, we know Johnson is going to be at least quite good for us, and that he is better than Arbeloa who we might get 8 mill for. So if he isn't worth 17, he is worth somewhere between 8 and 17, and if he's our right back for five seasons he'll look cheap at half the price IMHO, although I'll concede he may still look a bit pricey at full whack.

As such, the opposition left midfielder and left back are hardly going to be in any mood to attack him anyway. They are going to be so exasperated with Dirk running around a lot, and so exausted from retrieving his first touches, that the idea of actually attacking is going to be the last thing on their minds.

I may stand corrected, but all 3 were more expensive than Johnson?
I think the only way a fee can be judged as "too expensive" is in retrospect, after his value to the team is evaluated.
After all, 30m for a CB sounds ridiculous, or 18m for carrick, until you see what they've won and then suddenly it doesn't matter at all

Bosingwa AND Ramos were both cheaper than Johnson... 16mill i think for both...
And if you're expecting Johnson to suddenly become the best rightback in the world when he puts on our jersey with impeccable defensive abilities and world class ability down the right flank when going forward, i quite simply dont...
He'll be an improvement, yes... and he'll be better than Arbeloa going forward, yes.... but then again so would many other have done... For the money we spent i'd expect him to have a significant impact on our play and not just be solid or okayish when going forward... if he does, only then would he be money well spent imo..
cares how much Ramos was mate seriously can you not just give the lad a chance instead of taking any and very opportunity to jump down his neck.
