Hodgson: I'll not quit Reds
Liverpool boss backs himself to bring back glory days

Roy Hodgson is convinced he is the man to lead Liverpool back to former glories and says he will never walk out on the club.

The 63-year-old heard the Anfield crowd turn on him after Wednesday's defeat to Wolves but in spite of speculation increasing about his future he will never walk away.

The Kop sang the name of Kenny Dalglish and chanted "Hodgson for England" as the team with the worst away record in England came to Anfield and secured a deserved victory in midweek.

Having also upset fans by claiming he had never had the "famous Anfield support" - something which he subsequently apologised for - pressure is building on Reds boss Hodgson but he will not consider quitting.

"It has taken me a long while to get to this elevated position coaching one of the best clubs in Europe," said the former Fulham manager.

"I was very pleased to get the job - I left a very good job to take it - so the last thing in my mind is walking away from a club like this or walking away from football.

"I want to be here, I want to change things, I want to turn it around and I want to help the club and the new owners get the success they want.

"There is no security as a Premier League manager and when you take any job you don't take it for security, you take it because you believe you can do it and do it well.

"No-one gives you security because having the job I have, there are an awful lot of people who would like to be standing where I am today.

"There are a lot of people who believe they can do the job better so that would automatically diminish your security.

"But you believe you can justify the faith of other people who have appointed you."

Despite recent performances having taken a turn for the worse it seems owners New England Sports Ventures are reluctant to effect a change of manager at the current time.

Pleaded

They may be forced to change their stance on that position, of course, if results fail to improve but Hodgson appears to have the time he has pleaded for to get the club on a surer footing.

"I can only beg for the patience and the time we need to do it, especially considering the difficult start we've had," he added.

"I am confident given that time and the competencies I possess and the quality of players we have in the club - with the possibility of maybe adding to that in future transfer windows - this club will once again be up the top there.

"In the past there was a little bit more time and patience but that has diminished over the years.

"If you go back over a longer period there was more patience as people realised it took time to build a team and turn things around.

"Now we - those of us who are working and those who are supporting - want the change to come very quickly.

"I know with the right amount of time and patience and with a little bit of luck we will get back to where we should be.

"We are not there at the moment and we have to keep working towards it."

Hodgson admits the criticism he has received is painful but pointed out he has been in many difficult situations before and will ride out the storm in search of a brighter future.

"Of course it hurts, The day when it becomes water of a duck's back is the day you don't do the job," he said.

"Strangely enough, two or three weeks ago everything was looking very bright and people were being very positive.

"Suddenly after a defeat at Newcastle and a very bad defeat at home to Wolves things have swung round enormously.

"Let's not make everything ridiculously doomy and gloomy because we lost a game.

"We are not in a crisis situation but on Wednesday we let ourselves down very badly and we have to bounce back and give a totally different performance against Bolton."

Nope I have a feeling something is imminent though

Was there not a press conference scheduled today ? Just saw a transcript of an interview with him on Sly Sports....the man is so out of touch it's not funny...

Yes he give that interview at 9am this morning as someone pointed out earlier in this thread He(Woy) was probably told to apologise to the fans by the owners.

It's only a matter of time now before he goes, I wouldn't be surprised if there putting a compensation package together for him

I don't agree and suspect that the board forced the statement by Hodgson today. A win tomorrow plus a good result at Ewood Park and the current crisis will be a thing of the past. Having said that if Liverpool remain in the bottom half of the table I doubt that Hodgson will be in charge by the time the Europa League resumes.

I don't like witchunts and think that Roy has always had the club's best intentions at his heart during his time in charge. The simple truth is though that he's an outsider and has been shown up in recent days and by backtracking on his comments has virtually left the way open for his departure by the end of the season whatever happens on the pitch. Roy lad walk now while you still can give yourself a dignified exit at least then you can hold your head up high. The longer you carry on with these kind of results and performances the more damage you are doing yourself and your own reputation.

Well said !!
What's  happening now is rather distasteful.
I said some time ago that I feared for Roy's health and I still do.
He has taken too much on , but you can't blame him for grasping the opportunity.
I wish him no ill will , but feel his best course of action would be to resign.

1. He was doomed before he started due to the "being out of his depth" theory
2. He was badly advised or not advised at all in the culture of LFC fans
3. Every single utterance would be used against him by those with a pro-Rafa/anti-Roy agenda
4. The players take little or no responsibility due to them being sh'ithouses
5. His signings have been questionable to say the least but I still dont know if Poulsen can cut it and Miereles is a good player
6. Statistics can be used to prove anything and although I agree the table doesnt lie, the reason we are were we are cannot just be down to Hodgson. There are a whole host of reasons and extenuating circumstances, some out of his control, which have led to the situation were in.
The fact that he is not being given any money speaks volumes for the future.
By the way, was such a detailed dossier compiled for Benitez? If so, it is no wonder he is no longer with us

So did you add your own John Hancock  ? :D

Roy Hodgson's days at Liverpool numbered as owners plan for life without him
By Dominic King
Last updated at 11:09 AM on 1st January 2011

Liverpool's owners are actively examining candidates to replace Roy Hodgson and will be prepared to move when the right man becomes available.
Fenway Sports Group have reached breaking point with the current manager after a series of poor results and performances culminated in Wednesday’s woeful 1-0 home defeat by Wolves, a result which leaves Liverpool three points off the relegation zone.

Hodgson, who yesterday issued a grovelling apology following comments he made after that game about Liverpool’s support, is now effectively a dead man walking, as FSG are running the rule over young coaches who will be able to take Liverpool into a new era.

An online petition asking FSG principal John W Henry to sack Hodgson had more than 12,000 signatures last night, while the respected website Red And White Kop also published an open letter to Henry pleading for Hodgson’s removal.

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps, Andre Villas-Boas of Porto, Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp and Bolton’s Owen Coyle, who takes his side to Anfield today, will all be considered.

Deschamps was a candidate to replace Rafa Benitez last summer and he made what insiders described at the time as a ‘fantastic’ impression when he met with
Liverpool officials.

A proven track record of success wherever Deschamps has been — not to mention experience of the Barclays Premier League from his time with Chelsea as a player — would appeal to FSG.

Deschamps is also familiar with working under a director of football strategy — in this case Damien Comolli, who was appointed by FSG in November.

Liverpool's owners seek replacement for Roy Hodgson
As the manager expressed his hurt and loneliness in the club's predicament his masters were searching for a successor

The Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson, says it has been an 'uphill struggle' at Anfield.
Roy Hodgson became manager of Liverpool 183 days ago. On the day he got the job he said: 'I always knew Liverpool fans were special. The motto "You'll never walk alone" is really lived by the fans. It's a club where you feel you're not alone.' Today those words came back to haunt him.

Roy Hodgson's days at Liverpool appear to be numbered after it emerged last night the club's American owners are ready to replace him midway through the season, if the right candidate becomes available.

As the manager made an emotional plea to fans to get behind him and apologised for his perceived criticism of them after Wednesday's defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fenway Sports Group, which bought the club in October, had reportedly decided to start looking for his successor after six months at the helm. The former Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has been linked with the job, as have Didier Deschamps, Porto's André Villas Boas and Bolton's Owen Coyle.

While one poll suggested that more than nine in 10 Liverpool fans wanted Hodgson sacked, the manager yesterday gave vent to his feelings.

"After the defeat by Wolves I thought I did quite a good job to disguise the hurt, the sadness and, to some extent, the anger that I was feeling. To take stick from the crowd and then to stand up in a press conference and say I understood and sympathised with them ... It is always going to be the case as a manager that when things are going wrong you are going to get that flak, that stick. It is unfortunate for me that fans should think I went into a press conference with a view to attacking them because nothing could be further from the truth.

"Two or three weeks ago we were on a good roll and playing some good football and everything looked so bright and positive. A very good performance at Tottenham, which should have encouraged people, has now become just another defeat. Then we had the last two defeats, against Newcastle and Wolves, which have hurt us very badly and hurt me very badly. It has swung things round enormously and put us in the situation where we find ourselves today. I cannot emphasise enough that it hurts me deeply. It hurts my professional pride. It hurts all the things I believe in to find myself in the situation I am in but I have to accept it. I feel very bad and very down.

"I have the experience but it has been an uphill struggle since I came here. Maybe that was the point I was trying to make [about the famous Anfield support] which has been interpreted as a crack against the fans. I have had a lot of situations to deal with and worked very hard to put together a team that knows what it is doing and can produce winning football. Along the way there have been some very big setbacks which have thrown me into the limelight and the firing line. I accept it as part of taking a job of this stature.

"Last night I saw a quote from Benjamin Disraeli when he became prime minster: 'I have achieved my goal and climbed to the top of the greasy pole.' That is really what we do. That is how I feel. Coming to Liverpool for me was a pinnacle; to some extent it was a reward for the work I had put in, not just at Fulham but in the years before. It was a recognition of my competence. You come here hoping you will keep flying forward but, yes, I did know it would be difficult. If we can between now and the end of the season get the results everybody wants, people will respect us more for the hardship we have gone through. It is a cliché but we coaches do need time, patience and support. Support at this club is of vital importance because that is what has made it great through the years – the feeling that Liverpool is a bit special and that people get together when things are not going well.

"It would be nice to have people around you who could help you a bit more but it doesn't really work that way. It is a lonely job being the manager of a top club. You can't expect people to help you too much. The staff are very good and supportive – and so too are the players – but your family is the most important during these times. They try to encourage you that life isn't all doom and gloom and there might be a bright spot somewhere along the way. That is what you have to cling on to.

"Two defeats in a row – and one of them at home against a team you are expected to beat – that is a time when you are going to be very hurt and upset about everything. Lonely is not the wrong word to use because, to be quite honest, you don't want company anyway. You want to be left alone with your thoughts. They are not pleasant thoughts but you don't have the desire to do anything other than sit around with them."

Sorry but there exists little sympathy in football ,when you continually undermine the fans and the Club, simply by your continued presence.....
Your not good enough for these fans ,any man worth his salt would walk away with his dignity ,you cant even do that you arrogant old fool
No you would rather continually subject us to your excuses for being a pathetic failure ...and you do so with a sneering arrogance
Go before you are  as despised as the owners that went before you ..... I hope the club opt for a young manager with fresh ideas and a strong belief in attacking fluent football .... anything that will arouse us from the coma you have left us in ...induced by the turgid unbalanced football we have been forced to endure
