Gerrard needs to be played up front just behind Suarez,  or on the wing and maybe just maybe that will prevent him dropping back so deep .
If it was just Gerrard it wouldn't be so bad ,but the whole team follow suit and we instantly fall under the cosh  ....Its a Captains job to inspire and push the team forwards, sadly its been some time since we have been led to a storming victory by our Captain ... for me the teams shape is all wrong when he is used in the middle :(

This conversation will inevitably never go away. Yesterday was yet another example of why he's not a central midfielder. The number of times he gave the ball away was criminal and when we lost the ball he didn't even make any attempt to get back.

Go back to 4-2-3-1 and play gerrard off the front man with lucas and raul as the two central midfielders.

I think Gerrard will go further back not forward as the years catch up and the legs stop working. A his peak he was an engine but you wonder how much that will catch up now hes in the autumn of his career and the injurys creeping in more and more. I would see him sitting deeper and playing the ball about not bombing about up top at his age. Looks to me like hed put a timber on as well yesterday so no wonder he couldnt leg back  :;):

I can't agree whatsoever with that. Gerrard is the typical CM midfielder.

Yesterday he was a victim of a team still recovering from a bad season and his own fitness limitations returning from injury.

He is out of shape. His injuries this season have left him woefully short of match fitness. He doesn't look right. His passing problems yesterday smacked of someone struggling to come to terms with the pace of the game. West Ham harried him into mistake after mistake.

If he stays injury free for the remainder of the season we'll surely see him returning to his best. Too late though....

I said that exact same thing at half time in the match thread. He has a little paunch now. Someone (Kenny) needs to make it clear to him that at his age physical fitness is a priority, weight gain will only serve to increase his injury spells and severely limit his mobility as a midfielder.

I dont think he's a centre midfielder either. He should be higher up the pitch IMO. Everytime he's been in the middle of the park lately we've looked lost
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road
