That's not really the issue. I think Gerrard is a better right midfielder than Kuyt but it doesn't mean you play him there, he's probably a better right back than Johnson too.

For the balance of the team though, Gerrard must play in midfield IMHO.

yep, agreed. Gerrard back in the engine room.

BOOOOOOOOOOO

nah I dont think they will

Wanna bet,
And he will see the funny side an all , ill bet you half a larger there are booooos at Anfield on Sunday

Yes the gooners are known for their empathy! When Gerrard stuck that opening goal in, I bet their wasn't an English fan not saying "here we go". Of course the inadequacies of Capellos team will lie firmly at his feet in the gooners eyes. Especially with the massive contribution Wenger's men had!

Im not talking about Booing come from the Arsenal fans mate im talking about our own fans , They will do it as a micky take after what he said about Booing,

Just watch and listen if Stevie scores youll hear BOOOOOOOOOO, and ill guarentee you he wil smile .

Remember the beach ball , we twisted it and brought out loads of beach balls the next game, we have twisted things quite a few times to stop others doing it and thinking there clever, Stevie will know

chatting utter $hit

IMHO

It's his best position generally (I'm not saying he isn't very good in the hole or on the right), and more importantly it's his best position for the current team, since a) He's the only player who over the course of the season has enough all-round ability to make the midfield balance, b) Cole plays in the hole very, very well. He has a level of subtelty, skill and vision that is obviously suited to that role. For the benefit of the team, Gerrard has to play in the midfield. He hasn't done it often enough over the past 6 seasons for my liking.

Correct.

He has to play in midfield. Not because he hasn't excelled as a second striker or as a RM, which he has, but because the team needs him there.

Because with Maschernano and Gerrard you have a top midfield. With Povlsen and Gerrard you have a top midfield. But with Mascherano and Lucas you have a CM that doesn't make the team tick, and thus the second striker won't be as effective.

The team needs Gerrard back in the middle. Lucas is not good enough. Of course he does things well, sometimes even decent or good games. The Brum CM or the Wigan CM whoever they are could do that aswell. But to play in Liverpool regularly you have to be better than a Brum CM or Wigan CM. And Lucas isn't better than that.

Gerrard can play whatever he wants, he's shown as world class players in 3 positions. But if you're going to play him behind the striker make sure the team behind him is working. And if it's not working put Gerrard there to fix it, first things first.

Brilliant football post.

agree, think the last paragraph of sabre's post is spot on.

Not saying the rest isnt by the way, just that the last part is where i think is most accurate.

In a nutshell.

I'll second that sabes. The guy is immense there. We could really over run their midfield sunday. What worries me is Ngog up front. He'll waste too many opportunities

Every now and then as we all talk b0ll0cks, someone absolutely nails it, bullseye, bang on the money. Sabre's post is such an example.

Thought his second against Hungary midweek was outstanding, world class even. Not sure if there's a video of it but it's well worth a look if you haven't seen it. His first wasn't bad, either.

Just wondering whats the final verdict in here on where Gerrard should/shouldn't play especially with Cole now out for 3 games?

Should we continue to deploy in central midfield allowing him to gradually fully acclimatise to the position again making use of his all round attributes like his range of passing, crunching tackles along with his usual forward bursts?

Or should we move further up again in the more free roaming attacking role where he struck up such a good and deadly understanding with  Torres in recent yearsallowing Aquilani to drop into centre mid and run the show behind him?

I'd like him to be alongside Masch and play Aquaman in the hole while Cole is out.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but it is to do with Gerrard and it is a bit of a quandary of mine. I was always in the 'in Rafa we trust' brigade and used to defend him to the hilt in debates with friends and family. When they first brought Roy in I was a little shocked. I have always liked the guy but did not think he was Liverpool material (he's proving me wrong).
I'm pretty shocked to learn that obviously, Gerrard and a few of the rest of the squad also wanted Rafa out because his performances this season (okay, the haven't been many), have gone back up to the level he was at a couple of years ago. I just find it a little difficult to accept that we finished as far down as 7th to get rid of the manager.
As for the present topic, I think we should try AA in the hole for the next game and leave Gerrard in the middle.
