this is spinning out far too much now, either sign him or move on rafa

I wouldn't say that, no one was really producing anything.

Were they playing poorly?  No, really tight defense.  At times it looked like a 6-2-2 the italians were playing.  Even though Torres and Villa didn't rip through them, doesn't mean they lost form.  Take a look at the substitution that almost lost the game for them, Torres for Guiza.  Guiza blew 2 chances, didn't pass in another great chance, and missed his PK.

Several reasons

1) Because Guiza scored more goals in a smaller club

2) Because Aragones' obsession is to consider the spirit of the national squad as it was a club football team, he trusts in a block, and sudden or punctual form states won't imply entering or dropping of the team. He insists more on the idea of team rather than the idea of "selection of players"

3) Because he had a spat with Raul in the world cup, this is rumour terrain, but Aragones wasn't happy with the influence of Raul in the dressroom

4) Or to put it simply like Aragones did, because we never won anything with Raul.

I agree Barry could be more consistent, infact I've no doubt he is. But Alonso is capable of reaching the higher standard during a game. Alonso has at times shown an ability and urgency to take the game by the scruff of the neck, much like Gerrard and leads by example on these occassions.

What I would say is, just because he's been below his best doesn't mean he's been poor. He's still been one of our top players. The fact remains though that there are far more urgent concerns than replacing Xabi Alonso.

Its this that is bothering me. Everybody is talking about Gareth Barry but it seems he is going to replace Alonso. And thats were Barry's versatility kicks in. He can play this there and the other but he isnt an expert in them positions, his best position is CM. And that for me is were the argument for Barry against Alonso fails.

Forget Barry, we need natural positions, not a stop gap filler.

I think thats the point isn't it, Barry is a good player whatever position he plays but if money is as Tight as reported, that 20m needs to go towards helping funding bids for a winger (we have none) and another forward (we have One) not a 28yo player who can 'provide cover,'  Maybe Rafa has more cash than he's letting on.

I have to say it is kinda disappointing that we are link to Barry move. Though i rate him as a player but why do we need to take a risk to swap Alonso for him? It feels like we are not making progress whereas i heard Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Nasri for something like 12 million. If we have the kind of money for Barry, why not spend it on someone like Nasri who is younger & fit our team nicely (He can play in the wing). Moreover, the resale value of him will defintely more than that of Barry. I doubt we will get anything back from a Barry deal... Just my frustrated concern....

Had to laugh at rumours on the bbc gossip page that Rafa wants £50m to sign Barny, Villa, Silva and Alves. If Barny costs £15m then that would mean we'd get Villa, Silva and Alves for £35m combined. Yeah right!

From tonights echo, just clearing up the rubbish from todays mirror..............

Rafa Benitez slams £50m demand to American ownersJun 24 2008

EXCLUSIVE by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez today rubbished reports claiming he has demanded a £50m transfer fund from the club's American owners.

The Reds boss woke up this morning to several stories which suggested he was risking Anfield’s fragile peace pact by demanding money for David Villa, Daniel Alves and David Silva – as well as Gareth Barry.

But Benitez says he has not spoken to any journalists and has no idea where the reports originated.

“The stories are ridiculous. Total rubbish,” said Benitez. “They have me trying to sign Daniel Alves, who already has an agreement with Barcelona, so how could I be trying to sign him?

“I am working hard with Rick Parry, who is in regular contact with the Americans, and there are no problems.

“The reports are just unbelievable.”

Benitez has accepted that he must juggle his resources this summer, moving some players on to bring in others.

He has already moved on John Arne Riise, and Andrea Dossena will put pen to paper on a £7m transfer from Udinese as soon as he returns from honeymoon.

Benitez is also trying to reach agreement with Aston Villa over Gareth Barry’s transfer as the next priority.

Parry working yea tell me another , he'd probably only know when its transfer season when we're in august , when the season's started , rafa has got every right to demand 50 million , the owner's havan't openly come out and say that they are going to give him a certain amount so rafa has to take things into his own hands , 50 million sounds fair , he'd still get some from the sale of alonso and maybe crouch? so total we have abt 75 million to spend if we get the 50 , enough for barry , silva and villa

How much did Barca sign Alves for? . Secondly i think this deal is more of less over unless MON drops his price , read somewhere that rafa is going to pull the plug and look somewhere else , cause o neil has given a ridiculous evaluation . If Alonso does go , than we need to sign a replacement unless we revert back to the 4-4-2 with lucas for cover at the central role . We could ease plessis into the squad also and use the money to sign either a right winger or left winger , striker or move babel up front and sign 2 top class wingers

We are STILL negotiating for Gareth Barry?

This negotiation is ridiculous.

Now, MON wants 20M, Peter Crouch, and the province of Alsace-Lorraine.
