Ryan Babel - What do you think ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

gonna copy and paste my comment on the match thread regarding babel's not looking like a striker...  :D

anyway to toffehaters reply on my comment on babel... yes I think babel is not a striker... because he had gilt-edged chances which HAD to be put away there's no doubt about it...peter crouch would've put them away... I remember him having MORE than 2 chances in the whole game... one was early in the first half... kuyt gave him a good pass... he did very very well with his first touch turning the marseille defender and all of a sudden he was one on one with the keeper and the keeper was still behind... with the whole goal to choose from, what did he do? It seemed to me like he closed his eyes and whacked the ball so hard it went to the stands... another one is where later on in the second half reira attacked down the left and sent in a dangerous cross... benayoun and marseille defender went for the the ball and it spilt out to babel... alone close range he blasted the ball again... hitting the keeper... another one was also a goalmouthscramble... he could've slipped the ball under the keeper towards the near post but again he blasted the ball... IF you consider this as a striker's finishing, then i must say I don't like strikers who just try to blast the ball without an intent, I like strikers who finish the ball into the net intelligently like Torres or Owen. Not to say the rest of his performance was bad... but he still blows hot and cold for me... and I don't like the look of his finishing skills...

Mate, I know what you're trying to say.

But, Gerrard was 20 years old in the 2000-1 season.

He was consistent enough then, integral to us doing the treble.
It was that season he scored that wonder goal against Man U.

But, it's unfair to compare Babel to Gerrard.

Babel just doesn't seem to have enough nous.

But, you're right in saying he should improve - maybe he WILL flourish this season.

Legbarnes, Toffeehater and GYBS have to be three of the most clueless, happy clappy, everythings rosey posters I've ever seen in my life.

Ya know whats going to really upset me, come the end of the season, I know for a fact I'll be dragging this thread up and saying "I told you so".

I'd love it if I was wrong. If only we were actually good enough and we won the league and everyone could say it to me, I'd be on the streets bladdered for weeks so wouldn't give a :censored: anyway, the fact is though, come the end of the season I'll be the one who's right. Then next season, I'll got through the same again just I always seem to do...

Boring... :no

Are you Mourinihos twin ? the one with all the arrogance but without the know how and ability ?

How do you know crouch would have put those away , crouch would not even had got himself the chance with babel did with his first touch , crouch would not have won us a peanlty and crouch certainly would not have scored that goal with the keeper running towards him , giving him no time to aim . Unless you've tried it in fifa 2008 i take it  :no

At end Of day I feel people are exspecting to much from the lad at such a young age I personal feel its a bonus he is doing this well this fast into season and if he carrys on at this rate of progress he should be a world beater by the age of 23 which byu all acounts isn't bad at all end of story.

Well first of I did watch the game so i know the chances in fact I watched game 3 times now.

2nd of all the 2nd chance you speak of with benny he couldn't score that keep made up to much ground and got hand in way if he had hit the ball softer his foot would have taken longer to reacht he ball and keep would have had time to grab the ball.

As for you not liking strikers who hit ball with power , since when has it been down to a pans personal pref , how the hell out players hit the ball.

I mean wtf You wanna tell the player how to run next or you don't like how they move foot to the right when they do step overs maybe you like them to move the ball to the left before.

Or maybe you don't like they cross the ball to flat you want more air , basicly they play how they play end of story.

As long as he carrys on to improve I could care how he plays its his style , I personal think his style will be very effective once he nails it.

Strikers who only hit with power?
Adriano, Shearer, Drogba, Rooney, Barnes (while at Watford), even Van Persie.

Besides we have played 7 games this season, played well for about 100 minutes and were still unbeaten so where is the problem?

PS: As for Lucas he is still better than any English 20 years old midfielder, so why can't he be inconistent?

I think he's a good option upfront when we are attacking. Not when we are defending though.

The problem with playing upfront in a 4-4-2 is he's hardly ever played upfront in that system. In Holland, every side is brought up playing a 4-3-3 in which the likes of Babel excelled.

Good point.

I do see him as a backup striker, but for me he is best on the right wing and will pick up goals from there coming in when the ball is out on the left - ala Utd on Saturday.
