Fantastic win at madrid. - Could it kickstart our league challenge?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Brilliant performance from the team at the Bernabau. Sabre is right, I don't think an English team in the history of the game has beaten both Barcelona and Real Madrid away in three seasons. It's a fantastic achievement, and whatever anyone thinks of the manager and his methodology, he deserves a mountain of credit for it.

The team looked really good to me toinight. we defended better than we have for ages, with Aurelio in particular being absolutely brilliant against Ramos and Robben IMHO. He was well supported by Riera too, and it was nice to see the leftie playing practically the whole match. Hopefully his injury from the assault at the end isn't serious. I also thought the two central defenders were excellent too, and Arby was very tidy at right back.

Sometimes when Alonso and Masherano play together, we can lack creativity. It's hard to really know if this was the case tonight as we were happy to contain Madrid, but I think with Gerrard off Torres if we can nudge Xabi forward and make him stay there it should be OK.

Kuyt has seemingly gone through the tunnel and come out the other side, and I think a move back to the right will be good for him. Benayoun continues in the form of his life (well certainly his Liverpool life anyway) and as either first change or first rotation, he can do a good job as he did again tonight.

Can in though be the case that the win can lift us? I think it can. Man Utd although being strong favourites to go through against Inter, will be losing a wink or two of sleep, and I can't help thinking if we can just beat them Old Trafford we might just be avble to put the doubts up even more. Even if we can't catch them in the league, it'd be nice to contribute towards them not winning the Champions League again.

Ouyr next two games, Middlesboro away and Sunderland at Home. Strongest team possible, no Lucas's, Dossena's, Babels or Lee Peltiers. Two wins and lets put the wind up the Mancs at least.

unfortunatley mick some of the dossenas and lucas and babels will play a part and one of them needs to as reira is suspended for the home leg in the match . dossena will play inseat of aurelio in at least one of those matches or maybe lucas - babel will play instead of kuyt or yossi and lucas will replace either masher or xabi in one of those games . the players will need to be fresh for the home leg .

Hopefully, we have a big game the weekend away to Boro (who won tonight) and it dosent look good for Torres for the weekend. Some of the team as you mentioned are starting to show bit of form and we should be okay to win these 2 games and a bit of pressure on United

Feck the home leg. They aren't going to come to Anfield and turn over a 1-0 deficit, they ain't good enough mate by a distance. Play the strongest team in the nest two league games, we've just had three games in a month or something fecking ridiculous. In a couple of months, they'll all be down the Pink Pussycat on Winston Churchill boulevard, Barbados., getting tanked up on Black Russians so feck the rest. We need to put ourselves back in the title race, if we aint careful we'll once again be the freshest team in the league with feck all to play for. Lets go for it for once.

Yep I agree,It's funny how quick things can change in football,I know we are 7 points behind Man Utd but surely they will hit some kind of rocky patch sooner or later we just need to make sure we are there abouts.

In Europe I am never worried we are a total different team,Well organised,Well drilled and we always seem to come up with the goods,It just pisses me right off that yet again were getting these romours flying about about the manager probally the blue sh i t e that have started it today

Good post Mick
We need to use this excellent win as a springboard and just put a little bit of worry into the mind of the mancs before March 14th.

Y'know we have some moaners on this forum........ but look at the mightiest teams of euope who we have beaten since 2005... Barca. Meelan, Juve, Roma, Chelsea twice, PSV, Leverkusan - all the greats and we should saver the sweet taste of victory - no one wants to meet us in the CL.

Rafa deserves full credit under the most difficult of circumstances and a big FIG you the owners.

Thats what makes our club the greatest in the world.

I said at the start of the season I`d take a hatrick in Rome and a decent challenge in the prem and I stick by that.
But make no mistake we need to win the prem next year, just like celtic when they managed to stop rangers getting the record 10 in a row, we`ll not let that sh!te past us.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

In fairness, some of the people who are fully paid up Rafalites have been saying for the last couple of weeks that they aren't about to change their view on the manager based on a couple of matches, and they're absolutely spot on. By the same token, those of us who are of a different persuasion are unlikely to change our opinion based on an albeit impressive win in Madrid.

That said, and I'm one of the biggest anti's going if not THE biggest (certainly the biggest something anyway), it just seemed the right time to give credit where credit was due to both the team AND THE MANAGER. I think it would be silly to pretend it ws anything other than a famous night for the club, regardless of where you sit on the various ongoing issues.

Here, Here the manager has taken  alot of stick recently, some justified some not so much, but tonight he deserves our respect and Gratitude. In the Champions league there surely isnt a more astute manager. Since he has come to the club we have come on leaps and bounds in Europe and our a genuine force that are feared throughout Europe, if only the likes of Stoke and Fulham were the same  :D

Since Benitez has come we have defeated Real Madrid, Juventus, AC milan, Inter and Barcelona, 5 of the biggest teams outside of England, that is amazing, i mean could you imagine that a 5 years ago? not a chance
