Munch is indeed a legend, mate, but I think Pembleton and Bayliss are one of the most interesting (and often hilarious) cop partnerships television has ever produced.  I've also been reading the book on which the series is based (Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon, the guy who was involved in this series and who then went on to create The Wire) and it's a fascinating, gritty look at the inner workings of the Baltimore Homicide unit circa 1988.  Of the many interesting insights he offers, I especially like Simon's ongoing critique of conventional police dramas on tv.  As far as he's concerned, they are all hopelessly fantastical because they tend to solve all murders inside of an hour and usually do so with the kind of slam-dunk evidence real detectives usually only dream of: fingerprints, DNA, multiple eye witnesses, easily recovered murder weapons, fibres and other trace evidence etc.  In reality, he claims, most homicide detectives put their cases down based on the flimsy testimony of maybe one or two reluctant witnesses, which they then use to squeeze a confession out of a suspect in "the box".  In the end, most of these cases never go to trial (insufficient evidence, witnesses backing up on their story, plea bargains...) and those that do are considered by juries who watch too many cop dramas on tv and bring unreasonable expectations to the court about what kind of evidence is required to eliminate reasonable doubt.  Bear in mind he's writing all of this way before the days of CSI and Criminal Minds.  Just imagine what juries are like today! :upside:

Bad Bob wrote:Keep us posted on Game of Thrones, Laz.  I couldn't decide if it looked good or cheesy (or both!).  I'm down to watching only one new show these days: Fringe.  I've not seen anything of Supernatural Season 6 and by all accounts am not missing anything.  I'm also awaiting the DVD release of the latest Dexter to catch up (no spoilers! ).  Instead of contemporary telly we've been working our way through all of the seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street...for all intents and purposes, the precursor to The Wire.  We're almost done season 6 of 7 now and it's been quality stuff.

Been following Game of Thrones Bob, It's not great but it's not bad, might be better viewed in large chunks rather than one episode a week, loads of characters and sometimes difficult keeping track of who's who.

Watched all of Supernatural, it was pretty good but has lost a bit of it's edge. ( The final episode however sets up an interesting start to the next series  :D )

Also been following a show called the Killing, think it's a U.S. remake of an english crime drama, it's pretty slow but I'm so far into it I'm compelled to keep watching to find out "who done it"  :D

Game of Thrones is the best thing on TV now at the moment. Just watched the leaked episode and the sh*t has hit the fan. Khal Drogo went apesh*t declaring to rape and pilage. Should be great. Oh, and Breaking Bad starts back next month. Nice.

Mate, Game of Thrones is a series ready to explode in any moment! the amount of tensions happening in each episode makes me expect that a war will happen in all the region between different families and factions :D

It is fantastic till now, I really like this type of fantasy stuff.

I'm thinking about downloading the Spartacus series. Whoever I ask or where ever I search it's always the same answer "a focking hell of a series". Nobody says it's bad or even Ok, everyone says it's great so I guess it's a must-see. Don't know with which to start first though. Should it be "Gods of the arena" or "Blood and sand"?

Yes, building up very well is Game of Thrones. First series since Lost which has had me actively waiting for the next installment.

Yeee, I'm downloading it for sure :). What I don't know is which one to download first. Blood and Sand came first but the events in Gods of the Arena are a prequel to the events of Blood and Sand. I'll be watching both anyway, so I guess I might start with Gods of the Arena as it is shorter and it's events might come like a warm up for Blood and Sand :).

A friend gave us a  :pirate copy (sorry Daws :D ) of the first half of Season Six and we've been pleasantly surprised.  It's definitely not near the calibre it was back in say season 2 or 3 but it still makes for compelling viewing.  We'll press our connect for the second half of the season and finish it off sharpish.  Then we'll take a look at Game of Thrones...
