He would either partner Alonso or Sissoko, both partnerships have their fair share of problems. The Gerrard/Sissoko partnership is one option, the problem is Sissoko is not a natural defensive midfielder. He tends to play in front of Alonso, stopping attacks before they happen and regularly winning the ball back.

Gerrard would naturally want to play futher up the pitch, so you would have two central midfielders who would be more efficient playing in more of a advanced positions. The other alternative is a partnership with Alonso. The problem is, Alonso is more of a with-draw playmaker, similar to Pirlo. He is to good a player (technically) to be used as holding midfielder.

A partnership of Gerrard/Alonso would present similar problems to what the Gerrard/Lampard partnership for England did. Basically they wouldn't compliment each others natural game, they would rather hamper or restrict. It wouldn't work.

I agree with you entirely about a Gerrard-Sissoko partnership.

I disagree about Gerrard and Alonso, however.  Alonso naturally sits deeper, in the "holding" role (although he's much more than that) and so Stevie's all-actionm style will not hamper his game too much.  In fact, I don't think Alonso's game has very much similarity to Lampard's at all since Lampard is a poor-man's Steven Gerrard: always trying to get forward and shoot from the edge of the box.

In theory, Gerrard and Alonso should work a treat as a CM partnership.  They have not hit the heights as a partnership in the past, I think, because Gerrard tried to do too much.  He'd drop back to help win the ball and often ended up too close to Xabi rather than offering an outlet.  Now that we have a better squad and a better grasp of Rafa's tactics, I would think that Gerrard no longer feels the need to be everywhere and do everything himself.  This would free up Alonso to do what he does so well and they could really work as a unit.

Having said that, Sissoko is an immense asset and we're a better side with all 3 on the pitch.  As such, Stevie will start games out wide for the foreseeable.

it's nonsense to say that the gerrard-alonso central midfield partnership in a 4-4-2 doesn't work. since rafa came to the club, due to injuries, suspensions and the emergence of sissoko, they've probably only played 6-8 games together as a pair.

2.  What is his best position for Liverpool, when taking into account our current squad and tactical preference?
Is it different from question 1?
If so then what does it change to, and why?

3.  Momo and Alonso make a very good partnership (and have a lot of potential to grow), do you think that it is worth sticking with these guys and letting Gerrard fill whatever midfield role which is weakest?

4.  Gerrard playing right/free-role with Momo and Xabi central gave very good results last season.  Fans loved it when Gerrard played well, and said that it wasnt his fault when he played poorly (as it was the fact that he wasnt playing central/got isolated/etc).  Is this another case of people blaming the manager when its the fault of the player?  Or has Rafa got it wrong?

5.  Do you think that at the end of his career he will look back at his flexability as being a blessing or a curse?

bonus question:  A few people have suggested that Gerrard will leave at the end of the season after a frustrating year becasue he was played out of position all season.  Do you think that this is true?

1. His driving runs, hard tackles and eye for goal makes him one of the, if not "THE" best central midfielder in the country.

2. A free role. He is so versatile and intelligent that he should be allowed to do what he likes whenever he wants.

3. Just because he is so good, he shouldn't just be used as a sure thing wherever we haven't got top class.

4. 6 of one, 1/2 a dozen of the other. Some days, like every player, Gerrard has a bad one and on others Rafa, like even the best manager around, Rafa gets it wrong.

5. Blessing.

BQ. Who knows? I hope not and I don't think he will, but we shall see.

I guess this is the problem. I do not know any player who is accepted as legendary or star played so different positions..

Zinedine Zidane played all over the midfield and he's most certainly a legend.  Ronaldinho's another who roams all over the pitch, regardless of where he starts a match.  The best midfielders in the world aren't necessarily nailed down to a particular position over the course of the game, regardless of what the teamsheet says.

Zidane was playmaker and Ronaldinho is free player behind the forward. They are not asked to play a certain position on the teamsheet. Besides, this is  really not necessary since they have extraordinary talent for offense and noone would like them to play in a specific zone as this would weaken their offensive power. Neither Zidane nor Ronaldinho has defensive duties. They are legendary with their offensive talent. The argument that best midfielders in the world aren't necessarily nailed down to a particular position, I believe, cannot be exampled with Zidane and Ronaldinho.

Gerrard has both sides. This is the reason i think he would fit the best in front of the defense, just like Patrick Viera.

putting gerrard in front of defence is crazy, you want him to play like how he played in England under Sven? having Fat Frank on attack and Gerrard wasting his talent. More overly we need him on the offensive, i will prefer if he and Alonso attacks and Sissoko stays 100% at the back, he sucks when he's attacking.
