"the two clubs reportedly agreed a ’significant’ six-figure fee."
I doubt it's THAT significant, not perhaps as significant as having a homegrown player we could name in our squad. Maybe better to have one or two kids in the squad, if not playing, rather than spending millions on English players who will gradually fade from the starting XI picture and move on

now but they weren't 15-25 years back when they seemed to have a conveyor belt of great players coming out of their academy. The fact is our academy is producing sh1t players and there is no excuse for that, surely if you can get hold of kids at 8-9 then you should be able to hone a handful of them into top class players, or reject them early, before they reach 18. I just can't see why this is so hard. Maybe the problem is that we have too many kids at the academy instead of focussing the attention on the kids who really do have the abilities. I think it is fair to say that Arsenal and Manure are far better at producing players from their academies, whereas we are simply not good enough. If Rafa has no faith in the academy then we might as well shut it down as it must be a drain of money at the moment, that money could be diverted towards buying players from other clubs who have functioning academies.
