I think that is a bit harsh that statement.

Fair enough he has gone down hill a bit in the last couple of seasons but he had 5 excellent seasons when he joined us where he was the best Keeper in the country, the only thing stopping him being his country's No.1 keeper was the misfortune to be around at the same time as an equally exceptional (although not necessarily better) keeper in Casillas.

As for now I think that if we can get a decent replacement from somewhere it would be in our and Reina's best interest for him to move on. He looks stale in his role here and without strong competition for his position I find it hard to see anything changing. Getting strong competition isn't easy as we have seen cause any team is going to struggle to have two top class keepers in the ranks and keep them both happy and sharp with only one position available each game.

I like Pepe and I detest overreaction. Yes he made a mistake yesterday. Did the punishment fit the crime? Did it fk !!! Aguerro scored an almost impossible goal and I applauded his audacity.

yeah, he made a bad decision yesterday but all the same he was a bit unlucky that aguerro managed to score from such a tight angle and from so far out.
hart made a similar error of judgement when he rushed out towards zabeletta (sp?) just as the defender was passing back to him, in that situation hart got that bit of luck that reina didnt, if zabeletta`s back pass would have crept inches inside the post instead of wide, and if aguerro`s shot would have sailed a few inches over the bar instead of in the net it would be hart getting the criticism instead of reina.

For me what's particularly disappointing about it is that Pepe's usually the first name we hear of wanting out for Champions league football.

nobody will be more disapointed about that than pepe himself, that situation could arise another ten times and the chances are that a goal wouldnt be scored.
he needs competition to be kept on his toes and what we have in jones is no where near good enough so we need not 1 but 2 keepers.
if he leaves who are we going to get? i hope its not going to be some young lad wet behind the ears that will take an age to come good. the papers were talking today that begovic will cost £15 mil, he's alright but not worth that figure, vorn will cost £10 plus as well so i cant see us going down the route of getting like for like.
look at manure and how they have struggled with their keepers, if pepe is on the move they will be in for him if he doesnt have his heart set on barca. what does that tell you, two of the biggest clubs in the world being interested tells me he is still a good keeper.
valdes might be an option but his age and salary might put the club off.
fwiw i do think pepe will leave but it will be worse for us if his replacement is jones or some young lad.

I know that Sky have come out with this statement. Does anybody know which eight goals they are referring to because I am sure that the goals were not all simply down to Pepe's mistakes and that our defence certainly contributed to the problem.

In one of the papers over here it was reported that Pepe has said after the game that we cannot challenge for the league or compete with Man U, City or Chelsea as we do not have big enough squads or enough money, if he did say this then looks like he is paving the way to leave.

I wouldn't have called for Reina being replaced after that Man City (and many others before in the season) debacle, but it's shameful that he had that audacity to say something like that, after a game in which we only drew because of his error. That makes me think that perhaps it is in the best interest of the club to replace him, but he will be very hard to replace IMO.

Pepe has been a model professional and I wouldn't trust a word that is printed in the press. They take everything out of context and belong in the gutter.

Pepe Reina has insisted that he is not to blame for Liverpool's failure in big games this season, despite his error costing the Reds against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Spaniard insists he is not concerned by his form, although the Anfield club have been linked with a name of other goalkeeping options, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly happy to sell Reina to Arsenal amid interest from the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool are currently nine points off the top four, but have failed to win a game against any top-half side this season, and Reina admits the Reds cannot compete with the Premier League's top sides.

"I think with the likes of City, United and Chelsea, they have a big edge over us at the moment, both financially and squad-wise," he told Marca.

"There's a reason they are so many points ahead of us, and it's not because of one or two better players. Right now we can't compete with the big guns.

"Some people say I've had a bad season, but honestly I think I only had three poor matches, at the beginning of the year.

"It's been a strange season for me because I've missed lots of games with injury. This has been the most unsettled season, both personally and as a team, since I joined the club.

"Liverpool is going through a transitional period, with new ideas and a different playing philosophy. That takes time. People have to be patient. It's normal for us to be erratic."

As well as interest from Arsenal, Reina has also been mentioned as a replacement for Victor Valdes, who is set to leave Barcelona ahead of his contract expiring in 2014, but the 30-year-old is not interested in such rumours.

"I have a Liverpool contract and I'm only thinking of playing for the club - I am calm," he explained.

"My dad has a past with Barca, he has affection for the club and perhaps that's why he said it. He wants the best for me. But I have a contract here and I have nothing else to say this.

"For me, Barca is the best in the world, for greatness and for style ... and Atletico are starting to equip themselves well, with a great coach. They are two great clubs. They are the two clubs where my father played and two great teams."

I hope he stays, as RTID has already alluded to in a earlier post when you are a big club trying to replace your keeper can become a complicated business.
It`s amazing how many talented goalkeepers turn into nervous wrecks the moment they walk through the gates at anfield or old trafford.
i have to admit though i dont like the signs, `i have a contract and i have nothing else to say` isnt exactly a glowing reference and i dont think his arl fella would have said those things to the press either if he knew his lad was genuinely happy on merseyside.
saying that things can change in football very quickly, if we have a good run in and end up 4th who knows what will happen.

I really hope he stays.

All players have a dip in form, the very fact that he has been touted as the Valdes replacement at Barcelona should say all that needs to be said about his quality as a keeper.

It woudl kill me if we got rid of him, only to see him become even better at Barcelona. Unlike outfield players, keepers mature in terms of quality far later into their careers - you only have to look at Brad Friedel.

For me Reina has given enough to this club to at least allow him an off season. He has made some mistakes but as he said himself this season has been unsettled between injuries and a new manager.

I really hope he stays.
