Fergie surprised Liverpool paid £20m to sign Keane from Spurs

High price: Robbie Keane
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his surprise at Liverpool’s big-money purchase of Robbie Keane.

The Manchester United boss was happy to pay £30.75m to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham but he has questioned the £20m Rafa Benitez paid to lure Keane from White Hart Lane.

United face bitter rivals Liverpool on Saturday and asked if any pre-season transfers had impressed him, Fergie said: 'The big surprise was Liverpool paying £20million for Keane.'
Keane has yet to score after playing five games since his move from Spurs.

I think we paid over the odds for Keane, but there is no need for fkn Whiskey Nose to rub it in! I hope Keane shuts his mouth by scoring against the mancs!

Well it seems a mind game to put pressure on the player.

The last one to do such a thing was Rafa with Drogba, remember?

Hopefully the same thing will happen.

Bubbletop hasn't even played for the mancs yet so perhaps he may come to regret his words. Quite how you fit in Tevez, Rooney and Berbatov into one side is something he's got to figure out.

As for Gerrard and Torres, may not be the worst thing if they do miss this game. They didn't exactly stop the run of bad results, perhaps it's better to play players fergie doesn't know very well and make it harder for him to know what to expect. After all, all the manc defenders do is what a lot of teams do and that's to make sure Torres doesn't get past them one way or another. The only problem is, without Gerrard or Torres where are the goals going to come from?

Mods, quick, remove this before Bigmick reads it and faints!

I think we always have to choose the best players for each game. In some games you might have a weak LB on front of you and use Pennant to take advantage of it, other times you'd need a right midfielder.

Perhaps you may even want to pick Alonso over Mascherano for certain european games...

But if fit, and no risk of injury Gerrard and Torres should play, I think Ferguson would choose this two not to play everyday of the week!

The point is fergie hasn't exactly had a hard time containing the likes of Torres and Gerrard, stick someone he doesn't know and he may not even bother sticking tight marking on them. How often have we been caught out by the manc on the pitch you'd least expect to score the winner?

Sorry mate, could you explain why that's NOT contradictory?

The Manc's fully expect to win this one and that f*cks me off big time, but they've been lacking penetration in their opening games, just as we have. The difference is, they have players who can turn it on at any moment and create/score/put us under massive pressure. Without Torres and Gerrard, we have Keane who can do that, and really nobody else stands out, and Keane alone isn't enough. On the face of it, a draw looks highly likely, and games against them are always tight, with few chances, so the question is how do we score and where is the threat going to come from? A set piece?, a defensive f*ck up on their part? I can't see where we'd get a goal from if Gerrard and Torres* are out, and if they are, our best bet would be to try and strangle the life out of the match, just as we did against Villa in order to get a draw. It wouldn't be a bad result and without the right players, we have no option but take that approach. Riera has to start, he should give us better shape and an ability to stretch them as their midfield will be packed with Anderson, Carrick/Hargreaves and Scholes. There's no way we'll be able to play through that trio.

*It depends on the level of risk, but if the level of risk is only slight then I'd consider starting starting one or t'other. Few aspiring title-winning sides go into these types of games with the intention of stifling the game to achieve a draw, and that's why it's so important we try and win - we can only do that with Torres or Gerrard.

Well I know I'll get called defeatist, but I'd take a draw as of now all day long. A defeat might not be a mortal blow but it'd be not a million miles off it considering what it'd do to our confidence, whereas a draw whilst being in the middle of not exactly fluent form, with a couple of major injury concerns wouldn't be a bad effort at all. As I've said lots of times, you don't win the title in September, but you can make a good job of losing it as we've proved a couple of times recently.

If it's 0-0 with twenty minutes left, I'd expect Rafa to batten down the hatches. I'd do exactly the same TBH, only I'd be going into the match very cautious, and beginning the batten down with half an hour to go. It's worth remembering that if we drop two points here, so will they and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the World if in going all out for the win (which they will at the end they always do) they left a gap for us to nick it.

Sooner or later (obviously) we will beat them in the league. Quite often these sequences are broken in the most undeserving and bizarre ways. Wouldn't it be sweet if we played sh!t (again), got battered, and nicked it 1-0 with a dying seconds goal from our new signing? Feck me Keane could do his somersault and shotgun celebration in front of the Kop and we'd love him forever. Dreaming perhaps, but keep it sensible and most importantly don't lose, and you never know it might just happen.

I think over the past few years at Anfield Fergie has been taking a leaf out of Houlliers book...... play it tight and hope for a bit of luck to snatch a goal. So if we want a draw I think we could get one without much problem, our problems are if we want to win the game.

Without Torres an Gerrard I think our only hope is to play it as tight as we can and hope lady luck smiles on us for a change.

I just wish Rafa would try using his subs when they are NEEDED, rather than seemingly waiting till the clock tells him there is 25mins to go. If someone is having a bad game ......drag the fker off even if its only half time. Although if he makes subs like he did against Villa maybe we should hope he leaves it as late as possible :D

My heart says we can win this, my head tells me the same, but only with a lot of luck.

If Torres and Gerrard don't play, I think things won't flow as well and we can expect some scrappy play and not too many goals. I can see us having a few scares at the back but usually pretty solid.  I have a feeling masch will have a great game (if he isnt red carded  :D) and scoring a goal himself.  1-0 to us

Yea, I didn't mean it like that.  Once I re-read it I knew it was going to confuse people.  Re-editing for sense purposes  :D
