is always a way back, no matter how ugly the dispute, how contentious the comments. So as much as it sticks in the throat, there is a very real possibility Suarez will be accepted back at Anfield.

If he plays anything like last season, then Liverpool have a chance of sneaking into the top four. They play some impressive football at times, and with the skilful front line they could boast with Suarez in it, then they can beat any team.

For some - this writer included - it would seem almost a sin for Liverpool's long suffering fans to be asked to welcome the Uruguayan back as though nothing had happened, but this is a sport and a business that has long sold out the last of its morals, so reality suggests, if the striker can help lift that burden of expectation, then all can be forgiven and forgotten.

Predictions

With Suarez fit and motivated (and free of suspension), the prediction is a top four finish for Liverpool. That though, is a big ask for a player who finds ever more impressive ways of not playing football matches.

I think if Rodgers says less in public, and concentrates more on his job, we'll do better this season.
Less of the PR cack we saw last year please....

Now BR is looking into Willian and Leandro Damiao as a backup if we lose Willian to Spurs. IMO, I'd prefer Liverpool to sign Damiao than Willian. Because Damiao is a clinical striker and right now we only have ONE striker who is clinical enough and he can be injury prone(Sturridge) and Suarez, there is still a chance he could be gone by 2nd Sept. Willian is more of a left winger and we have enough good players who can play in that role, guys like Assaidi, Coutinho, Sterling and Ibe. If we are to get a wing man, it would be a right winger to replace Downing.

Not sure that Rodgers really knows what he is doing with his transfer targets. His concentration on mid-field players is misplaced. We have a much bigger need to strengthen the forward line and the defence. Both Agger and Suarez could leave at any time, if we are to believe the transfer speculation in the press. We already have Ibe and Sterling pushing for a slot on the wing, Hederson and Allen fighting over a central mid-field berth.
If anything in mid-field we need a mid lying enforcer to supplement Lucas, we do not need Willian. i agree with the isea of Leandro Damiao as a better positional bet.
But some serious central defensive reinforcement is an absolute must.
