GLEN JOHNSON - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It doesn't make ANY SENSE AT ALL for Rafa to have to "defend" the price he paid for Johnson when ANOTHER CLUB EQUALLED THE ASKING PRICE. Clearly, this is what the market dictated.

Lots of rumors about Maicon to Chelsea, and I can't help but think that he would have been the better target. I think that is the thing that you can question about this deal.

If we sell Arbeloa we´ll be in the same situation of last year. Who will paly in that position if Johnson gets injured? Carragher again? Darby? He´s not good enough.

Arbeloa must stay.

With Mourinho in charge there he would have made it difficult for us for sure.

I would think he would want to make it more difficult for Chelsea if anybody.

I think he will go for a smaller shirt mate :D

As for a replacement right back , we should look at bringing in one on loan to cover incase johnson gets injured , maybe eboue ?

I think he would cost around 12Mil mate. Ideally we would have kept Arby. Do we even have enough money to buy a new RB even as backup? FEcking Degen is always injured.

I'd like us to keep Arby as a backup for Glenn. No need to spend even a single penny on a well covered position now.

Apparently he will be earning 200 thousand $ a week.  That's a lot of money to pay a defender.

Liverpool sign Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson for $200K a week

June 23, 2009

Liverpool have snared Portsmouth and England defender Glen Johnson making the right-back one of the highest-paid defenders in the Barclays Premier League.

Johnson, 24, will earn a huge $200,000-a-week, after signing a deal worth $43 million over four years to move to Anfield.

The wage packet rocketed after Manchester City made a late dash to snatch the defender from under Liverpool's nose.

After Johnson had signalled he was happy to move to Merseyside last week, City boss Mark Hughes tried to hijack the deal which forced Rafael Benitez to significantly increase the personal terms.

Portsmouth will collect $38 million from the sale. Several other clubs including Chelsea had also been in the hunt for the fast-emerging England international, but Liverpool's determination and cash proved decisive.

The move will raise several eyebrows around the Premier League, after recent revelations that Liverpool were in dire financial trouble, but their predicament has been eased by news this week that owner George Gillett had raised capital by selling Canadian ice hockey outfit Montreal Canadiens.

this deal could easily become one of the worst in football transfer history if Johnson fails to perform for us next season.... hope he has the mental strength to deal with all the pressure and expectations...
And to think, some here thought Owen on a bosman would be 'too big a gamble'
