Out of the options i'd prefer Pennant over Alves, SWP & Joaquin. The reason being I don't really rate Alves, SWP is not going to be sold for 8m and we're the last team Chelski will sell him too. Joaquin is way to expensive and to be honest he looked pretty average in the world cup (if thats anything to go by)

Pennant is by far the best value for money even if he does need taming a little

Are these opinions on Alves and Joaquin based on seeing them play in maybe 3 or 4 games? ????

I for 1 are the first to say i have not seen enough of either one to have an educated opinion. I can only go by what i have read on the net and we know how reliable alot of content on the net is... its a forum for dicks to express their opinions on matters they know little of...

Yes... I know i have just shot myself in the foot...

I am having my doubt about value for money when it comes to Pennant. many just seem to asume he will come on the cheap for 5 million, maximum. I tend to disagree, as I think Brum will hold us for ransom on this one demanding 7 or something like that.

And if we have to shell out over 5 million for Pennant it is not good value for the money. I much rather use what we have in that case.

I think that Rafa is biding his time on a right midfielder, as we have no urgent need.  Right midfield was one of our strongest positions last year with Stevie playing there (and midfield great without him as well :) )
The way I see it, Rafa has to keep Momo, Alonso and Gerrard in the starting XI every week.  That leaves 2 options: one is a 3-5-2/4-5-1 witha three man central midfield or just keep Stevie on the right where he was last season.
I know that if Gerrard gets injured we will have poor cover, but i think that Bellamy/Gonzelez/Kewell/Zenden/Garcia could handle it between them.
Bide your time Rafa, I would prefer to wait it out and get someone like Alves then buy Pennant as a last resort.

Has anyone on here seen much of Alves play? I've seen about 10 seconds of footage so i haven't got the first clue as to whether he is worth 12 million. Must admit i am more concerned about our strike force at the moment so if buying Pennant for a lot less money means Rafa has the money to splash on a striker then great. If Pennant comes in i don't think it will be to start outright as i expect (and hope) Stevie to play at least 50% of the games out on the right again next season. I think he's a better player roaming from that right-mid spot and his form last season backs that up. Also, i wouldn't be so sure that Alves (if he eventually comes) is expected to come in and play exclusively as a right winger. The signing of Aurelio on the left tells you Rafa is looking for Full-backs who are as effective going forward as they are defending. I'm sure if we sign Alves he will push Steve Finnan at right back as well as giving options at Right-mid.

Newspaper reports in the UK today claim that Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is prepared to offer Birmingham City £3million cash plus Djimi Traore to try and tempt them to allow Jermaine Pennant to make the switch to Anfield.

Pennant has been linked with the Reds ever since last season and he's keeping his fingers crossed that Rafa tables an official bid for him.

Traore has been told he doesn't figure in the manager's plans and he will be allowed to leave for around £2million although today's reports have him valued at around £1million.

It's a shame if we can't get Alves.  Oh well, Rafa's high on Pennant as well, so we shouldn't be disappointed.

Any deal that removes Djimi Traore from LFC is a good one in my book. :D

The deal with Alves looks doomed so if we can get Pennant for 3 million and get rid of Traore at the same time then thats great business.
It should then leave plenty of money to buy a big name striker.

I agree with Ace on this one. Put the Alves deal to bed, move for Pennant and get a striker signed up ASAP please Rafa.

Reports suggest that Liverpool will have to come up with £7million if they want to prise winger Jermaine Pennant away from Birmingham City.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is a fan of the former Arsenal winger, and it is thought he will pursue the player if a move for Sevilla's Daniel Alves eventually fails.
