Europa league - Here we come

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Its not laughable to have some belief in the team you support and believe they can go on and win a trophy this season .

I dont think i have seen anyone saying its easy - the fans are just showing a bit of positiveness by saying we have to grab this chance to win a trophy - a much needed trophy for us to celebrate .

And if you couldnt give a f.uck about poxy cups (where they poxy when we won them previously ?!?!) does that mean if we get to the final and if we win you wont be applauding the lads and cheering them on and celebrating ?!?

I agree that we will be seen as one of the most dangerous unseeded teams to be drawn against and a continued run in Europe would be a relief to see - but it all has to go back to the most important point that we need to finish in the top four.

finishing 4th has more priority than winning the europa cup.

and given our current form teams would want to play us right now, there are still some good teams in this cup and for those that think winning this is a formality your mad.

Rafa has come out and more or less "guaranteed" we will finish top four. This may indicate he is going to put out a second string, or face the possibility we mirror our 04/05 season where we also started with 24 points from 16 games and missed out on 4th because we were on a CL run

Mate, I would think even a LFC second string would have a better chance of progressing in the Europa League than the first team managed in the Champions League. I don't think they could conceivably be any worse....

our 2nd string can't beat anybody other than other reserve teams.

When I was young (late 60's) Liverpool and Liverpool reserves used to play a match every season, and the reserves always won!  The only time I can remember the first team winning was in the early 70's when Keegan first came.

are we in the draw for this on friday?
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Some tricky teams in the pot for this but out of the dangerous teams we have beaten some if not most of them before. The atmosphere on European nights at Anfield gives us a greater home advantage than almost anyone.
Our form of late sucks as we all know but we have a little time to the start of the competition and a good run of results and a little tinkering in the January window could give us shape and form going in to the competition and a good start in the Europa league could give us the mental lift to push through and make this a memorable season.
We are feeling down now and rightly so but with a couple of fresh faces, a top 4 finish and a good result in FA and Europa Cups could see us taking one or two pieces of silverware this season and that is by no means an unsuccessful season even if our hopes were bhoyed by last seasons position.

I worry that some of our fans are clinging to hopes of winning in a competition we should be embarrassed to be in. It would be like Lids winning the LDV Vans Trophy or whatever it is currently called which excludes big teams.

I couldn't care less if our reserves win or lose, if they play in the Europey League and get playing time in a competitive match that we don't care about losing then it may help when they are called upon to play 1st team. Maybe Degen or Darby could prove viable options as RB instead of playing Carra out of position when Johnson is out. Maybe Voronin could find his right boot and stop playing with two left boots. Maybe Babel could prove his worth, maybe Riera could find some form, maybe Skrtel could learn to defend, maybe Pacheco could move a step closer to 1st team action................................

But we could always play our best side, not win it anyway and risk losing Torres, Gerrard, Aquilani, Benayoun (assuming he ever starts), Johnson, Agger or even Reina and Kuyt to injury and then there would be as much anger about it as there is when players get injured on international duty.

We have our work cut out finishing top four, in fact we should really be aiming for a good run and push for third. It won't be easy, dividing our attention across two (or three with the FA Cup looming) could be as fatal as the decision to divide forces at Isandlwana (Zulu war)

Did you think it was like the LDV when we won it in 2001 or when we have won it previously - do you get the same quality of teams in the LDV as you do in the Europa lge - are we not in the business of winning trophies ? is this not a trophy and a prestigeous one at that

Here are our potential opponents (three of which are yet to be decided but will be so tonight):

Unirea Urziceni (Romania)
Juventus (Italy)
Wolfsburg (Germany)
Marseille (France)
Galatasaray (Turkey)
Fenerbache (Turkey)
Red Bull Salzburg (Austria)
Shaktar Donetsk (Ukraine, defending champions)
Werder Bremen (Germany)
Benfica (Portugal)
Sporting Lissabon (Portugal)
Roma (Italy)
PSV Eindhoven (Holland)
Hamburg SV (Germany)/Tel Aviv (Israel) -> Hamburg win the group if they draw Tel Aviv (away) tonight
Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)/Anderlecht (Belgium) -> These play At Ajax's who only need a draw to be no1
Valencia (Spain)/Lille (France)/Genoa (Italy) -> Valencia are two points ahead of Lille and Genoa and play the latter away tonight, whilst Lille play at home against czech side Slavia Prague (who have nothing left to play for)

So who does everyone fancy then? An "easy" draw or something a bit more "spectacular"? Personally I'd primarily just like to avoid having to go to - say Donetsk - or some other place too far away because of the travelling.
