Wingers... - Something that needs to be addressed

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Benayoun was a decent player but he was never a winger. He used to cut inside an awful lot and would seldom pull wide and crossing the ball most certainly wasn't his strength. He played more between the lines where he could use his "jinkyness" to good effect. Riera on the other hand was a classic LW, not great by any means (no real outstanding attributes) but generally a solid player in possession, with good physical strength and aerial ability...a major improvement on Babel or for that matter Maxi.

The one winger I would approve of us signing now is Adam Johnson. I think he's better than a lot of the others mentioned here, except Bale and possibly Sanchez (never seen him play), but including Lennon, SWP and Ashley Young who aren't well-rounded enough for my liking (though to some extent an improvement on what we already have). Ashley Young would be decent at the right price and/or if we had a target man to get on the end of his crosses and set-piece deliveries, but we don't have such a player (Llorente would be good).

the thing is, joe cole can excel in a front three but never as an orthodox wide man in a 4-4-2. as i said earlier his ideal position would be as a classic number 10 but he's never really earned the right to play there.

as it stands we still desperately need a top quality left side attacker. jovanovis isn't going to make it and as for babel, he's already proved this season that he's better upfront through the middle.

That is why we get cheap hard working Kuyt type style of players who can't dribble even if their life depended on it....

Which is half the reason why we never quite made it to the next level. We may have threatened to in 08/09 but had Rafa been backed to buy the first choice players that he wanted then we'd have Simao and Malouda at the Football Club now. He also wanted Milner when he was leaving Newcastle and we were also interested in Bale and Walcott. If reports are to believd, we missed out on Walcott because Parry in his infinite wisdom wouldn't pay an extra £500k that Southampton wanted. And don't even get me started on Daniel Alves who our board considered "too expensive" at £12m or David Silva a couple of seasons back.

That's what happens when you don't get fully backed. You end up with second or even third choice players. Riera and Pennant for example who probably had six decent months each before disappearing into oblivion.

:nod

Alves got sold later to Barcalona for 25 million. We could even have made money on him  :veryangry

I would loved to have seen what rafa could have done had he been properly backed.

There is talk of us being interested in taking SWP on loan from City. If he could consistently find his best form (a couple of years back now) then it might be a short term answer. He was at his best when he was playing week in week out though and he hasn't done that for some time.

i'm not convinced by SWP either...he falls into the Walcot bracket for me, in the sense that he was hyped up as a kid and failed to produce the goods as his career progressed.

There's a reason he struggles to get into the Man City 1st 11...and it's the same reason he couldn't get a regular start at Chelsea. He's not good enough.

I thnk martin kelly has proved himself in th rb role.
That means we can look to spend elsewhere.

Spot on mate. Would love to see GJ in a more advanced role for us. Kelly is a more than able replacement at RB and is a better defender than Johnson.

Would be a good loan move IMO with the possibility, if things go well, for a permanent move in the summer.

Eden Hazard, Arda Turan, Alexis Sanchez, Ashley Young, Xherdan Shaqiri, Krasic, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Id be happy with any of them. I thnk Tura, Young and shaqiri r on a freebie in the summer.

Personally id get Hazard, Turan, Shaqiri and Chambelain. The owners said the spends would be available if the players fitted in with thier plans 4 the future so why not test thier word. I thik its very realistic as 2 of them r free and if we sold afew dead wood as well as the money we r suppose 2 have left over from the summer gone, the other 2 wouldnt need us breaking the bank. Over 2 u Woy.

Eden Hazard is going to be the hottest property in football this summer so unfortunately I think that rules us out of signing him unless he fancies plying his trade in the Europa league for at least a year.

We sure try to bark like the big dogs but when it's time to play the club runs away with the tail between their legs.

When you cheap out and get Pennant for 7 and Benayun for 5 instead of Alves for 12 and Simao for 11 then you also get what you deserve.

No, we were never interested in Adam Johnson in the first place, has nothing to do with funds.

i agree arsenal will most likely be his destination.
shame though cos i reckon he would be a great player for us and i would love to see comoli throw a spanner in the works and tempt him here.

and win feck all  :D

Wenger's gone stale at Arsenal and, despite their result today, won't win anything with him in charge.

I see we are linked with Ben Arfa today and may look to pip Newcastle to his signature. From what I have seen of him at Newcastle he is a very good player with pace to burn - yes please.:)

This was the biggest issue to come out of last night for me. It was embarassing at times. We've probably got the most ineffectual wide men in the entire league and that's saying something. As an attacking force Kuyt and Maxi offered nothing. All the width came from the fullbacks who I thought both had good games, Kelly especially who is progressing very nicely and is definitely a future England international.

We definitely need one, maybe two out and out wide players.
