Sack Him - All Venting In Here Please

it looks like many have forgotten that twit and tw@t's first choice of replacement for the manager is jurgen klinnsman, so we have to be careful what we wish for. in that context, benitez leaving mid-season would be disasterous, even in the context of this already awful season.

I am also very much in the camp of "be careful what you wish for"  What gives people confidence that the manager that replaces Rafa will be so brilliant?  Not even to get into whether or not there are managers out there capable, but who the American's could actually attract to accept the position.

How attractive is the position of manager of LFC at this moment? You inherit a weak squad with tons of players that are "not good enough," almost all your players that are any good have serious fitness issues. Incredible pressure from the fans to win the league title, which becomes harder and harder each year as clubs like Man City spend and spend and get used to being a bigger club, turmoil in dressing room, financial debts, etc.

Lots of talk about some of the better managers in the prem (typical), what the heck do any of those managers know about winning league titles at the top flight?

If we look to any foreign managers with success, none of them know anything about the English league.

I think Capello is actually an interesting name because he has won the title in big time leagues at big time clubs with lot of pressure, and is somewhat familiar with the English game (although he hasn't managed against other English teams)

Can't see us being able to land Mourinho

This is still the same manager and largely the same team that finished 2nd last season, lets give him the whole season to set the ship straight.

Aquilani hasn't even made his league debut yet.  Even if he had, we would probably be saying that he gets a bit of a pass this year to adjust to English football.  At the time we signed him, we thought he would be fit much earlier, and Rafa would have been going the club a MASSIVE disservice if he sacrificed buying a less talented player just so he could have someone that was fit for the first couple of months of a 5 year contract.  To point that it was Rafa's fault that Alonso left, ok if that is conceded, he also thought he would be able to replace him with Barry, which didn't happen.

Without any obvious upgrade out there, I'd rather stick with consistency.

I agree Joe there would be little to be gained by sacking the manager this week.

Although when you mention "a weak squad with tons of players that are "not good enough," almost all your players that are any good have serious fitness issues. " It does start to become a more attractive proposition. Afterall who is to blame for our weak squad and the tons of players who aren't good enough?

I would say if the worst came to pass and Rafa walked or was sacked the obvious candidate in the short term would be Dalglish. A manager that has won the league both with a team he inherited, and with a team that he largely built. He also knows all about winning titles in the top flight as he went on to do it again with Blackburn.

If we look to any foreign managers with success, none of them know anything about the English league.

Again Mourinho would have a good case to argue about that statement. Obviously it would be a case of if he wanted to come, but he has indicated before how he would love to manage us ......so maybe he might surprise everyone and accept ?

As I posted earlier in this thread Dalglish, Mourinho and Hiddink would be the three on my shortlist. Two of whom have won the title more than once and in their first season to boot.

Dalglish has been out of the game for a while. I am sure a lot of stuff never leaves you, but I am not sure how interested he was in the last 5-6 years in following the careers of potential bargain buys across world football. Who knows if he has the energy for the job.  4 years ago my local american football team rehired its legendary coach from the 80s that won 3 league titles (and was already in the Hall of Fame) but had been out of the game for 13 years.  There were early growing pains, then some mild success (but we were heavily backed financially), then he left with a year still left on his contract because he was too worn out, and now our team is in disarray just 20 some months after he left, and all the fans want to get rid of the owner and current coach.

Seems like Mourinho likes to be the front runner , and the only way I could see him coming would be if we had a more stable situation in the directors box

Hiddink seems a good option but its hard to tell what his priorities are. is he interested in taking on a multi year contract at club level? he is 62, how much longer does he intend on coaching?

I would presume that if Dalglish took over he would have scouts looking for young players, so the real question is would he have enough interest, enthusiasm, desire and energy to take up the reins again. I think thats a question only he can answer, but I think we could do worse than ask the question.

Again with Mourinho/Hiddink, if you don't ask you don't know. According to Purslow we are going to get investment within the next six months so maybe we will have a more stable situation in the not too distant future.

Who would have thought Rafa would have left Valencia to come to a struggling Liverpool ..... no money, best players wanting to leave, while he had no experience of the Premiership or of building a team.

The most worrying part of changing manager for me is who will be choosing him.

Rafa Benitez: Liverpool don't have to win trophies to be a success - MirrorFootball.co.uk

Rafa Benitez has claimed success at Liverpool should not be measured in trophies.

The Merseysiders pride themselves as being the most successful club in England, with 18 titles and five European Cups.

But Benitez, who takes Liverpool into a week that could decide their Champions League fate after Saturday's shock 3-1 defeat at Fulham, said: “I don’t agree when people say that you have to win trophies.“I always say you have to be there, you have to be close, you have to create a group of players who can fight for trophies.

“We got 86 points last season, yet some people were saying that it wasn’t good because we finished second.

“I think reducing the gap between the top team and Liverpool to four points was a massive achievement.

“Trophies mean a lot to everyone. But the most important thing is to see progression and evidence that you are improving and able to fight for trophies.“It’s not just about one year. It is about what we can achieve in the future.

“People say that I have now been here five years. I say, look at the differences here now.

“Look at the value of the club before compared to the value of the club now.

“Look at the value of the squad before compared to the value of the squad now. You can see the progression.”

Benitez’s words will come as a surprise to followers of a club with an insatiable appetite for silverware.

As legendary Anfield boss Bob Paisley once famously said: “First is first and second is nowhere.”

Spaniard Benitez won the Champions League in his first season at Anfield, but the Reds have not lifted a trophy since the FA Cup in 2006.

He was given assurances about his future last week by managing director Christian Purslow.

Hours later Liverpool resurrected their Premier League challenge by beating Manchester United 2-0.

But they travel to Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday night with their hopes of progression hanging by a thread following the French club’s 2-1 win at Anfield and a defeat at Fiorentina.

Benitez believes he will still have the backing of Purslow and the club’s two American owners, even if Liverpool suffer an early exit from Europe’s premier competition.

But he is aware that such a scenario would have serious consequences when it comes to his New Year transfer budget.

Benitez said: “Christian Purslow made it very clear that when I signed a new contract for five years it was so that I would be at this club for a very long time.

“Now I can control the Academy, I can control the young players we produce and build something very good for the future.

“We have analysed the squad together, looking at plans for January and also next season.

“My belief is that we will qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, but of course, you have to have plans based on whether you have more money or less money available.

“The more money you have, the easier it is.

“If you have less money then you have to manage in a different way and find other solutions to improve.”

right now i would take you over him, i know you would not take our best players off when we need a goal.

right now the press seem to think its Hull that with sack their manager, most still seem to think Rafa had 5 games to turn it around, so far he is 1-1 in that but if he is 2-1 down after the CL games then they seem to think he is a gonner.

We can't afford to sack him right now..... would cost us far too much money.

Definitely would not be in the club's best interest.

As a manager, I've never hid my long held belief that he's not the right man for the job and was absolutely flabbergasted when we extended his contract and gave him more control over transfer matters.... but we made our bed and in the current financial climate, we have no choice but to sleep in it..... flea infested or not.

It's all moot anyway..... I do not belief that twit and tw@t would get rid as they're only interested in the bottom line. The only way we'll see the back of Rafa at this moment in time is if he decides to walk or a football savvy sugardaddy buys the club...... and let's face it, that's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.

We just have to get behind the man and hope that he stops all this "fuckwittery" with "selectorial silliness" and ludicrous substitutions. I'm not holding my breath though..... Leopard can't change it's spots and all that.

Burns me up to see us like this.

How much do you reckon Lakes? 5mil? Less?

Wasnt there some bs article some time back about the owners reluctant to sack him as they couldn't afford the 20mil or something.

I'll have to take your word for it, mate. Obviously I'm not privvy to the going-ons at the club and contracts.

I'd be very surprised though.

Its simply not the right time to do any sacking and people need to get their heads around that simple idea and stop all the bleating (some of which is very childlike I must say). We all know the problems: owners, finance, dodgy squad, tactics, injuries etc. etc. ETC. But sacking Rafa now, who is neither as bad or as good as people make out would be catastrophic for the club. I've made my opinions clear about 'our' manager in the past, at to be fair, it aint good. But at this point in time the 'right' thing for the good of the club is to BACK Rafa and see if he can turn it around, he is more than capable.

I don't think he is capable at all, and he totally misunderstands what the fans his employers really want ( the league) he took off torres thinking about Lyon! he should have been thinking about fulham, I couldn't care less about the CL, I want the league back and he isn't capable, get back the last man that did.
Kenny would galvanise the fans and the players and bring us all together again in a flash.
