THREE Reds fans were stabbed and three more were injured as trouble flared ahead of Liverpool FC’s clash with Napoli.

A group of men aged 27, 44 and 53 were attacked at knifepoint in the old part of the city last night after supporters were met with a hostile reception whipped up by the Italian press.

The 27-year-old and 53-year-old were today in hospital but their condition was not thought to be life-threatening.

In a second incident, a woman and two men were targeted, but not seriously hurt.

The attacks came after an article printed in the newspaper Il Mattino Napoli branded Liverpool fans as hooligans.

A report yesterday had the headline: “Naples, the arrival of Liverpool and hooligans. Police: Stop sales of alcohol.”

The report read: “Naples will host Liverpool in tomorrow night’s Europa League, and the city expects around 1,000 hooligans from one of the most violent fringes of English football supporters.

“In a red letter day for security in the city, extraordinary security measures are to be put in place.

“No beer, alcohol or other spirits will be on sale in bars and shops in the run-up to the game.”

A foreign office spokesperson said: “We can confirm the hospitalisation of two British nationals in Naples, Italy, on October 20. We are providing consular assistance.”

Merseyside police’s contingent commander Chief Superintendent Dave Lewis, in the historic city as a liaison officer, said the attack was thought to be a random incident.

But online fans reported gangs of up to 30 Italians, some on scooters, targeting Reds supporters.

Others gave accounts of Italian police escorts for fans to their hotels.

Reports from local police also suggested Italian authorities had dealt with two incidents in which bottles were launched at Liverpool fans.

A Merseyside police spokesperson said the force would work with the Italian police to advise fans if they were at risk.

Ironic how they print an article about Liverpool hooligans... then they go around in gangs stabbing and attacking people.

Disgraceful news. :(

How its been reported in Oz press

Two Liverpool fans were admitted to hospital after being attacked by a group of 10 youths wielding clubs and at least one knife in Naples.

The attack happened in the early hours of Thursday morning ahead of the Europa League clash between Liverpool and Napoli scheduled for Thursday night.

In a separate attack a 28-year-old Italian was injured trying to protect some Liverpool fans, clients in his bar, from another attack.

The two Liverpool fans taken to hospital were named as 44-year-old Lee Friar, a prison guard, and 53-year-old Alexander Phillips.

Friar suffered a head injury but has already been discharged from the Loreto Mare hospital while Phillips was stabbed in the thigh and still needs treatment, according to reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The third victim on the night was Luigi Tranchese who suffered an injury to his eye after trying to calm a group of thugs that wanted to attack a group of Liverpool fans in his bar.

They then ran off as police were called.

Police have opened an inquiry into the incidents but tensions are said to be high in the city.

A sell-out crowd of 60,000 people is expected for the game

A total of six Liverpool fans were injured on Wednesday night ahead of the Europa League tie in the city.

Liverpool are due to play Napoli at the team's San Paolo stadium on Thursday evening.

Merseyside Police said a total of six Liverpool fans were assaulted in the Italian city on Wednesday night.

Two men, aged 27 and 53, were taken to hospital with stab wounds. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, a police spokesman said.

The BBC's correspondent in Rome, Duncan Kennedy, said doctors had told him the 53-year-old, Alexander Phillips, was due to be released later.  The Foreign Office said he was from Liverpool.

The 27-year-old man, who has asked not to be named, is expected to remain in hospital for observation.

It is understood 10 Italian youths with sticks and at least one knife were involved in the attack.

There are also reports of a family of four being injured. It is not clear whether they are included in the group of six fans Merseyside Police have been made aware of.

Naples police said three people had been arrested over that incident.

The stabbing that the Italians notoriously do, is a stab wound to the buttocks. It apparently is done to exact to the most discomfort and embarrassment without killing. The practice is frequent even among rival Italian fans.

apparently the team is as follows:

Reina
Kelly
Carragher
Soto
Konchesky
Spearing
Poulson
Shelvey
Jovanovic
Babel
Ngog

creativity wise, that central midfield pairing makes me long for the days of mascherano and lucas. :Oo:

i presume he'd be the furthest forward in a midfield 3. looks like a 4-3-3 to me.

The latest fro The Liverpool Echo

TALIAN police today urged Liverpool supporters to follow their strict safety procedures after admitting Napoli's ultras are targeting visiting fans in random attacks.

Two English Liverpool supporters were stabbed in Naples' old town last night and another three were wounded, leading police to call a lunchtime press conference.

Three arrests have already been made in connection with the attacks that left Gary Brown, from Bedfordshire, and his two sons Daniel, 23, and Adam, 17, needing hospital treatment.

Ross Hazeldene, 23, was also with the group when the attacks took place but Italian police said they have since been discharged.

Apart from the three arrests, the police seized a number of weapons, including six-foot planks of wood with protruding screws, a baseball bat, knuckle dusters and iron bars.

It has prompted Neapolitan officials to implore those Reds' fans who have made the trip here to stick to certain designated areas near the port before kick-off at Estadio San Paulo.

Police have said there is a strong possibility of attacks in the build up to the game and are making as many precautions as they can to keep Liverpool fans' safe.

Filippo Bonfiligo, head of Digos – the Italian anti-terror unit – said: “The city is so great (vast) that it is impossible to prevent everything occurring.

“We will be searching everyone going in to the stadium but (visiting) supporters are obliged to follow the special route to the stadium. That area will be safe.

“We hope that the English supporters coming here will follow the strict meeting points so they can be escorted safely to the stadium.”

He added: “We know groups of 'Ultras' are seeking English fans.

"There have been investigations into the violence that has taken place and we have made three arrests.”

T'S a glorious day here in Naples.

The sun is shining brightly, the temperature is as far removed from icy blasts back home and the weather is inviting you to go for a walk.

Usually when you jet out for a European away game, there comes a chance to utilise a spare hour before kick-off to explore the little nooks and crannies of the city which you are visiting.

We could have done that today.

After all, Naples is like nowhere else in Italy, a vibrant, noisy, bustling sprawl that has terrific energy and culture.

The people, too, are keen to extend a warm welcome; taxi drivers are engaging company as they slalom their way around the chaotic roads and workers in bars and hotels are just as hospitable.

Yet, unfortunately, there is a sinister undertone, one which means nobody on Liverpool's travelling party is too keen on venturing far from the hotel.
Last night a group of colleagues found themselves confronted by a gang of intimidating, scowling Ultras – the 'fans' who love engaging in chaos and violence.

Fortunately, the situation was defused and no harm was done but, listening to the story that was relayed this morning, one wrong move could have led to the scene erupting.

It seems as if every Italian club has such a group and Napoli's ultras are understood to be among the most notorious in this country.

Having attended a police press conference at lunchtime, it's easy to decipher the authorities are expecting Napoli's ultras to live up to their reputation this evening.

Liverpool supporters  - around 1,200 are thought to have travelled out here - have been advised not to stray away from the designated holding zones beforehand or take unconventional routes to the ground.

Clearly, it should not be like this. Foreign jaunts are supposed to be the most enjoyable on which fans can embark, not the nightmares that some Reds experienced last night.

This is not to tar everyone in Naples with the same brush. Far from it. But, occasionally, you see a the ugly face of the beautiful game and this is one such experience.

Quite simply, it doesn't really matter what happens on the pitch tonight. All that matters is everyone returns home safe and sound.

Speaking from Personal experience  I think Napoli is a seedy little place ,and it has a nasty reputation for tourists being attacked ...I genuinely feel for the supporters out there this evening ,I have a bad feeling about this match tonight and I dont mean the score
The Ultras are bad b@ stards but they are well organised  bad b@ stards who operate under a type of military precision  .... truly scary
Fuckers and I also speak from personal experience when I say they hate  Scousers with a passion ....
Genuinely worried about the the travelling fans out there  :(

I hope no Liverpool fan has made arrangements to meet with Napoli fans via this or any other forum.  It could be a trap.
