Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

bigmick wrote:Tricky game this one I think. Bolton have won handsomly a couple of times on the road recently and are no pushovers. That said, the law of averages says we'll win one at Home sooner or later and I fancy we'll put in a bit of a performance and win comfortably. i don't really know why I think that, I've just got a feeling.

Since my record of predicting results and scores is so abysmal, I had to quote this as it's a novelty. Like I said, just had a bit of a feeling.

Seems only fair to say seeing as we won and played well that once again if I had been around in the middle of the night, I would have said that I didn't like the team. I don't like Kuyt up top at all, and I think that Benayoun for Kuyt weakens us down the right. Equally, I don't like leaving Masherano on the bench at all.

All that said (purely for the benefit of my crew of stalkers who regularly accuse me of only appearing after defeats), you have to conclude that I was wrong. By all accounts a top performance and just what the doctor ordered to blow a few Home cobwebs away.

Despite being the arch anti-rotationalist, I guess this is one of the two times of the season (along with Easter) where some styling is probably going to be needed, so quickly do the games come. My guess is we will see a reversion to the 4-5-1 against Newcastle, and I would agree with it if we do. Hopefully whoever plays can keep up the momentum.

One thing which isn't really apparent yet but will become increasingly so as time goes on, is that each time we match the results of the teams following us the pressure on them just cranks up a notch. The number of games they have to bridge the gap ticks down and they simply cannot afford to lose ground. If, and pobviously it's a fairly speculative and hopeful if, we could string seven or eight wins on the bounce together now it could get really interesting.

The reverse of all the draws, and the "wasted opportunites to really open up a gap", is that the chasers wasted opportunities to catch up as well. We are now entering a crucial stage of the whole race, in which it is fair to say there are now officially three runners.

Probably our best performance of the season (admittedly against a poor side), we passed slick and fast and with Alonso and Gerrard basically given the freedom of the park always looked on top. I was unhappy before the game with Benayoun playing, but he had a great first half , worked hard and made his usual tricky runs, aided by some excellent early balls from Gerrard and Alonso.

The only real negative was that we didn't have the game sewn up in the first half , but Keane soon sorted that out in the second half (A  bit too soon for me as I missed the goal). I thought Kuyt stuck out like a sore thumb today, everyone else was moving and passing slick and quick ...... Kuyt was just Kuyt  :D

One thing I thought helped us today was our defence. They all played their part in getting attacks going , supporting attacks and even supplying subtle through balls and some good shots at goal. I just hope we can maintain something like the aggression and adventure we showed today in the weeks to come.

We LOOKED like a title challenging team today.

Great show from the lads. Completely bossed the game. Solid, no messing about, goals. Good strikes from Robbie and a nice knock in from Al. Poor Jaskelinen was left exposed far too much.

Looked a very strong attacking outfit today. 2 attacking forwards, plenty of choice. Liverpool carved Bolton open very nicely and made good use of the wings as well.

Absolutely no complaints......wayhey!  :D

I'd have to disagree with you there Mick, but on a condition. Aside from playing away and playing the big four (inc. Everton) at home, I wouldn't play Mascherano at home at all.

I'm a big fan of Mascherano by the way. At home against the smaller clubs we need a more attacking impetus and Mascherano offers none of this unfortunately. On the contrary, he offers too much of the opposite effect and we play too defensively, susequently losing points.

To the game in hand, however, seen it first hand and I can honestly say that it was the most consistent game i've seen pretty much all season. Admittedly, Bolton offered virtually nothing but to perform comfortably across all sides of the park is to be commended. Particular note goes to Insua, Carragher (what an effort!!!) Hyypia and Keane with minor notes to El Zhar and Xabi (it galls me to think we paid £13m for Pennant and Dossena when we had Insua and El Zhar sitting there - dear oh dear) - but as mentioned, everyone played well and it seems particularly unfair to highlight one player.

The crucial result will be against Newcastle - get 3 points and we go into the New Year top of the league with Torres and Skrtel fully fit. Joy of joys.  :buttrock

Agreed S@int we looked really strong today and showed a lot of determination to get top again after Chelsea won earlier in the day.

I just want to agree with what your saying about the defence being a key factor in today's win; at points it was as if Carragher was a midfielder and whenever I heard Insua's name he was deep in the Bolton half and when they did clear the ball, our defence was high enough up the pitch to quickly restart the attack.

We gave Bolton little space and time to breathe and should have had the game finished quicker than what we took.

Overall I'm chuffed with today, we usually do well this side of the season and long may it continue!  :)

a note to the anti masch and home crowd.  Is it a different proposition when Torres is in the team?  I am not talking about the lowest of the lows now, but I could see mach being useful against mid table teams at home if we have torres. In theory it should allow us to get stevie further up the the pitch while continuing to dominate the play in the middle.  Maybe it would become more of a viable option if we had a bigger goal scoring threat than Kuyt out wide right.

Fantastic result just as i predicted. Glad keane scored. Common lads keep it up. Mannure just about won 1-0. Friggin annoying man. What pi$$es me off is when we win 1-0 people say oh they just about won but when mannure scrape 1-0 wins no one says anything. A$$holes.
Anywayz arsenal could say goodbye to the title looool. Next up is newcastle will be tough but i have faith we will win.

Someone mentioned in the thread earlier about Rafa not showing emotion or even smiling when we scored. I don't think its a bad thing myself as he also doesn't usually let his head drop or show too much emotion when we conceed either.

Tonight (m.o.t.d.) I watched the exact opposite reation from Martin O'Neill. He always looks fully committed to his team and lets his emotions out unrestrained when  Villa score.

While they both offer total contrasts I don't believe it means more to one than the other, just a case of different strokes for different folks.

I bet Sammy Lee enjoyed the victory as much as anyone today though. It must feel good after the torrid time he had as manager of Bolton to win with such style and such a good performance.

Gotta love this quote from Megson after the game:

"But we did not want to play 4-4-2 at Anfield, because Liverpool go through you like a knife through butter when you do that.

"And that is what happened a few times in the second half when we did try to push more men forward.''

Well played redmen, walk on!

Just finished watching the match. Superb result and we probably played our best football this season.

C'mon lads! Let's put Newcastle to bed and end the year on a high.
