Real Madrid convinced bid for Liverpool's Gerrard back on
tribalfootball.com - June 16, 2005

Real Madrid have been encouraged by recent exchanges with Liverpool over their pursuit of midfielder Steven Gerrard.

The Mirror says Real Madrid officials have twice contacted Reds boss Rafa Benítez in recent weeks about the midfielder's availability and, on both occasions, have been told that the 25-year-old is not for sale.

However, Benitez is acutely aware that his best option could be to cash in on Gerrard as he attempts to revamp his squad on limited funds.

The Spaniard has £25 million to spend, but inflated fees are proving a stumbling block as he seeks six major signings during this summer's market.

Real have been encouraged by Liverpool's frustrations and will wait with interest to see the result of the forthcoming contract negotiations.

The midfielder has been made aware of the Spanish club's interest through his representatives SFX and, though his instinct would be to remain in England should he ever leave Anfield, he will wait to see what is on offer from Liverpool before making a decision on his immediate future.

When the fu(k will all this drival end?  The truth is, probably never!  Even if he signs an extension to the contact, come Jan the media will be spouting that he is leaving!

25 million to spend? How do we have less to spend this year than last year when this year we've won the CL and earned huge amounts of money?

I believe its more around the range of 30-45 million pounds.

Maybe they are using the extra income to repay some of the debt accrued last year.

How  would be able to sign quality players for 20 million? Reina alone is 8 million.

Even with the debt, the CL money from tv revenue,tickets,etc...  would give us  at least 30 million to spend. The chairman knows we need to strengthen so must have given Rafa more than a measly 20 million which is the same amount Wigan are going to spend this summer.....

AB,  as I said somewhere else, we'll probably never know, for certain, how much he was given, undisclosed transfer fees, etc.  It'll be at least September before we can make an educated guess.  The media quoted figures are as much speculation/rumours as the players we've been linked with.

Neway, I trust Rafa will get the right players - he got us the European Cup, after all !!!!  :D  :D  :D

This is exactly what I thought, so if we didnt win the CL rafa would have no money to spend then? Its all :censored: garbage

Just watching the fans farewell after the villa game at anfield did anyone else notice gerrard was like 10 yards in front of the rest of the team and his body language seemed parculiar and not like him at all. In fact it was very similar to michael owens on his last game at anfield. I really hope this isn't the case but don't forget that was before the champions league final so touch wood he stays.

If there are no bids for Gerrard ive no doubt he will sign and all the better. If Madrid pile in with a hug bid then the picture changes completely, both for the player and the club. For one, Gerrard will be tempted by a lucrative move, and we also must consider any substanial bid because the players only 2 years left on his deal. Afterall, we dont want another one going on the cheap or at worst for free. A very tough call.

Rick parry was on radio 5 earlier, this is what he had to say.
Pre-season plans extremely confusing

Tour to Japan off - still sorting our pre-season training camp.

Back earlier than normal anyway - awful lot of rearranging to do.

Will have played around the same number of pre-season games anyway - major concern is travel to far flung destinations in CL interrupting pre-season training.

Easier names than Everton in the hat in 3rd round .....

Grateful that we're in CL - easiest decision would have been to leave us out. However still odd - received letter from UEFA saying TH will be first team in.

Japan in December - will we pull out? Contrary to some reports not expressed a view as not seen details. Parry's understanding is it is by invitation. Problem is we'll be two premier league games behind because of CL qualifying and Supercup before even going to Japan.

Feedback from UEFA on this is they've assured us it is voluntary which is at odds with Blatter's comments.

How much is next season's Premier League priority affected by all this? We'll get on with it - our aim is to win it not just qualify for CL. We've proved we can live with the best on our day - when not on our day we can be shocking - needs to be addressed. First XI good but needs improving as does squad.

Steven Gerrard - no panic but a priority to sort it out. SG always wanted to be successful with us - he's now won the biggest prize here. Will is there on both sides - won't negotiate in public. What about thought of 3 or 4 for the price of one is we sold for 40 million? Not in Liverpool's plans and all comers have been told that. Priority is to built a winning team around him. All this talk is academic - we want to keep him. About building teams not dismantling them.

Rafa future? Real? Rafa's ambitious - chose us over Real last summer. He envisaged winning European Cup with us but not this early. He has a hunger with Liverpool and a job he wants to finish here. How central is he to LFC? The most important appointment you can make and it can cost a lot of money so essential to take time and appoint right man - absolutely confident last summer he was the right man - since then things have shown this. What about a ten year contract like Mourinho? Chelsea do things their way we do things our - both sides are very happy and Rafa's enjoying working here.

Wouldn't say how much we have to spend and declined to comment on Micheal Owens future saying it would be disrespectful to comment.

Gave the impression that he has the utmost respect for Owen and that he will succeed wherever he plays his football.

Between the lines I took it that he still thinks this will be at Madrid.

From Rushian off RAWK.
So we WONT be cashing in on Gerrard i like the way he says we are building the team not dismanteling it, so put all this gerrard saga to bed please and see what happens.

i reckon stevies gonna stay with us it wouldnt make sense for him to leave now he has said all along he wanted to win trophies and now he has won the big one. Also hes supposed to start contract negotiations very soon and i think it will all be resolved in a week or two. I will be very surprised if stevie leaves and i dont think we could replace him in the team
