Finnan has been one of our most consistent defenders since Rafa took over. Just coz he struggled with injury last term he has been written off, which is harsh. The new Swiss full back bought last week must be pretty good if we are prepared to off load Finnan so easily.

Hyypia, Carragher and Finnan are our only 1st team players aged 30+. Voronin, Gerrard, Kuyt, Aurelio and Benayoun will all be over 28 come 1st August. The current average of 24 1st team squad players. including the three latest signings and the departure of Kewell, Riise and Crouch. is 26. Having signed Babel (21), Torres (24), Skrtel (23), Mascherano (24) and Lucas (21) last season, the signings this season look to be in the 25-27 age bracket. Is this a change in emphasis of signings? Perhaps Rafa fears this will be his last chance to make a title challenge, if he doesn't then adios

Come on the gooners. It's a lot for a player that old and with little prospect of getting most of that back if he flops. If we sold him in three years time we'd be lucky to get 1/3 of that fee, a few manc fans on another board I go on were not so keen on Berbatov for £20m given his age when they could get a younger player for about the same.

But then "proven in the Premiership" always gets a mention, what doesn't come with that "guarantee" is the guarantee the player will fit in at the new club

I think you're right mate , just posted it thought it'd be an interesting point , than again i doubt arsenal would go for him as he would their record signing for 18 million?

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has revealed the transfer of Gareth Barry to Liverpool remains uncertain.

Liverpool have seen a number of offers turned down for the Villa captain, who O'Neill values at £18million.

O'Neill insists that no deal has been reached between the clubs but is confident that the saga will be resolved soon.

"We're entering a new season at the moment and the future is still uncertain," O'Neill told Sky Sports News.

"Nothing much has changed, but I'm sure like most situations in football it will resolve itself at some stage.

"We don't want to lose players, we're not really in a position to do so but we have the ambition and the determination to drive forward this season and get the squad that we feel the club deserves."

The Villa boss is also keen to strengthen his squad to improve on their sixth place league finish last season.

Steve Sidwell is Villa's latest signing with a deal agreed for goalkeeper Brad Guzan, but O'Neill reveals he is hoping to bring in more players to Villa Park.

"We are in the market for players, we do want to try and improve the squad," added O'Neill.

"We did very well last season, touch wood, with injuries but I wouldn't want to rely on all of those things for another season.

"And if we do pick up injuries and suspensions I like to think we can cope with it. Last year we may have felt that difficult."

I heard that villa have issued a statement saying Liverpool haven't done anything since their initial bid, that doesn't sound too credible because I've heard of several "offers".

As for Carson, last I heard one of the promoted sides (Stoke I think) have been linked with a £4m move for him I believe, so £1m more than Diego cost us and Carson's younger

Well if O'neil does not cough up 4 million for Carson after he raved about him last year he is a bitter w@nker

As I understand it, Benitez wanted 10 million from Villa for Carson as that was the agreement prior to the loan deal between the clubs. Since O'Neill decided against that (wisely imo), I reckon Benitez would accept a bid of about half that from another club, but I don't think he'd accept a lesser bid from Villa as they have backed out of the previous agreement.

My view is that the Barry situation will be resolved at £15M plus Finnan unless:

1. Arsenal buy him
2. He hands in a transfer request, and in doing so, agrees to waive his pay-off, thus getting the deal done (I feel he should do this anyway, as any player who wants to move on should not be entitled to a loyalty payment from the club they want to leave).

I quite like MON. He's a bit mad at times, but he's a serious, intelligent football man who only wants the best for his club. He should rightly be fighting his corner to keep hold of his captain and one of his better players. I think the player will move on though, but to my eyes MON is playing this as he should.

£15M plus Finnan and the deal will be done. Villa can say they got their £18M, valuing Finnan at £3M; while we can say we got our man, all the while knowing that while Finnan has been a good servant, he is now behind Arbeloa and Degen in the pecking order.
