Srna, Lahm, Rafinha, Anyukov, Miguel are all better player who would come for cheaper... Hell i'd take Corluka and Belleti for cheap rather than paying over the odds for Johnson.... Maicon could be on his way to Chelsea... maybe we should wait and use that sort of money to bring in Bosingwa who is a much better player at both ends imo... FFS for 20mill we might aswell go for Maicon himself, or Zambrotta or Ramos or Sagna who are all way better than Johnson will ever be...

Point being, he's not good enough to command such a fee... for such money, given his position, he'd have to be one of the best in the world... Glen johnson while being a good player is nowhere near...

some good points you make their. the main one being johnson is not worth a penny more than £7 mill -no way! TBH i wouldn't even pay that for him. like you say i'd rather see arbeloa stay & use the limited money we will have on another player.

trouble is if honest we do need to have better competition for both FB posistions, so by selling dossena gives us funds,& not just swallowed up by debts then the money allowed would be interesting in who raffa wants. but GJ is well ovepriced IMHO & for that reason alone forget him.

Johnson is a good solid right back. Nothing more and nothing less. He is better than Arby but only by a fraction.

If we are going to replace a more than adequte right back in what we already have it has to be class. Phillip Lahm is such a player.

I feel we need strengthening elsewhere first.

In actual fact, he's always looked to me like a right midfielder who's playing right back in all honesty so he may come in very useful. I've advocated his signing for a long time now, and I think we should properly go get him. I reckon that at 25 years of age, he is cheap at 12 million quid and I think we'll have to go higher to secure his signature. If I was in charge of the purse strings I'd go no higher than 17 mill for him, but upto that figure I'd look to see off any rivals.

17 million quid seemed like a lot of money only three weeks ago (still does for many people) but it's probably not as ridiculous as some felt at the time.

I'm sticking with my original thoughts that he is a good player, a very good one going forward and I'd be very happy if we signed him.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Portsmouth right back Glen Johnson. The England international is reportedly seen by manager Rafa Benitez as his number one choice this summer.

Man City and Chelsea are also interested in the 24 year old England international, who started his career at West Ham before a £6m move to Chelsea after just 15 appearances for the Hammers. Since moving to Fratton Park in 2007 he has developed into one of the country’s best full-backs and established himself as England’s first choice right back.

On Saturday, Portsmouth executive Chairman Peter Storrie confirmed the club have received an offer in the region of £15m-£20m, believed to be from Liverpool or Chelsea, according to The Telegraph. Storrie admits he and Portsmouth would not stand in Johnson’s way if one of the big four came in for him, saying “It is very hard to try and hold people back when they have a chance to play in the Champions League. I accept that.”

While the Daily Mail report “Rafa Benitez will step up his efforts to finance a deal for Glen Johnson over the weekend and hopes to unveil the England right back as his first summer signing in the next few days.”

They report the financial side being the main stumbling block for Benitez but that around £7m outstanding from the sale of Peter Crouch last summer may be used to top up the fee and bring it to around £17m.

to early to see a clear picture here   all will be revealed shortly...   ???

Just been reading we are interested in Micah Richards for £5million. Johnson for £20million or Richards for £5million....... no contest as far as I am concerned.

MICAH RICHARDS IN KOP FRAME

Liverpool preparing £5m move for defender

KOP THAT - Micah Richards

By MARTIN HARDY, 13/06/2009

CASH-STRAPPED Liverpool are preparing a £5million move for England Under-21 defender Micah Richards.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is ready to offload the 20-year-old defender, who burst on to the international stage two years ago.

Hughes wants Portsmouth's Glen Johnson and that would push Richards out of the first-team picture at Eastlands next season. Anfield boss Rafa Benitez, aware of the financial constraints he will have to work under this summer, believes he could pick up a bargain.

Richards has already been capped 11 times and Benitez wants a powerful and versatile defender to strengthen his squad for next season's Premier League title assault.

The right-back's star has fallen since England coach Fabio Capello took over the full national side but Benitez believes he can revive Richards' international career and the player would welcome the move.

Long-term fan Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could also be tempted to make an approach for the England full-back.

glen johnson for 15-20 million FFS. And someone else was saying they can't imagine mascherarno and alonso being worth 35/30million...if glen johnson is worth 17 mllion mascherano and alonso might as well be worth 30/35... what is it with those freakin overated english players...

now if we're so cash strapped, surely it is time to relook into bringing back Michael Owen as back up to Fernando...

I just hope it doesn't prove to be the same kind of decision that the Kewell vs Duff decision turned out to be. We got Kewell for £5m, Chelsea got Duff for £17m was it, and you wonder who got the best bargain.

Richards is a decent defender, but I must again voice concerns that Rafa is shopping in the Premiership when our best players weren't bought in that market

Torres - Spain
Alonso - Spain
Reina - Spain
Kuyt - Holland
Gerrard - Youth
Carragher - Youth

As for the rest of our best XI, well Aurelio (Spain), Agger/Skrtel (Denmark/Russia), Arbeloa (Spain), Mascherano (England*) and Riera (Spain) - although you might argue Benayoun (England) might make the XI on his form at the end of the season

*technically Mascherano wasn't signed from West Ham, they never owned him he was only on loan there, but he was playing in England when we signed him.

Doesn't overwhelmingly point towards signing from England, although we have had a few poor signings from overseas as well - the likes of Dossena, Degen and Babel vs Keane, Pennant and Bellamy to name a few signed in the last 2-3 seasons.

Personally I would use the Spanish base in our side - Reina, Riera, Arbeloa, Alonso and Torres - to help influence some good Spanish players. Maybe Rafa is getting a bit out of touch with the Spanish leagues now he's been here five years, but he must still have contacts and scouts out there.
Don't panic Mr Mainwaring! My Owzat account is locked by a seeming flaw in the board system. I changed my e-mail address, but that left me needing to be re-activated and therefore powerless to even post or notify a mod.

the problem is form and one-off seasons.

2/3 years ago Micah Richards was the most promising english defender, and at one point his value was about 4 times what it is now.

on the back of a good season, Glen Johnson's value 2 seasons ago was about 4 times less what it is now!!

its like the whole lennon, bentley senario. Lennon had a really good season, "englands solution to the right wing post beckham" - then faded, then Bently had a great season, and his market value went up to £17m.... he aint worth that now! - and Lennon is currently seen as the better of the two players.

I think we've got to be very careful about both. Value for money wise, its easy to see why richards is a more attractive signing at £5m... but i do like johnson, who if we did get, we'd have to hope he remails permantly in this fine form, and gets even better as he learns, not just fades away, and we end up cursing our judgement

if micah richards regains the form he showed when he was breaking into the england team then at £5m that would be a bargain.

would also provide great cover for our centre backs too.

I would rather have MIcah RIchards than Glen Johnson specially i there was an 8/1 million difference in price. Micah Richards needs to get his head down and work hard and concentrate on his game rather than being the lad about town and I think at Liverpool he would do that and in trn be better than Johnson. I wanted to sign him 2 years ago but was valud at 15/18million, I think he would be a great assest to the side and could, with some coachin from Carra be at least half decent cover at CB, GJ culd never be that... Sign him up now Rafa..

Don't forget peeps, Richards may not have had a great season or be England's #1 right-back or centre-back, but he is only just approaching his 21st birthday

Micah Richards : DOB 24/06/88
Glen Johnson : DOB 23/08/84

Johnson is nearly four years older and definitely not worth £20m. How many players make their England debuts before their 21st birthday? I just googled it and an article reckons he was SEVENTH youngest ever to play for England.

ENGLAND'S YOUNGEST DEBUTS.

1. T.Walcott @ 17 years, 75 days
2. W.Rooney @ 17 years, 111 days
3. J.Prinsep @ 17 years, 252 days
4. T.Rostron @ 18 years, 23 days
5. C.Mitchell @ 18 years, 23 days
6. M.Owen @ 18 years, 60 days
7. M.RICHARDS @ 18 years, 144 days

http://www.englandfootballonline.com/TeamHist/TrivPlyrsYoung.html

R.Ferdinand is 14th, A.Lennon 17th and G.JOHNSON only 19th @ 19 years, 85 days.

Richards is supposedly a CB so we'd have someone who could kill two liverbirds with one stone, cover for CB and maybe 1st choice RB. For £5m and at only 21 that's a bargain in my book. Might be the right time to buy while his price is at a low ebb and Citeh are just collecting mediocre players to replace their existing stock. By the time they realise Richards is a player for the future it might be too late. I think the average age of their last five buys at silly prices (£80m+ ?) was 29. If they don't work out their prices are likely to plummet, if they can even get rid of them on high wages!
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
