I recall many games where Murph sat back with Hamann and Gerrard (whilst indeed closer to central) was the most advanced of the three. Recall him playing on the left vs Charlton in late 2002/03.
A 2 season spell, inwhich his goal tally 13 was the lowest of his career.
There is no term advanced central midfielder.. so Gerrard often wrongly just gets lumbered into the generic term that doesnt apply to him. All i can say is thank Christ we didnt have anyone clueless like Andy Gray who whinged for many many years for him to play in central midfield.
Yes agreed re: the length of time he has played as CM but you have said he never was and never will be a CM. That statement is completely wrong. Out of the 12 odd seasons he has played for us 4 seasons, he has played as a CM, about 3 seasons he has played a RM and about 4 seasons he has played as AM (mainly due to Torres). That makes him a CM AND many more. It goes without saying that if he's playing as CM, he will score less goals than when he's playing as AM or any other more advanced role he will score more. This is because of his skill and talent and not because he is not a CM. You can't look at goals alone to claim that he's NOT a CM. In fact I'd like to see Gerrard as a most complete CM ever and I believe the older he gets the more he would need to revert to CM if he wants to prolong his career. The AM role actually takes out alot from him because he relies on his athleticism and not playmaking ability like some of the other AM's.
