I personally don't read too much into stuff like that. Professional footballers admire any club which will further their career and bank balance (ie the main criteria is are they in the Champions League and will they give me a fat and long contract?). We've reached two Champions League finals in three years and we've got supposedly cashed up new owners so I reckon most players in Europe would "admire" us.

True enough Bigmick. But at least it looks like he's making the right noise.

I saw him play at the world cup. He's fast and can put a decent cross in. However, I felt that he plays with his head down a bit too much at times.

Anyway, the world cup isn't exactly a true measure of a player's ability to cut it at Liverpool as we learn with Diouf. Keeping my fingers crossed as well.

This is a translated resume of an article on www.romaniansoccer.ro (probably taken from some Romanian sport journal - which are not to be trusted, but here it goes anyway)

Florent Malouda confirms contact with FC Liverpool ( Date: 07.06.2007 )

French international Florent Malouda, of Olympique Lyon, confirms negociations between Lyon and FC Liverpool for a transfer .

"There was a contact with Liverpool, although I do not know what Lyon's intentions are, explained the French in the English press. "Why not Liverpool? It's a great club", declared Malouda.

L'Equipe wrote two days ago that the english club wants to buy Malouda, they mentioned that Lyon would ask for the midfielder 25 million euro.

Arsenal is also interested in the player.

I also found the L'Equipe article it said:
Malouda parle avec les Reds : Le milieu offensif de Lyon Florent Malouda a admis dans le S*n paru jeudi un «contact» avec le récent finaliste de la Ligue des champions, Liverpool. «Il y a eu un contact avec Liverpool même si je ne sais pas s'ils ont montré directement leur intérêt à Lyon», a expliqué l'international Français au tabloïd britannique.
- briefly translated: his declaration to the S*n was "There was contact with Liverpool but I do not know if they showed their interest directly to Lyon"

Quite a different story in French language. I wonder what the English version looks like  :D

Thats the problem with a lot of stories in the English media.  So many are just taken from European media and translated however the translation is totally different.  Thats why I am not surprised when a player in interviewed in his native tongue and then when it gets back to England his words are twisted in all kinds of ways.

Florent Malouda claims Liverpool and Chelsea have contacted Lyon to enquire about the winger.

The French international is looking to leave Lyon over the summer in search of a new challenge in a different league.

Liverpool and Chelsea were both reported to be keen, but the Premiership pair have now initiated first contact.

Malouda insists he has no preference of where he goes and is now just waiting for more news from the French champions.

"I have talked with Lyon officials. There are no offers yet, but it is true there has been direct contact. Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest," he told L'Equipe.

"I don't know how it will be finalised. But in my mind it is certain I will leave.

"At Chelsea there is Didier Drogba and all the rest. But at Liverpool, (Rafa) Benitez is a great coach too, and the team has played in two Champions League finals in three years.

"To me the most important thing will be the desire shown by the club. To move abroad, you really have to be wanted.

"I believe it will still need some time. But if the deal is good for Lyon, I believe they won't try to keep me."

Like I have said before.  £10m is not gonna be enough..

That quotes an important one.  Until Lyon get there money Malouda will not move on.

So funny how when this malouda story first broke elements of the english media would write "Liverpool close in on malouda" or "Malouda to sign for reds".  Now we hear chelsea have enquired and any deal looks quite a way off at the moment.

SSN today:

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed he is waiting on a call from an unnamed English club regarding the possible transfer of Florent Malouda.

The France international has previously claimed that both Chelsea and Liverpool have shown their interest, and Lyon now expect further developments in the coming hours.

Malouda has stated his desire to leave Stade Gerland in the summer in search of a new challenge abroad, but Aulas has underlined any potential suitors must match Lyon's asking price.

"About Florent, his transfer fee remains at €25million (£17million)," Aulas told L'Equipe.

"Maybe we will have some news on Tuesday as an English club has to call me soon."

still dont know about him because ive never really watched him play. People tell me he's good, but is he £17mil good?

I would be shocked if the club has agreed to match Lyon's transfer fee.  Jean-Michel Aulus sticking to his guns as usual.  Probably chelsea who will get close to that fee request.  Personally I wouldnt be disappointed if the we paid £17 mil for Malouda.  Ribery went for £16 mil and it can be argued that Malouda has been far more consitent than Ribery so Lyon have a point in demanding such a fee.

although malouda is a very good player personally i wudn't buy him let chelsea have him there are far considerable players in france that wud be cheaper and better!!!Benitez's pursuit of Malouda to test Liverpool resolve
By Andy Hunter
Published: 29 May 2007
The France international Florent Malouda has emerged as a test of Liverpool's transfer resolve this summer with Rafael Benitez hoping to beat a host of leading European clubs to the £10m-rated Lyon midfielder.

"We can sign two top class targets for €15 - €20m [£10m - £13.5m] right now," the Liverpool manager revealed during the remarkable onslaught on Anfield's transfer policy that followed defeat in the European Cup final last week and it is understood the 26-year-old, recently voted the Players' Player of the Year in France, is one of the candidates the Spaniard had in mind as he appealed for swift and decisive action from the club's new American owners.

Benitez's scouting department tracked Malouda throughout last season when 10 league goals in 27 starts helped the former Liverpool manager - and now former Lyon manager - Gérard Houllier deliver a sixth consecutive title. He has since informed Lyon that he wishes to end his four-year career there, despite being under contract until 2011, and Liverpool have made their interest clear to a left midfielder who has also been linked with moves to Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Milan and Juventus.

Established in the French national team and ambitious to play abroad, Malouda represents the calibre of signing Benitez requested from George Gillett and Tom Hicks during what he heralded as a pivotal summer in Liverpool's history. The Spaniard also warned Liverpool they must move quickly to beat their rivals in the transfer market, and it would represent a statement of intent from the Americans - far more effectively than their public assurances have done - if they can conclude a deal in the face of intense competition for the Lyon winger.

Benitez has denied that a prolific goalscorer is the obvious answer to Liverpool's current shortcomings and is instead intent on improving the supply to his forward line, having informed left midfielders Bolo Zenden and Mark Gonzalez they are free to leave.

Malouda rose to international prominence during last summer's World Cup when, having been omitted from France's first group game, he impressed as an ever-present and won the penalty that enabled Zinedine Zidane to open the scoring against Italy in the final. The winger has maintained his form at club level, scoring three times in the Champions League campaign, and Aulas has declared that any deal must be concluded within the next month to avoid the disruption caused when Michael Essien and Mahamadou Diarra left at the tail-end of previous summers.

"This year I will make the decision," vowed the Lyon chairman. "Late departures put us in danger. If Eric [Abidal] or Florent leave, and in the worst case only one will leave, it will only be before 30 June."

Benitez received some positive news yesterday when the Marseilles president, Pape Diouf, confirmed his club remain keen on signing Liverpool striker Djibril Cissé on a permanent transfer. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Stade Vélodrome where he scored 14 goals in 26 appearances after recovering from a career-threatening broken leg, and Liverpool hope to recoup some of their £14m outlay on the forward - still their club record transfer fee - to swell their manager's budget.

Liverpool have agreed a deal to bring in two young Hungarian strikers this summer. Krisztian Nemeth, 18, and Andras Simon, 17, who both starred for their country in last year's Uefa Under-17 championships, will move to Merseyside from MTK Hungaria. this is from the independent website

As I said before, you just can't do good business with Lyon.
Aulas will always demand extortionate fees for his players and it will not chance.

We better look at any other club than Lyon.

The question we need to ask ourselves is this:

"Are we prepared to spend over the odds in order to sign the players we want?"

And I think Rafa's answer to that would most often be:

"Not on your nelly."
