Even if he's on £100k a year, which I doubt he is, that's only £5.2m a year and 3 x £5.2m isn't £18m so if we can do it that way we should look into it as it would only be more expensive if he has four years left and I get the feeling you can only do it in the last two or one. I suggest that may be the best way forward for football, abandon transfer fees and just make teams buy out contracts

That could be the best way around this if it doesn't get resolved soon.

I read he got fined two weeks wages which was said to be around 80 grand so he must be on 40 grand per week*. I feel sorry for him if this move fails to go ahead, he is already hated by the majority of Villa fans and since there has been no news of any other clubs being interested he could be left in a very awkward situation.

Personally I feel that to much has happened for him NOT to join us now and it looks sure to happen in the next couple of days. I get the feeling that once the deal goes through it will kick off a lot of transfer activity for a few clubs and the silly season will start.

* Disclaimer - that was just something I read, I have no inside knowledge on Gareth Barry his agent or Aston Villa  :)

he's got 2 years left on his contract:

Aston villa player profile

states that last season he signed till 2010.

which is fair enough I suppose. We all think that his valuation is far too much and over priced. But at the end of the day that is what he's worth to Villa.

I dont blame MON for sticking by his guns as far as a transfer fee is concerned. I think he's been a bit of a kn0b in the way he's acted recently, but I think he's doing the right thing (as far as villa are concered) regarding holding out for their valuation. For him its a win-win siutuation. As now all that'll happen is we will improve our bid AGAIN to get him - or they will get to keep their club captain and best player of last season.

I have absolutely ZERO respect for Barry and the way he handled himself in the press re: MON. For a club captain to conduct himself like he did is inexcusable. IF that's the type of bloke he is, I wouldn't go near him with a bargepole...Leave him to fester and rot in Brum, I say...

TBH,

he's only really got 2/3 good years in him and undeniably he's was at his peak last season.

It’s probably already been mentioned but we’re not weak in this area, If we decide to keep Alonso we have lots of options, Lucas, Masc, Alonso, Gerrard, & Plessis for cover.

If we hurl £18mill at Barry I’ll be infuriated,  a total waste of money.

The way the market works is a player is only worth what someone is willing to pay, Spurs for example were willing to pay £18 mill for Bent, so that’s what he was worth, patently no better than santa cruz, Mcarthy, or tbh  Crouchie. But as they were WILLING to pay the amount he was sold.

Apropos Barry, we don’t need him and if Benitez really wants him the shrewdest piece of business is to leave it. No other team wants him and the big teams who can afford the extravagance of 18mill don’t need him.  So Come January we’ll be able to snap him up.

Personally if we were gonna  spun.k a shed load of monies on an English player it should be Bentley. He’s Younger, arguably more gifted and he plays in a position we essentially NEED!!!!!!

I agree.  Barry's best form has been since MON went to Villa.  I have no problem with a player wanting to leave but Barry has gone about it the wrong way.

no. Barry simply spoke the truth. MON was saying one thing to the media but he has not done anything to assure Barry his future lies with villa. he simply got frustrated and vented his anger to the media and villa lost their pride due to that thus the ban and the fine.

will this sorry saga ever come to an end, SG needs to have a word in barrys ear and tell him to put in a transfer request, then we offer 13 million and dont budge unless another party enter the bidding

I don't know if i've ever known a transfer to cause so much aggravation among LFC fans. It seems that the longer this goes on the worse the whinging gets. As far as i can see:

- Barry is a bloody good player
- He's maybe not quite as good as Alonso on top form (of 2 years ago) BUT his form has been better the past two years
- He's a better player than Hargreaves and Carrick in my opinion
- If he's a better player than those two then why all the comotion about the transfer fee?
- Assuming we sell Alonso the net spend on Barry will be fairly small, a couple of mill i guess.
- I keep reading 'he's only worth £12 million'. Villa don't want to sell, he's their best player (by far) so that is the sort of money you have pay. Was the same with Carrick at utd and Wright-Phillips going to Chelsea. Why are you so aghast and suprised at the price?
- Martin O'neil, he's such an ar...sehole isn't he? So mean for not letting Barry go for whatever we want to pay, it's ridiculous him demanding all that money for the player he desperately wanted to build his team around? Wake up people, if the situation was reversed and this was Benitez standing firm over our best player with Madrid (or some other club) sniffing around we would all be bowing down at his feet.
- As for the price, I wish they'd just fu..c..king pay it and get the player in.

leave him at Villa....it will cause so many problems in the dressing room that MON will be offering the player to us.

Everything seems to indicate that it's only a matter of time before we sign him.

Villa are in a more precarious position negotiation-wise given the events of the past few days, but it's now at the stage where there isn't much to negotiate - perhaps the difference between £15m - £18m.

I think it's too much and perhaps not worth the bother, but Rafa seems intent on getting him, and that's his managerial prerogative - which I support.
