I recall many games where Murph sat back with Hamann and Gerrard (whilst indeed closer to central) was the most advanced of the three. Recall him playing on the left vs Charlton in late 2002/03.

A 2 season spell, inwhich his goal tally 13 was the lowest of his career.

There is no term advanced central midfielder.. so Gerrard often wrongly just gets lumbered into the generic term that doesnt apply to him. All i can say is thank Christ we didnt have anyone clueless like Andy Gray who whinged for many many years for him to play in central midfield.

Yes agreed re: the length of time he has played as CM but you have said he never was and never will be a CM. That statement is completely wrong. Out of the 12 odd seasons he has played for us 4 seasons, he has played as a CM, about 3 seasons he has played a RM and about 4 seasons he has played as AM (mainly due to Torres). That makes him a CM AND many more. It goes without saying that if he's playing as CM, he will score less goals than when he's playing as AM or any other more advanced role he will score more. This is because of his skill and talent and not because he is not a CM. You can't look at goals alone to claim that he's NOT a CM. In fact I'd like to see Gerrard as a most complete CM ever and I believe the older he gets the more he would need to revert to CM if he wants to prolong his career. The AM role actually takes out alot from him because he relies on his athleticism and not playmaking ability like some of the other AM's.

Lovin the Russian dolls btw

When i state: Steven is not and has never been a central mid.. it is in the same context of Lineker is not and has never been a winger (even tho he played on the wing longer for Barca than Gerrard has in central mid for us).

As regards Steven playing on the right in 2005/06.. although he appeared in team sheets as being there, he wasnt a conventional right sided player as he often ended up coming inside and playing in the same advanced central mid role where hes played for the vast majority of his career. I can think of many assists/goals where Gerrard was centrally in the hole.. his lay off to Riise for the winner at Man City, his goal against Newcastle on boxing day, his two goals in the cup final (where he struck that last second equaliser is his position on the field). So whilst he appeared on the team sheets as being right in reality he was anything but. He kept the shape of the team when needed be, but constantly drifted in.

Advanced attacking central midfielder.. thats where Gerrard has made his name.. and while he may well end up retreating back due in central midfield due to age/inability to get up and down as he used to, it will be a huge loss to our creativity/cutting edge when that happens.

Still probably our best player even though he's 31 and he's had all those injuries and has been out of the pitch for some time. The thing about him is that not only he's a terrific player, but also when he's playing well the whole team plays well. People say that there are other players who can do that but I personally have never seen someone else who can do that as well as he does. Not even close actually. That's why he's the true definition of a leader. Captain focking fantastic  :buttrock

Ignore the signings. Imagine our performances and results if Geerard had been available for the whole season with Suarez. Top 4 already.

For starters, he made Carroll look like he might be worth the money

Exactly. Nothing spectacular
Just crosses, passes and runs that made sense and were kept simple.
We have been leaderless and floundering since Gerrards injury and lets hope his return inspires others to raise their game by imitating his play

So others are to blame for Carrolls situation?
