Hang on just a minute. Before we build up Benitez to be some sort of managerial genius perhaps we should remember an important little fact.He took over a Valencia team that had just played in two succesive Champions league finals(2000 and 2001).Thats something that no english team has managed since Liverpool in the eighties.Hector Cuper was the man who built that club up,Benitez just carried on his work.Valencia were probably the best team in Europe when he took over so lets not get carried away with his achievments.Liverpool are a long way behind Valencia and a much harder job.I fear we are making a massive mistake. What about Hector Cuper? He was after all the real man behind Valencias success.

Guillem Balague - a Sky Sports pundit for their Spanish football coverage ( also a close freind of Benetiz )- said:

"Liverpool would become like the great AC Milan team. Defending as a unit but always attacking as one as well. He will change Liverpool and he will make them a force again....."

that'll do me! :)

anfieldadorer wrote:The agent of Valencia coach Rafael Benitez has insisted the Spaniard has not been approached by Liverpool. The Sunday Times reported Benitez, who guided Valencia to the league title and the Uefa Cup this season, had been shortlisted to replace Gerard Houllier.

Charlton's Alan Curbishley, Porto's Jose Mourinho and Gordon Strachan were the other names on the shortlist. Benitez's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told BBC Sport: "Nobody from Liverpool has been in contact with him."

On Monday, Houllier parted company with Liverpool after six years in charge at Anfield. Last week, Quilon was reported to have said Benitez had received an offer from an English club.
"I cannot comment further from what I said the other day. We do not have any agreement in place at present with Liverpool football club," said Quilon.

Since taking over from Hector Cuper in June 2001, Benitez has guided Valencia to two Primera Liga titles. He joined Valencia from Tenerife after a short spell with Extremadura. Previously, he had undistinguished tenures at Valladolid and Osasuna, while he also spent two years at the helm of Real Madrid's high profile B team.

Yo anfieldadorer, how do you change your font on your posts?  I thought you couldn't post html on here.

He will say that until he's seen out his 15-day clause, then he's off. Expect a sudden u-turn

Agree, let's face it, he very well can't turn around and let every thing out. They have to keep thing's like this quite until they happen. He's probably been strictly imstructed by both parties to say that.

Well done to Porto tonight and Mourinho has done a fantastic job but I think there is something a bit too crazy about the way he acted afterwards when instead of celebrating he took off his medal and walked to straight to the Sky Sports interview in the tunnel where he admitted he would be moving to England.  Often when somebody is that obsessed about his work they hit a brick wall at some stage.  Maybe tonight will be the highlight of Mourinho's career and perhaps we should let Chelsea have him.
