Much better plays out there for what kind of money Villa want fo Barry, just means the scouts need to work a little harder.

I would rather see alonso spraying killer balls all over the field all day long anyway.

apparently where hanging onto being a top four team and villa are going to replace us, must be all those top signings there making

Rafa isnt serious about buying barry, its just to unsettle the player and put a spanner in mons masterplan of becoming a top 4 team

:D

i think they've been reading this....

then no, don't spend a lot on a ring...go to Argos instead!  :D

but back to the topic....no, Barry isn't worth 18 million and we should tell MON to stick the deal up his hole

At this point I just want this transfer saga to end one way or another (preferebly with us not getting screwed over by Villa aka paying way over the odds).

From the Express and Star

--Original Link Here--

Gareth Barry will bid a bitter farewell to Villa next week just as American keeper Brad Guzan arrives in Martin O’Neill’s changing squad.

Barry’s disputed exit to Liverpool is now just days away after the Anfield club finally struck a deal over the methods of payment in what will be a record sale for Villa.

Liverpool are paying around £15m in cash and throwing right-back Steve Finnan into the pot as well and that will go ahead within 72 hours now that Villa have agreed a time scale of staggered cash payments from Anfield.

That closing act of an angry farewell will coincide with 23-year-old Guzan being recruited for about £1m to fill one of Villa’s two goalkeeping vacancies .

I'd be happy enough with that deal, staggerd payments and another bit of dead wood of the wage bill, there was never a hope in hell we would hand over 18.

ARSENAL have made a sensational 11th-hour move to hijack Gareth Barry’s move to Liverpool.

The Mersey giants were locked in high-level talks with Aston Villa all day yesterday, as they haggled over the price for the Midlanders’ captain.

But Gunners boss Arsene Wenger declared his own interest in midweek and Arsenal officials have contacted Villa to find out the latest position.

While no official bid has been lodged, the Gunners are prepared to offer cash plus a fringe player like defender Justin Hoyte.

Wenger would be able to increase his bid if Emmanuel Adebayor and Alex Hleb were to be sold, as they could bring in around £45m between them.

He has long admired Barry and, having lost Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan and with Gilberto heading for Panathinaikos, has decided to act.

Villa are holding out for £18m cash. If Arsenal agreed a deal, Barry would become their record buy.

Liverpool do not want to go higher than £15m cash plus add-ons, which would take the eventual fee to £17m.

bit unfair to say Finnan is dead wood....but i guess 15 million is better than 18.  Still 6 million too much in my view.

Come on the gooners. It's a lot for a player that old and with little prospect of getting most of that back if he flops. If we sold him in three years time we'd be lucky to get 1/3 of that fee, a few manc fans on another board I go on were not so keen on Berbatov for £20m given his age when they could get a younger player for about the same.

But then "proven in the Premiership" always gets a mention, what doesn't come with that "guarantee" is the guarantee the player will fit in at the new club
