The Fulham captain, 32, spent seven successful seasons at Anfield and was a key part of the side that won a famous 'Treble' in 2001.

He was shown the door by Benitez soon after the Spaniard's arrival and six years later is on course to face his old club in the Europa League final.

Benitez has spent £229million on players and while Chelsea and Manchester City have spent more, Murphy believes it should have been enough.

He explained: "They've certainly had enough money in summers gone by and have had some good players. You can analyse it all you like but the expectation is to be successful - and that's not happened.

"I'm as disappointed as anybody at the way they are doing at the moment. I want to see them do well but they've been struggling.

"The simple fact is that the last few years have not been up to the standards Liverpool expect - and Rafa set those himself in his first year by winning the Champions League.

"I think the turnaround of players has been a little bit too high.

"They have had some good players there like Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane.

"Then, this year, Fernando Torres was injured and they are struggling for a striker. They have had players who were capable of filling in there."

Sour grapes, Danny? The f*ck's he know about running a football club, anyway? Should keep his gob shut. Didn't deserve that ovation he got either.

and you think HES bitter?

Hes making perfect sense if you ask me

Yep, I think he's bitter. He obviously wanted to stay and got shown the door.

Xabi Alonso, or Danny Murphy? Hmmm, tough question that. Again, if you aren't prepared to sit on the bench at a club like Liverpool, you're either nuts or a w@nker anyway. Danny Murphy was a decent player for us, but hardly the class of player we needed for our midfield. He got the jing, seen us lifting Big Ears the same year, and has had the hump ever since. I know I would.

I really don't understand this love in for Benitez. He's JUST a manager, that's all. He's not even that good a manger. Some people on here go on about him as if he invented LFC or something. It's amazing.

Just the manager? Since Shanks the fans have always held the manager close to their heart. You only have to look on the Kop to see them on the banners. And the way you speak of him is as if he never won the European Cup. He deserves respect.

Rafa deserves Respect but he also deserves a farewell ,At the end of the day he is a member of the Liverpool Family ,perhaps a high ranking member ,but he isn't bigger then then club then fans the past and the future ,he is completing a 5 years term which is long enough to detarmine if he deserves an extension.

In my opinion he doesn't ,he has lost the plot alltogether ,he is running on autopilot, lousy money manager ,lousy scouter ,lousy player manager ,brings no emotion no passion just cold robotic agenda.

The players look deplated ,confused and frankly don't enjoy the game ,if this is the spirit you wish to have for the coming years go ahead keep Rafa ,for me his respected term is over.

What's unbelievable that you and others think that we had a good game against a team that parks the bus inside the 18 and has 2 shots....

Maybe we should keep Rafa for Europe games only and bring another one for the EPL ,this disgrace can't continue and he is whining on future plans and purchases...

Because you'd have to be a clueless gobsh*te to say that it wasn't a decent performance. We were all over the kunts for 90 minutes. It happens. Dry your f*ckin eyes!

Yep i'm gobsh*te and yet we still couldn't produce more then 2 chances against a team which came with half it's squad and didn't even try countattacking...And you call it a "Decent" Performance ,this kinda of "understanding" would keep Rafa and his disgusting tactics for ages.

Open your eyes you probably only listened to the game.

Stop gurning, will ye. Those of us with brains knew fourth went out the window ages ago.

You crack me up ,you with the brain....You know Rafa has very large brain...maybe thats why we are so successful.

You have no idea and i'm not even sure what and who you are protecting here ,I care for Liverpool's future.

Thats funny. Id think any real footballer would want to be playing football week in, week out, not just sitting on the bench watching the team.

Murphy was a total proffessional for us, scored some great goals and always gave his all. Personally I think he deserves a bit more respect than what people like you are giving him.

I agree Daws. For a player who was Liverpool through and through, a good pro and a trier to be talked about the way he is sometimes isn't really on. I remember him getting the winner against the Mancs on seemingly an annual basis, and I remain absolutely convinced that while he was no Xabi Alonso, he would have been a far better bet than Lucas over these last few seasons.

Often the very people who berate others for not showing enough "respect" are the ones who will instantly turn on anyone who says or does anything which doesn't fit into their mantra. Any player who dares to step out of line, however crazy and meandering that line is, becomes instantly a c...

It's high time people left their personal grievances out of things and simply looked at facts. Here we are after six seasons of Rafa in charge and we are struggling to finish in the top six. I'm amazed that anybody needs to go any further. the more they claim to love the club the more they are prepared to put up with mediocrity. It's all very odd.

Whats the beef about Danny Murphy ffs?

He was always decent for us and he has excelled at Fulham as well. The fans showed very good respect for him this afternoon and obviously recognised what he did when he was here.

I dont think Murphy's said anything wrong to be perfectly honest. Thats his assessment of the situation at Liverpool and that's fair enough. Call it sour grapes but IMO what he's said is a fact and saying he's bitter is just a way of diverting away from the facts
