It was Benitez from last season approaching Cole to come... Combined with the evil plan of Purslows to run the club down financially and football wise by signing a risky player on huge wages ..

You see Mick, my take on it (and you gotta respect my opinion and all that remember) is that with Rafa gone, we have no one to fight for us inside the club... You have a manager who doesnt mind bringing in risky overpaid players like Joe Cole while letting talent like Insua go away for peanuts (5mill is nothing money but a free is not a free you see, its actually 19mill in disguise)... We also have a director of football whose sole purpose in life is to sign sht players for us and sell our best players (SOON, YOU WAIT AND SEE!!) ..

What a difference one signing can make.

Two days ago we were bemoaning being linked with the likes of Beattie, and now we effectively get £6m plus Joe Cole for Bennayoun.  If that isn't the deal of the summer I'll plait $hit.

Joe Cole is a player that any of the top teams in the EPL and beyond would like in their squad, and it is a massive boost both to the squad and perhaps more importantly to the morale of all concerned, not least the fans.

A great start for Roy, and the squad is all of sudden looking better, with Jovanovic and Shelvey on board, I am suddenly more excited about the new season.

Even more so when we get the funds from the sales of Masch, possibly Babel and Riera too.

If we use that wisely to secure three or four quality players, and cross our fingers that Aqualani is like a new signing for us too then we could fare much better than we all feared after last season.

As to who signed him....well the finances not suprisingly would have been handled by the men trying to balance our very unbalanced books.  It would amaze me if Roy did not convince Cole to come, and of course identify him as a target.

Top signing, top player and everything is looking better all of a sudden.

Whatever he is getting paid, it won't be much different than Bennayoun's wages plus his transfer fee (£6m) over the 4 year contract.

Plus Cole is simply a better player.

I am struggling to see how this signing can be a negative?

Would I have sold Insua....well we don't know what plans if any there are for a replacement, but assuming there isn't one then probably not.  However, I don't see signing a replacement as a big issue, and Insua had some way to go to be the real deal.

Clearly better than Benayoun, what's with the moaning and negativity?

The negative ones on here are almost as destructive as the owners, makes me sick.

So now people who are a bit unsure still with everything are as bad as the owners ?! what ever next .

Yeah you are to an extent. Your attitude is cancerous, you breed negativity.

actually totally agree with nans post - a couple back.

We are meant to be trying to stop this big divide and tbh mick and ace while i sort of agree with what you are saying, if we want to try and enjoy this place again there's probably no need for any of this.

We are all (except benny  :D ) made up with the signing, lets just enjoy it and not care why or who signed him eh. :)

Benny, you have to do a better job of controlling your responses.  You can't give a reply to every single post that differs from your opinion or else everyone will do the same to you.

Don't worry - I have had enough and out of here - the people who spend the most time preaching about arguments and all that f.ucking bullsh.it and wanting it to stop are a main problem of it all in the first place and don't realise it . Your unable to have an opinion on here that goes against certain posters opinion and if you do post that opinion you get insulted and abused - it's not worth it at the end of the day - some of the guys on here are the biggest :censored: on a forum and m . I enjoy football debate but a debate is only good when both sides are treated with respect .

For the record I think this could be a key signing for us. Although he missed a majority of last season, I am  not totally sure but it was just one long injury was it not? his knee? and not a number of them. So in one way we can hope the worst is behind him, as with torres and aquilani....thats a lot of hoping !

Anyway im happy with the signing.  :D

When I switched on Sky Sports News today and saw the headline running along the bottom of the screen that Joe Cole had signed for Liverpool, I was absolutely delighted. At last we have signed a big name quality player. The squad still isn't as strong as the top 5 teams, but it's a promising sign.

I'm a little shocked though. I was convinced he would sign for Spurs or Arsenal. Why did he pick us over a team playing in the Champions League, I wonder? Definitely not complaining, though.
