Another factor to be considered is that his amount of appearances have increased alot (playing every minute of the league season), which will obviously allow more time to make mistakes.  IMO the most glaring weakness in his game is the tendency to switch off mentally on occasion.  More time on the pitch, equals more time to switch off.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

To challenge for honours we need better defenders than him, the fact he has played every game is to his credit, but I still think we need someone else.

What you say is logical but must be taken in context of what has passed before him. Players in teh past have frequently played upto 80 games a season and still dominated 2-3 competitions with all teh added pressures of the March/April/May period. We need someone 'suited' to the task in every position.

I agree mate - I was merely saying he deserves some credit, as Kenny recently said too. I suppose the fact he has played every game highlights the fact many have been so injury prone, Agger and Aurelio for instance.

I wouldn't necessarily say we need to try and sell him, but we still need someone better than him as first choice.

From the Mirror.

Martin Skrtel insists that Liverpool can get back into the Champions League next season.

Liverpool missed out on Europe completely last term yet Skrtel reckons they can finish in the top four when the campaign kicks off next month.

The Reds defender was heartened by the way the previous campaign finished and says the players are determined to continue to improve.

“Our plan for this season is simple as usual –to win everything we possibly can,” said the Slovakian international.

“I can promise our fans that we will do everything to have a better season than the last one. And yes, we want to fight for the Champions League spot.

“The end of last season went very well and I believe we can continue to perform. I truly believe we belong in the top four.”

Skrtel, 26, is impressed by signings Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing –and believes Kenny Dalglish has bought wisely.

“Not much has changed in training, although I have seen some new faces,” the Kop ace said. “Charlie is a great player and I fully trust our manager when it comes to new players.”

Skrtel has just one winners medal from the Russian league title with Zenit St Petersburg.

He added: “I haven’t won that many trophies. I want to win them all.”

Skrtel isn't a bad player, but he's too inconsistent to be a regular. Too often he gets caught out or HOOFS it away to the opposition.

He is ok, but as Ben said he gives me nightmares when he plays because you know he will make a mistake somewhere that would cost us points

he wouldn't get a look in if it wasn't for the fact Agger's made of glass...

He definitely hasn't come as far along as I initially expected...... but not enough to ship him out IMHO. By no means should he be a 1st choice but a reasonably good back-up. I f his wages aren't exorbitant, we could do worse than hang on to him I reckon....

Me too, he's abysmal and has been since the moment he came to club, weve never replaced Hyypia since he left.

I know where you're coming from mate, Sammi was a class act BUT lets not forget in his last two seasons we were sh'itting ourselves if the oppo fielded a forward who could run a bit quicker than a pensioner could text the word BINGO !

We could do a lot better than Skrtel, we could also do a lot worse, I think describing him as "abysmal" is a bit harsh.

If we want to play Skrtel and be solid at the back we need to play 3 centre backs with 2 wingbacks. I think Kenny tried it a few times last season and we didn't concede at all. Skrtel is quite ok as a last man 'sweeper'. I was even wondering why Kenny reverted to flat back 4 again...
