now then Gybsy lad  :D

I dont think he has used much of his budget at all.  I can see one other big signing to be announced.

If we had £100m or more to spend on players I doubt Johnson's price would be an issue. What worries most of us, I think I'm reasonably safe in saying it is a sticking point for most anyway, is that £18m or whatever is a big chunk out of what may be a transfer budget of £40m-£50m.

If I didn't think the money could be better spent I wouldn't care what the price was, not sure that we have the luxury of wasting money when still catching up.

chaps - you seriously don't think Rafa is coughing up 18mil?  Give him some credit.  Someone is clearly on the way out to help towards the funds.

Plus the money from the Crouch deal......

"plus the money from the Crouch deal" ? What is it with people, they think writing off the money (£5.5m) isn't the same as giving Pompey £5.5m and therefore part of the fee?!?!?!?

So if I owe s@int £7.50 and give him a tenner and say "keep the change", because I only owed him £7.50 that means I only gave him £7.50 even though I actually gave him £10!?!? £12.5m plus the £5.5m owed to Crouch "written off" would still effectively be paying £18m for Johnson

4th!!!!! what behind Lucas? Please stop GYBS you're killing me here.  :D  :D

4th behind masher gerrard and xabi you clown

Ah ok, I don't really consider Stevie a midfielder any more though, more of a deep second striker but fair enough but as said before I think it would depend on the game, sometime you just can't play 2 DM's as we found out last season!

If Alonso did go and they put SG back in the middle with Masch and brought in Villa to play with Torres.

Arbeloa is not as good going forward, not as good at crossing, not as fast, around the same defending

Id rather sell Mascherano to fund Villa but i'd be okay with that to be honest... Failing that we can always go for Baines for another 18mill... hes an England international ya know !  :lookaround

How is it a "different matter". We haven't just said, "that £5.5m you owe us for Crouch - forget it". And then totally unrelated offered £12.5m for Johnson and they accepted, the two are interdependent ie we don't write off the £5.5m debt then we don't get Johnson for £12.5m.

PLEASE none of you ever go into accountancy or anything involving other people's money. Not even sure I'd trust some of you serving me at the till for my weekly shopping even though the scanner does all the hard work!

ha ha smart :censored:!!!

Nothing to do with him being in the England squad.  I just think it improves an area where we have struggled for some time
