Glen Johnson slams Hodgson's 'boring' tactics and wants to leave Liverpool

By Joe Bernstein

England international Glen Johnson wants to leave Liverpool in January after a total breakdown in his relationship with manager Roy Hodgson.

The right-back is said to be outraged by the way Hodgson is alleged to have handled his injury problems this season and the public criticism he received from his manager on Friday.

The player's representatives will meet new director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, this week to make it clear the £18million England man has no faith left in Hodgson's 'boring' style of play.

Johnson's team will also claim the boss rushed the defender back from a groin injury, leading to further setbacks.

'Things have moved rapidly downhill for Glen since Roy arrived,' said a source. 'He finds the style of football boring and the way he was criticised by the manager in public was uncalled for. He was made to train too soon with a groin injury and it's kept him out for longer than it should have done.'

Johnson, signed by Liverpool's former boss, Rafa Benitez, is prepared to quit English football to end his association with Hodgson. Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation, but if Liverpool progress from the Europa League he would not be able to play for the German giants in this season's Champions League.

Johnson missed four games in October with a groin injury but was picked by Hodgson for the Europa League win over Napoli on November 4.

However, the problem has recurred, causing him to miss Liverpool's past three games and ruling him out of England's friendly against France on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old, hailed as the missing piece in Liverpool's title jigsaw when he arrived from Portsmouth last year, is believed to be furious at the way Hodgson rounded on him in a press conference on Friday.

It is unusual for managers to criticise their players so directly but Hodgson pulled no punches as he said: 'To be frank, he has not performed up to now to the level I would expect of him. You would have to ask him the question, "Do you think you are playing at top form and are you playing like the best right-back in the country for your club?" If he says yes, we will have to agree to differ. And if he says No, then you have to ask the question, why not?'

The fall-out with Johnson marks the start of a critical period for Hodgson, with Comolli ready to take on a more front-line role in player recruitment after being appointed by Liverpool's new owner, John W Henry, of New England Sports Ventures. Comolli is to host meetings with agents this week and also plans to publicly outline his role at the club.

So if your saying that then,
Ive copied this from somwere else ,btw

Rafa got castigated last season for having a go at 'senior' players last season, in particular, after we lost to Villa at home. In fact many perceive that point in time when he lost Gerrard and Carra and it went all downhill from there.

In addition Rafa was vilified for his lack of man management skills.... well even if Hodgson is right on this, hardly constitutes being an arm around the shoulder.

If he's displeased with Johnson why not have a quiet word in his shell like? What benefit is it in slagging the lad in the press?

Again, why the interpretation that he "slagged the lad"? He said Glen wasn't playing at the top of his game and the implication was that he need to pull his socks up. I suppose if you had heard Roy say that in a press conference rather than through Tony Barrett, you probably wouldn't think much, if anything, of the comments in question. The article prepares you to buy into his interpretation of the quotes that follow.

On Ciggy's post. I suppose if we're going to be consistent we would doubt the veracity of the "source", and second if we did decide to believe it, we would focus our anger on Johnson for airing his dirty washing in public. We have precedent here: Benayoun and Albert Riera were highly critical of Rafa's man-management approach and both aired their views in public. Back then, people leapt to Rafa's defence and slagged Benayoun and Riera to buggery. Wonder whose side they'll be on this time?

Unbelieveable! Don't get me wrong I think Kelly has a great future ahead of him but we need 2 RB's. We can't keep playing Carra there now and again, we need Johnson firing on all cylinders.

So Roy tries to motivate the lad and now he wants to leave. For gods sake he needs to pack up and get out himself before he does any more damage, the man has lost the plot.

Well this isn't good if that rumor of him wanting out is true.  Johnson>Arbeloa>Kelly unfortunate to hear this news.  There aren't many great RBs in the world and Johnson is one of them imo, oh well I guess we'll see what happens.

I actually think Finnan & Arbeloa where better defenders than Glo Jo, and against better teams these type of defenders are needed against dross ten men behind the ball teams you need Johnson, the only problem now is we have become one of them ten men behind the ball ale house team so his services are no longer required.
He doesnt fit into Roys flat back four hoof it anywhere tactics.

Why wasnt Carra dropped yesterday for kelly?
He can fuck off with Roy calling our away fans fuckin pr!cks after the game yesterday paying their hard earned money, travelling up and down the country in sh!te weather, to sh!te grounds, to watch that sh!te, to get that said to them from the scouse Guardiola  :glare:

That contract on Purslow watch the day before NESV is very fishy indeed !!!

I think Johnson was needed and brought by Rafa to help us break down the teams that sit and defend, so he could offer us width and to be a bit more dynamic in attack. Against the likes of Chelsea and Man U,  Arbeloa and Finnan would fair better because you need a defensive mindset to be in tune with the game a little more than an attacking one.

Rafa Rafa Rafa!

Hodgson hasnt really balsted him nan. He's said he aint playing  to a certain level that even him should acknowledge he shub be playing to. Redknapp did it recently with Crouch. Houllier with Carew, Mancini with Johnson.

can you not see that most managers do it. the preesss spit it out and only use part of the quotes, to dramatise it.
