What's all this nonsense about players - Gerrard or whoever - needing rests?

These guys are super fit, fed all the right things and trained in all the right ways - work hard a few hours a day and an hour and a half at the weekend. Wasn't a feature of Benitez' early days at Melwood the fierce training sessions? I remember reading how Danny Murphy said how tough it was. I think I also read somewhere that we would benefit at the end of the season because the players were so fit. As other teams (Everton?) ran out of steam our guys would be still strong as oxen.

They were knocked out of the FA Cup so haven't had that to content with and there's only one group stage in the CL. Most of the league cup campaign was played by the kids so they really haven't had too tough a season.

Was it in 1979 - an era when the players lived on steak and beer - that we won all before us using just 14 players?

Tired me hole. Gerrard looks like he would run three marathons back to back.

They have a month and a half to rest when the season ends.

Rest? Bollix to that.

:kungfu:

St Mike, I have played football at youth level and at semi professional level. And it doesn't matter how fit you are, if you play 3 games of 90 minutes in the space of 7 days you feel it.

The level they play at is much more demanding plus they train in between matches. I know they are a lot fitter but your body becomes physically tired, you ache, and just feel slow and sloppy. Obviously some people will feel it more than others.

I just think that keeping Gerrard fresh for the final run in would be wise, couple that with return of Alonso and the fact that there will not be any more opportunities to give him a breather makes my idea not seem so ludicrous. Biscan has shown some decent form and Welsh has broken into the first team, playing them 2 and having Gerrard and Alonso on the bench wouldn't have a disastrous affect on our performance.

:kungfu: Riise has played most games but has been subbed alot of the time, it would be great to give Gerrard a rest in an ideal world he does look a bit tired in the latter stages of games but its just not possible. Nicking 4th is vital and although Biscan and Welsh have come in and done a job, that is alongside Stevie, if we played the two of them away to city and rested Gerrard we would struggle. We need to get the points in the bag and then hopefully we can bring him off towards the end and get Alonso on to gain some fitness.

so guys, would you pick 451 or 4411 or 442? i personally prefer 4411 or 442 because we need to go for it and not sit back and wait for a counter attack. we are playing against a relatviely weak mid table side who might play a bit slackily due to the lack of ambition and must take advantage of that. though i agree we need to rests some of the overworked players, we simply do not have enough resources to replace them with with the exception for the midfield pairing (friggin injuries and baros suspension!). we need at laest one experienced commanding figure in the midfield, that is gerrard or even alonso.

According to latest news from Rafa,Alonso won't be playing 2moro as he doesn't want to risk him .. so,my preferable line-up would up;

                      Dudek

Finnan      Carra      Hyypia       Traore

Nunez      Gerrard     Biscan        Riise

               Garcia        Nando

Subs;

Carson
Alonso
Le Tallec
Smicer
Pelle

From the tone of Rafa's voice, Alonso wont even be on the bench. Lineup would then be:
                Dudek

Finnan  Hyypia  Carragher  Traore/Warnock

Garcia  Gerrard  Biscan  Riise
                Le Tallec
               Morientes

Sub: Carson, Pellegrino/Traore/Warnock , Smicer, Nunez, Welsh.

LINEUP CONFIRMED
                   Carson

Finnan  Pellegrino  Carragher  Warnock

   Garcia  Gerrard  Biscan  Riise
                   Le Tallec
                   Morientes

SUBS: Dudek, Welsh, Smicer, Traore, Hyypia

Few surprising changes, but not too worrying except for the bench. Wheres Nunez and Alonso?

well im predicting a tired performance from us even though we got quite a few fresh faces my original prediction was 1-1 but i think we can nick a single goal victory, we aint gonna be pretty but i think we will scrape through cos our luck and fortunes seem to be changing, unbeaten in 4 games!!!!

i just had a look at man citys team, reyna barton bosvelt musampa and sibierski, never had i looked at an opposition premiership team and been so confident of victory, that midfield combined are half wit at best and it would be a travesty if we dont dominate the midfield, im hoping the game wrapped up before the 60 min mark so a few players could rest before the juve game, scratch my earlier predictions im going for us to win 2-0, im going for riise and myself to score  :p
