Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We are going to miss Johnson, who else offers that kind of threat in the team out wide.  He's our best wide man by a mile.

I was impressed with Kelly the last time he played, he's got to get the nod.  Even Degen poses a threat going forward but he's not very good at defending.

Wish we had a good RW/RM, we need a better option than Kuyt.

its a bummer about johnson, but apparently kelly is only a week or so off fitness. stick darby or someone in for the reading game and hopefully kelly will be ok for the next premiership game. no fecking about with putting carra there, or skrtel, and lets not try to rely on deggen too much.

I'm thinking Rafa will play Degen or Carra at RB (50-50), I'd rather it were Degen.

Must be just me but I think Degen has done 'ok' when he has played for us.
I mean it must be hard getting 1 game every 2 months.

Degen isnt half bad from what i've seen of him.. Seems pretty good going forward but defensively he's nowhere near good enough... Anyways would rather have him playing RB than have Carra or Skrtel down there...

About Johnson, well he's a good player, and one of the best we have in all honesty, but overall i'd say he hasnt done enough so far this season to warrant the price tag .. Hopefully his form improves when he comes back from injury...

If it is a tear in the medial ligament, Johnson is likely to be out for more than 4 weeks, 6 weeks minimum, 12 weeks maximum.

I missed the game against Lyon but apparently Martin Kelly shone at right back so it’s a shame he’s not fit for the FA Cup game. But it sounds like he should be back in contention within the next 2 weeks.

Degen hasn’t done too badly on the rare occasion he has played and he actually had a decent game against Arsenal in the League cup. But I haven’t seen him in the squad for a while but there is no news of a new injury so I have no idea what is going on there.

Darby is out of his depth at this level and should only play in an absolute emergency.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson insists the players have the desire to succeed after their attitude was questioned by both their manager and former players.

The 1-0 defeat at Wigan on Monday featured one of the worst 45-minute performances seen by a Liverpool team in recent years and left manager Rafael Benitez fuming.

He questioned the mentality of his players and that was an issue also raised by former Reds midfielder Jimmy Case.

However, Johnson - who as a second-half substitute avoided the worst of it all - stressed the squad were still up for the fight and intended to prove it against Lille in their Europa League last-16 first leg tie on Thursday.

"Obviously it (Wigan) was a disappointing performance but we have put it behind us and are looking forward to the game tomorrow," said the England international, who made his first appearance since late December at the DW Stadium after a knee injury.

"It is difficult to explain. Those things can happen and all the lads who were there were disappointed more than anyone else.

"But everyone has a bad day at the office sometimes. Usually it is one or two players and the rest of the lads will pull them through but when there is more than that it is difficult.

"Wigan set out to make it difficult for us and at the end of the day we weren't up to it.

"But the desire is there. We still have things to fight for and I'm with the lads every day so I know for sure they have a desire to win."

I hope he starts against Lille, he's a player who can rip through a wing all on his own when on his game and even moreso against lesser opposition.  Still, at times it looks like Rafa has pulled the reigns back on him a bit.  Hopefully he can prove his worth Thursday.

Unfortunately it seems a lot of people are all having "bad days at the office" a lot and all at the same time!

He has played awful tonight. A disaster waiting to happen at left back. No confidence and terrible positioning caused their goal

I feel a bit sorry for Glen :(

He was shoved into left back against some players that are very good going forward. He tried hard
