saint...barry would join Liverpool even if he was told to play in goal. There's more prestige, more money (probably) and more coverage for the lad and the only reason I want Barry at left back, is because our central midfielders as a collective unit are the best in the premiership whereas our left back position is rather average at best. Teams around us have better left backs than ourselves...Evra, Cole, Clichy, Lescott, Barry (if played there) Warnock, Garrido (man city) McCartney (west ham) I'd say only Portsmouth out of the top 10 don't have a left back I'd take ahead of Riise/Aurelio. Herman Hriedasson, isn't for me a great left back, he's a good centre half though.

The thing is though John, if it was a left back we were after, we could get a better left back than Barry for a lot less money. Bridge would only cost about £5/6 million. If you are paying £10million we could get a topclass Leftback rather than someone who "can play there".

Bridge is never a better left back than barry is

Barry is a quality left back, he has been playing there since he was young, in left midfield and left back, this central midfield role, he has been playing there for 2 years, so people say he is the best in central midfield which is absolutely wrong! his strengths will show when he is either playing left midfield or left back, and if we get him as a left back then it would be excellent

Apologies to all, thought it was just another rumour thread, as this target (see thread renamed above) is now confirmed in the echo (see below) then it's fair play.

i think if barry does come it will be as a midfielder. and if needs be he can play LB or LM in much the same way as Carra can play RB or Gerrard RM.

The only way I can see Alonso staying if we get Barry (and barry isnt our 1st choice LB) is that Rafa was to use this formation of 3 central midfielders next season and to help with rotation/injuries we need 4 quality midfielders and he feels lucas isn't good enough.

I cant see us using barry in midfield whilst keeping what we've got, or we'd have:

Gerrard, Masherano, Alonso, Barry, Lucas, Plessis for 2 / 3 positions.

-

BUt I think it also depends on the deal. I suspect we using Carson as bait at the mo.. kinda a carson + £3mil... and if they dont bite... maybe straight swap for crouch? - IMO carsen +£3mil would be a great deal for us

Looks like barry would become our 1st signing...

10 million pounds ? More like carson + 2 or 3 million pounds for barry...  :nod

If rafa pulls this off....then it would be an awesome move. Just hope rafa doesn't intend barry to play as a left back or worse a left winger...... We need pacy players there.

Also, he is versitile, we could have alot of options during games or in the course of the season if we have injuries, we could play barry as an LB, LM or DM

How many caps has Barry won at Left back Metalhead? How many has Bridge won?

Bridge is a much better left back than Barry ever was or will be. As a left back Barry was no better than what we have already.

Now I know what your going to say, that Bridge only won his caps because Cole was injured, and against croatia he was absolutely terrible, was off pace, positioning was poor, etc... Barry is a better left back because he can keep the ball better than bridge, He also attacks, whips in beautiful crosses and we would have at least a good set piece taker! Also, Bridge is too injury prone, I wouldn't want him mate.

But The point is Bridge won the caps - Barry wasn't even mentioned as a possible when he played LB.  I agree Bridge is injury prone but better. For £10million we could get MUCH better than Barry at LB. Left mid, CM or DM I think Barry is a cracking player - defensive player....... not so much.

I think Barry would be good signing and if he wasnt champs league then no doubt he will be arriving unless the teams above us make a move.

Given Gerrard has played along side him in recent England games he has perhaps had a word with Rafa about him and they have decided to move in.

Versatile, experienced and a proven premiership player who gets goals and no doubt better than most on our books already.

He does'nt score that many mate!
Hes hit 8 this season,im not exactly sure but i think 4 of those from the penalty spot.Id doubt he'll be taking our pens, thats Stevies job!

Anyway seems Rafa will be selling a midfielder you'd think.I cant see Gerrard,Masch or Alonso being happy on the bench long term. Also were does it leave Lucas?
Gonna be an interesting summer me thinks! :nod

At least when Rafa changes things around he will have a left sided player to play there rather than having to play Kuyt or Gerrard on the left. Knowing Rafa he will probably play him right back :D

from the BBC.. O'Neils quotes:

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has revealed Liverpool have made an offer for England midfielder Gareth Barry.

But O'Neill angrily denied Liverpool had offered to pay £10m for the player.

He told the club's website: "Liverpool haven't made a straight cash offer. They've made an offer involving a mish-mash of nameless player exchanges.

"I'm particularly disappointed to hear that business is being conducted in public. We're trying to build a side here and we're not a feeder club."

O'Neill pulled off a masterstroke in persuading Barry to sign a new four-year deal when he took charge of Villa in the summer of 2006.

And the Villa Park boss said on Friday: "From my experience of working with him, Gareth is not someone who would be wanting to break contracts lightly.

"A couple of weeks ago Gareth said he would prefer to wait until the end of the season before we start discussing things and I think that would be the right thing to do."

-----

By "mish-mash of nameless player exchanges" - i presume that offer is £xmil plus an internationally capped player (ie carson or crouch, without stating a name|)... or something like that
