Ciggy wrote:Rafael Benitez has played down the hype surrounding Peter Crouch's recent goalscoring exploits and insisted: "He has to keep his feet on the ground."

The in-form Liverpool striker is currently the darling of the British media after netting two more international goals against Andorra at the weekend to take his tally to ten goals in his last nine England games.

Benitez is delighted to see Crouch winning over the people who doubted his ability when he first arrived at Anfield, but he's mindful of the need to ensure his striker stays focused on his job at Anfield.

"I am very happy for Peter but also worried," said Benitez today. "People are talking highly of him right now and as a manager that's good because it's always important for a player to have confidence. But I also have to say to him 'be careful' because things can change in a week in football. He must keep his feet on the ground.

"When people are saying nice things about you it's sometimes easy to stop working as hard because you think you're better than you are.

"I'm sure that won't be the case with Peter because he is clever and he will carry on working hard and moving forward."

If ever Shanks wanted to posess a man I think he achieved it :D

Cant believe he is breaking Rafa's rules straight after being instructed to keep his feet on the ground he goes and scores with a bicycle kick  :p

Before anyone starts slating me for this he is doing what I want him to do more of ie score goals. However I would like to put his goalscoring 'feats' into perspective and I'll put his feats back on the ground.......

Uruguay (14) 1 goal
Greece (32) 2 goals
Trinidad (61) 1 goal
Macedonia (67) 1 goal
Jamaica (74) 3 goals
Hungary (80) 1 goal
Andorra (132) 2 goals

If you hadn't guessed that's August's FIFA rankings in brackets, if you multiply the rating of the teams by the goals and work out the average ranking of the sides he's scored against you come up with 79th which is Estonia/Latvia standard

And for any Northern Irish out there, Healy has scored 19 goals in 46 internationals (although I couldn't track one down)

Luxembourg (195) 2 goals
Malta (122) 1 goal x 3 occaisions
Serbia (33) 1 goal
Denmark (17) 1 goal
Bulgaria (36) 1 goal
Iceland (106) 1 goal
Norway (49) 1 goal
Estonia (=78) 1 goal
Wales (56) 1 goal
Austria (57) 1 goal
Germany (9) 1 goal
England (5) 1 goal
Spain (9) 3 goals

If you apply the same averaging principle Healy you come up with 43rd which is Slovakia. You also have to bear in mind Crouch plays for the team ranked 5th while Healy plays for the team ranked 72nd.

So he's scored a lot of goals, well done Peter, but the above was mainly in response to Gerrard's top scorer for England comments and others who have gone well OTT in response to his good form

You can only score against the teams you are playing. If it was so easy to score against these teams surely Fat Boy Frank should have broken all records. If I am honest I have to agree that Crouch's record has been boosted by the quality(or lack) of the opposition. He has done much better both for England and Liverpool than I ever expected, so Im made up with him at the moment.

Well done to Healy as well of course.

kuyt and bellamy will be rafa's favourable strike force (i hope)

people are too keen to thank crouch and claim he's now a liverpool great. in my eyes, he's not a good footballer - he's just an annoyance for the opposition. you could play elton john or michael jordan up front and get a similar return.

fact of the matter is, how many times have you seen crouch landed with a golden opportunity to score and he doesnt? he scores the odd goal in a game where any other striker no doubt would have got his hat-trick.

have you ever seen him strike the ball sweetly, coz i STILL havent (even thought i thought 'striker' was a clue to that attribute being important). I've NEVER seen him SHOOT like a striker is expected to.

He cant header, cant shoot, he has no pace, no strength, no balance - like i sed 'a distraction' (elton john would be even better in this position)

*BUMP*

remember when i said, "kuyt and bellamy will be rafa's favourable strike force," and u all started bombing on me and being rude.

on that note, i'd like public apologies from davo_lfc and the rest please. please include in your statements that you are grateful that PabloAimar reminded you all of the fact that crouch was initially bought as a fringe player (and that is what purpose he will now serve for the remainder of his liverpool career) thanks to the arrival of dirk kuyt and craig bellamy.

thanks,

PabloAimar  :p
