ANDY Whitfield, the 39-year-old star of the cable series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died in Sydney.

Manager Sam Maydew said Whitfield died yesterday of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Whitfield's wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife".

Whitfield - who was born in Wales and lived in Australia - was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in Spartacus, a hit original TV series that made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality.

Whitfield was preparing for the second season when he was diagnosed 18 months ago.

Australian actor Liam McIntyre took over the role this year

Saw that in the paper a couple weeks ago. Sad news, Thought he was brilliant in Spartacus. One of the best tv shows I've seen.

Dear Oh Dear, why do TV company's throw all this reality TV rubbish / dumb down TV into our faces. I for one am P1ssed off by all of these reality TV shows. We just don't need them.

Breaking Bad (the best thing ever on TV) has just ended. The Walking Dead series 2 takes its place on Sunday. Not a bad replacement.

Not sure if it's the best thing ever but it's deffo up there with the very best.

Dexter also recently returned along with House, Sons of Anarchy and Supernatural, Yay :buttrock
