So, that’s a total spend of just over £83m in 5 years at the club. An average of £16.6m a year.

The vast majority of his signings have been sold at profit, or if still at the club, are worth a lot more than we paid for them. Exceptions being Babel and Dossena, but we’ll still get decent fees for them when sold as they’re full internationals.

A lot of the signings above have been stepping stones in rebuilding the squad, gradually improving it by replacing players with better ones. Our league positions over the past 5 years and the improvement in our league positions and points totals show the progression.

2004/05: Finished 5th – 58 pts
2005/06: Finished 3rd – 82 pts
2006/07: Finished 3rd – 68 pts
2007/08: Finished 4th – 76 pts
2008/09: Finished 2nd – 86 pts

Is it any coincidence that the progression seems to have stopped this summer? Look at the transfer activity above for this year and it might explain why.

Look at our net spend over the past 2 years!

We have a wage bill that is the 5th highest in the league. We can’t afford to pay players £70,000 to be sat on the bench like United and Chelsea can.

Rafa Benitez’ record with signings at the top end of the market is nothing short of brilliant. Robbie Keane being the only flop, but he was sold 6 months later and only a small financial hit taken on that mistake. Rick Parry agreed the fee for buying him in the first place, and common knowledge Rafa wasn’t happy with it; feeling it was far too high.

Where has this myth come from that he’s wasted money on players? Have a look through the lists above and try to point them out. There isn’t many.

The ones that haven’t worked out he’s moved on, and not very often has he made a financial loss on them.

The squad is now worth a hell of a lot more than the one he inherited, and that £83m net spend over 5 years is easily offset by the increased value of the squad. He’d recoup nearly all of that through the sale of Torres alone!

He’s worked absolute wonders with the money he’s had to spend. Then take into account the massive amounts of money he’s self generated by reaching the latter stages of the CL every season. Two final appearances, one win. That £83m he’s spent he’s earned the right to spend.

And when comparing it to what United have spent in the same period is flawed, as they already had a title winning squad and all the foundations in place. They weren’t rebuilding from scratch like we were. It also doesn’t take into account their massive wage bill.

When comparing to Chelsea, they spent all their money before Rafa came to the club and just topping up an already established squad.

Man City have spent more than double in the past 12 months than Rafa Benitez has in his 5 year reign.

Do some people still want to get rid of him? If so, you’ve been listening to Andy Gray and Richard Keys for too much and unable to look at the facts yourself to form an opinion.

Every manager makes tactical mistakes. Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market. Despite what the press seem to think; Rafael Benitez appears to make less mistakes than most.

We’re expected to win the league and European Cup on a budget and wage bill that is entitled to finish 4th or 5th in the league. We’ve been overachieving under Rafael Benitez, not underachieving.

I’m not even going to mention the environment he’s working in under them two clowns.

Ciggy I think you miss the point of this post. Its not the amount that Rafa Has spent its the he bought.  He has invested far too much time in bringing in stop gap players and after 5 years of buying young players the only notable exceptions are Torres, Alonso and Mascherano.  As for Rafa being brilliant, If you want to Look at a comparitive analysis you'll see that in terms of money spent for points won Rafa does not do so well.  I don't know why Im even bothering to get into this conversation stats are Rafa's domain not the real substantive issues such as he is in trouble.  Note I have not yet joined the ranks of the fickle fans and called for his head but like so many others I am very frustrated by his tactics, especially his pre season tactic of playing all the youngsters only to not risk playing them when he needs them.  An example would be Darby who played well in pre season instead he selects Degen who's a tube, and is the only player I know who trips over his own shadow.  We are miles behind in terms of youth development.  However the thing that wories me most is that many of the players lack confidence and don't seem to be playing for the shirt thats man management which Rafa himself would acknowledge is not his strong point thats why he brought in Sammy Lee.  Pick any 11 and without belief we'd still fail to beat Fulham.

I know facts and figures can be used to argue both sides of this debate, but when you take a look at our first team its quiet obvious were the difference in net spend has went

Reina - 6 Million (Bargin worth maybe three times this amount now even in the current market. Est 12-15 Million)
G Johnston - 17.5 Million (Slightly over priced but still cost less than Boswinga at Chelsea. Est 12-15 Million)
Skrtel - 6.5 Million (Good price and worth more now even with the drop in form. 8-10 Million)
J Carragher - 0 (Came through the ranks so and one of the only two remaining first team players from pre Rafa)
Insua - 1.5 Million (initally a decent prospect no more, now a good steady pro would command a figure of double what we first paid. 3-4 Million)
Macherano - 18.6 Million (Never considered a risk by Rafa and he has been proven right exspected to go to Barca for 30 million in Jan of this summer. Est 25-30 Million)
Aquilani - 17.5 Million (Still to be tested in the Prem, so can't really decide at the minute. 15-20 Million)
Gerard - Priceless (But again came through the ranks and along with JC the only remaining first team player)
Kuyt - 9 Million (Derided for the first two seasons at the club now given that the grease ball has left United probably the most consistant right midfielder in the Prem10-12 Million)
Reira - 8 Million (I would have him before Youssi, open to debate on this position. His purchase was questioned at the time but has shown enough in his 1 1/2 season to show he has the quality required. 10-12 Million)
Torres - 20.2 (Rumoured to have been on the end of a 70 Million pound bid from city in the summer. Est 50-70 Million)

Total cost of our first team excluding the players Rafa didn't bring into the club 104.5 Million, estimated value between 145-188 Million. We also have now in the agruably the best Keeper, right back, defensive midfielder, all rounder midfielder and striker in the Prem. Squad pre Rafa only had Gerrard. Yet still we haven't got one player that we have purchased for over 30 Million when compared to Chelsea our United who have 3 a piece in their squads. As I said at the start the figures can be debated and thats why they are a useless stick to beat Rafa with but no one can question that our first team in undoubtably stronger and better than the one he inherited and would cost almost double the net spend of his entire rein

Ciggy I think you miss the point of this post. Its not the amount that Rafa Has spent its the sh!t he bought.

If you read my post again, you find that I agree that he has bought some absolute garbage, but he has also bought some absolute gems.

But he is not alone every manager buys sh!te, its just that Rafa gets singled out time and time again, no other manager gets as much flack from the media and our fans than he does.

My point was this players bought and sold list is going around in circles and is wheeled out on a weekly basis, its getting friggen boring and tedious.

Ciggy, I think you're trying to equate "balancing the books" with a more fundamental aspiration of spending millions in the transfer market i.e. the ultimate aim is to improve the squad both in terms of first team players, and suitable backup in the event that one, two, or at the moment SIX first team players are unavailable.
There's a further aspirational element, namely promoting from within - bringing Academy or Reserve team players through the ranks and ensuring that only those good enough will make it to the bench, with the possibility of a future as an LFC player.
So, on all fronts, let me use some of your examples:
Keane : Whether we like it or not, and Rafa's childish pouting aside, £19M was spent on a player who is a) a proven goalscorer in the Premiership, and b) proven at international level. The very fact that under protest, Rafa made sure that instead of making the worst of a bad situation and trying to maximise the potential Keans has for scoring goals, he plants him firmly on the bench; or ensures that a policy of playing a player out of position, or substituting him pretty much every game he plays, will demotivate a lad so much that it's a lose-lose for all...
That's just one example of how an outlay of £19M is truly wasted.
Add up all the "peanuts" you mentioned above - how much does it come to ?
How many of the young lads ever got a game with the first team - why were so many of them bought in the first place ? On a punt ? That's a pretty disastrous transfer policy, if you ask me....

I watched the Reserves game last week, and when you look at the Scum players - even the Reserves bench - how are we not picking these lads up instead ?

We were beaten to Vidic as well - where was Rafa and his crew looking while our competitors were picking up these players ?

We have a wage bill that is the 5th highest in the league. We can’t afford to pay players £70,000 to be sat on the bench like United and Chelsea can.

Rafa Benitez’ record with signings at the top end of the market is nothing short of brilliant. Robbie Keane being the only flop, but he was sold 6 months later and only a small financial hit taken on that mistake. Rick Parry agreed the fee for buying him in the first place, and common knowledge Rafa wasn’t happy with it; feeling it was far too high.

Where has this myth come from that he’s wasted money on players? Have a look through the lists above and try to point them out. There isn’t many.

The ones that haven’t worked out he’s moved on, and not very often has he made a financial loss on them.

The squad is now worth a hell of a lot more than the one he inherited, and that £83m net spend over 5 years is easily offset by the increased value of the squad. He’d recoup nearly all of that through the sale of Torres alone!

He’s worked absolute wonders with the money he’s had to spend. Then take into account the massive amounts of money he’s self generated by reaching the latter stages of the CL every season. Two final appearances, one win. That £83m he’s spent he’s earned the right to spend.

And when comparing it to what United have spent in the same period is flawed, as they already had a title winning squad and all the foundations in place. They weren’t rebuilding from scratch like we were. It also doesn’t take into account their massive wage bill.

When comparing to Chelsea, they spent all their money before Rafa came to the club and just topping up an already established squad.

Man City have spent more than double in the past 12 months than Rafa Benitez has in his 5 year reign.

I agree with it as well but I still see fact that rafa over 5 years even tho he has had to sell still has spent 220 off mil on players.But I still can't see where the 15 odd 15 mil players are is he hiding them somewhere ? When you do the math 220 mil gets you 15 ish 15 mil players You can take 1 and half off for Torres.If any thing that well thought out post just highlights more that Rafa has bought season on season instead of building a team over the 4-5 seasons.

Keane : Whether we like it or not, and Rafa's childish pouting aside, £19M was spent on a player who is a) a proven goalscorer in the Premiership, and b) proven at international level.

And was doomed to be a failure at Liverpool, I went mad when we signed him, he is an ok player just not suited to us, maybe 5 years ago but not now, take your irish glasses off for a minute.

I also didnt agree with the signing of Pennant, Bellamy and Barry aswell, 3 players that should not have come here either, ok only two did, they where big mistakes.

Although in saying that if barry would have signed for us than City we wouldnt have played so bad this season, hes no Alonso but an improvement on Lucas, plus Bellamy and Keane are better options to have than Ngog and Voronin.

So, that’s a total spend of just over £83m in 5 years at the club. An average of £16.6m a year.

The vast majority of his signings have been sold at profit, or if still at the club, are worth a lot more than we paid for them. Exceptions being Babel and Dossena, but we’ll still get decent fees for them when sold as they’re full internationals.

A lot of the signings above have been stepping stones in rebuilding the squad, gradually improving it by replacing players with better ones. Our league positions over the past 5 years and the improvement in our league positions and points totals show the progression.

Is it any coincidence that the progression seems to have stopped this summer? Look at the transfer activity above for this year and it might explain why.

We have a wage bill that is the 5th highest in the league. We can’t afford to pay players £70,000 to be sat on the bench like United and Chelsea can.

Rafa Benitez’ record with signings at the top end of the market is nothing short of brilliant. Robbie Keane being the only flop, but he was sold 6 months later and only a small financial hit taken on that mistake. Rick Parry agreed the fee for buying him in the first place, and common knowledge Rafa wasn’t happy with it; feeling it was far too high.

Where has this myth come from that he’s wasted money on players? Have a look through the lists above and try to point them out. There isn’t many.

The ones that haven’t worked out he’s moved on, and not very often has he made a financial loss on them.

The squad is now worth a hell of a lot more than the one he inherited, and that £83m net spend over 5 years is easily offset by the increased value of the squad. He’d recoup nearly all of that through the sale of Torres alone!

He’s worked absolute wonders with the money he’s had to spend. Then take into account the massive amounts of money he’s self generated by reaching the latter stages of the CL every season. Two final appearances, one win. That £83m he’s spent he’s earned the right to spend.

And when comparing it to what United have spent in the same period is flawed, as they already had a title winning squad and all the foundations in place. They weren’t rebuilding from scratch like we were. It also doesn’t take into account their massive wage bill.

When comparing to Chelsea, they spent all their money before Rafa came to the club and just topping up an already established squad.

Man City have spent more than double in the past 12 months than Rafa Benitez has in his 5 year reign.

Do some people still want to get rid of him? If so, you’ve been listening to Andy Gray and Richard Keys for too much and unable to look at the facts yourself to form an opinion.

Every manager makes tactical mistakes. Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market. Despite what the press seem to think; Rafael Benitez appears to make less mistakes than most.

We’re expected to win the league and European Cup on a budget and wage bill that is entitled to finish 4th or 5th in the league. We’ve been overachieving under Rafael Benitez, not underachieving.

I’m not even going to mention the environment he’s working in under them two clowns.

I agree with it as well but I still see fact that rafa over 5 years even tho he has had to sell still has spent 220 off mil on players.But I still can't see where the 15 odd 15 mil players are is he hiding them somewhere ? When you do the math 220 mil gets you 15 ish 15 mil players You can take 1 and half off for Torres.If any thing that well thought out post just highlights more that Rafa has bought season on season instead of building a team over the 4-5 seasons.

What happens when one or more of those 15 mil players get injured ? who do you replace them with ? You cant just go buy 15 15 mil players - half of what Rafa has bought is youth for the future and also some second choice buys plus the top quality players - its not like Rafa has been given 200 mil in one go and told to go buy who he wants .
