LIVERPOOL v DEBRECENI VSC - 19:45 wed 16th september cl group phase

Liverpool Football Club - Games

Not one for the ages but job done, I suppose.  We looked to be playing very much within ourselves tonight.  Saving it up for WHU hopefully?  Torres desperately needs some proper service or he'll continue to be passenger--which I don't think is great for his mental state.  It didn't look like anybody was too fussed to bring their shooting boots tonight, though.  Thankfully Dirk managed to stab it home when the keeper put it on a plate.  Oh, and I was pleased to see Babel looking a.rsed and a bit of a handful down the right.  We should have had a second when he stole that ball and fed Torres.  Unfortunately, we had our most lethal striker supplying the cross and not finishing it off. :D

I think everyone is giving too much credit to Babel just because he played on the right, give him another go on the right and I am positive he won't look as 'good' as he did for what, 5-10minutes?  Against tired players mind you, still nowhere near convinced he has any place on the pitch.

With any attitude and faith like that in him by fans no matter he won't be arsed to perform . He had a solid cameo role down the right where we have been screaming out for god knows how long . He looks better  there as he doesn't have to cut in on his right

I thought we played quite well, perhaps lacked the clinical finish getting in the box but trying to thread the ball through, or dribble through, a reasonably well organised defence with bodies. We should have had another, but Kuyt couldn't control a ball begging to be slotted home, not that you can fault him for his game last night and his reaction getting us three points thanks to the keeper's fumble. We were too sloppy at times, gave away possession like with Insua's careless crossfield ball in his own half which was overambitious. We needed to mix it up more, had we scored early in proceedings I think we might have won more comfortably as the Hungarians grew in confidence and even the late 1st half goal didn't dent it too much. Even Babel played well at times as sub, one mazy dribble in particular stands out but we need more of that from him. not whinging to the media and trying to get his own way.

So that was Rafa's 300th game in charge. Worth a thread I think. Evening performance assessment was a 6/10, a lot of possession but too little conversion

The 3 points aside, there's pretty much nothing to write home about last night's performance...I reckon that must be one of the most inept performances against a Sunday league team EVER...
As one pundit said, those lads were there for the slaughter. They should've been annihilated by half-time.
And it's pretty worrting how "not bothered" both Torres and Gerrard looked last night. SG couldn't string two passes together, Torres completely off the boil....
It looks like something is preoccupying both of them at the moment.

i can forgive this performance

the hungarians are champions of their home league 4 of the last 5 seasons and 8 wins on the spin...

suggests a strong cohesive unit and with form that breeds a lot of confidence. Add that to their CL debut at one of the glittering palaces of european football  :bowdown  and this was always gonna be a toughy

we made hard work of it but a v deserved win

When you're in a team used to winning it garners a strong mentality

Herczeg: Liverpool were scared
17 September 2009 | 18:06 - PA Sport

Champions League new boys Debrecen almost made fools of five-times winners Liverpool at Anfield and the coach of Hungarian champions Debrecen, Andras Herczeg, suggested Rafael Benitez's side were scared of throwing away a victory at the end.

Carragher: Not vintage Liverpool
Group E: Liverpool struggle to win

Liverpool eventually won this group E clash 1-0, with Dirk Kuyt grabbing his 12th Champions League goal for the club.

But in the final stages, Debrecen were close to embarrassing Liverpool.

Herczeg said: "It says everything that in those final minutes I sent on an extra striker, and Rafael Benitez sent on a world-class midfielder, Javier Mascherano, to make sure that they did not throw away a victory."
