bigmick wrote:As far as the title challenge is concerned, we obviously must win on Sunday. The most worrying thing though, is that if we don't and even lose, what might happen then?

My guess is if we draw we're probably gone, if we lose we are absolutely gone for all money. In those circumstances, we'd be back into a dogfight for third/fourth. We'd probably be around level with Villa, and say three points above Arsenal. My read from then on in is this:

Arsenal have a run of winnable games coming up. West Ham (h) Tottenham (a) Fulham (h) and Sunderland (h) could see them finding some form. Unlike us, they will have been resigned to the fact they weren't going to win the Premiership for quite a while now and as such are in the right frame of mind to "rescue their season". They have some top young players, and will probably feel that if they can sneak fourth having been without their best player for most ofd the season and having sold two of their best ones in the Summer, it isn't a bad effort. I am expecting them to begin to get interested towards the end of the season.

Villa have Wigan (h), Blackburn (a), Chelsea (h) and Stoke (h) so they aren't going to fall away for the time being either I don't think.

The worry is that if we get completely derailed and take a couple of weeks to get our head around things, we could be right up against it. It doesn't matter which way you look at it, this Sundays match is absolutely vital, of the utmost importance.

Is it just me mick or do these big games just don't worrie me ?

Its the little teams that scare the :censored: out of me , sad thing is we know we get a performance from our players in the chav game yet so many fail to impress in the little games.

Thats my most worring problem atm and tbh since there is more little teams then big ones where is gonna leave us end of season.

me to i aint that bothered about mannure, chelsea and arsenal games anymore. Its the small teams that make me think now. Ever since the stoke game when we play an average side i feel as nervous as any other man. Feckin we really should be lucky we drew that match. What if that wigan player who struck the bar towards the end. If that went in we would have been in deep shyte...

The way we are going on in the league with many draws is how rafa implements his teams he manages. If you browse through that amount of draws valencia had in thier title hunt you will realise. The team he sets out or the ridiculous changes he makes is bound to get average results.

NEVER FEAR - Lucas thinks we can still win the title. Shame he came out with it AFTER I did my poll, would have been top of the options

Reds still in title hunt - Lucas

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says his Anfield team-mates still believe they can win the Premier League title.

The Reds 1-1 draw at Wigan on Wednesday, their ninth in the League this season, saw them slip down to third place in the table.

Lucas told BBC Radio Merseyside: "If we don't believe, then who will?

"We believe because we have a good squad and a good manager. Maybe we have to start taking our chances, but unfortunately I conceded a penalty."

The Reds had led 1-0 at the JJB Stadium courtesy of a first-half Yossi Benayoun strike, before Lucas fouled Jason Koumas to concede a penalty, which Wigan debutant Mido dispatched.

Rafa Benitez's side have now drawn their last four matches in all competitions.

Lucas admits his side's recent failure to win has become frustrating.

"For everybody (it is frustrating), we were maybe two or three points ahead of the other teams at the end of the year.

"Things will change if we work hard but of course we know we are drawing too much and we know we have to win the next game," said Lucas.

On a positive note we had a January slump last year. From February onwards we won 13, drew 1 and lost 1 of our last 15 League games.

However the difference is we achieved that when the pressure was essentially off. By this time in each of the last couple of seasons we have already been out of it.

I think if we could repeat that run of results we would win it this year.

as long as we're in it mathematically, we can still win it. of course right now things seem bleak. but it could go either way. with chelsea, villa, arsenal all in there with us and the scums.

I like that, and if the 1 loss is at anywhere but Old Trafford it could be enough to win it.

I'd give him a two year contract, if by then he hasnt produced the goods then maybe some of the Melons around here who blindly stick up for the man will eventually realise time has to be called upon.

As undoubtedly puzzling and annoying Rafa can be with certain stratergies, this is the FIRST season in his tenure where I've actually believed, or have been given something to believe about. I think it would be a waste of time and effort to wave him goodbye come the end of the season. We just dont know what lurks around the corner, granted this year more than any other year IMO has looked the easiest dare I say to challenge for the title but so what. We still are in a decent position and still have a chance, even if we finnish second I'll be happy to see Rafa give it another shot next year. If by miraculous discovery next season the league proves to be much sterner than our current campaign and we finnish fourth, I'd be happy for the club to pay-out Rafa on his final year's contract and give him the boot.

Sounds, quite nasty and sinister really, but football is a cut throat business, and its the business end of Rafa's tenure and plans need to be made. Its nice there are so many 'Love ins' with the likes of Lando and Sabre (for obvious reasons) but  time will come when enough is enough.

I think its a bit of a gamble either way TBH, see Rafa off at the end of the season and hope some other bloke can come in a get the job done with players like Carra and Gerrard entering the twighlight of their careers. Or given the Spainard the honour of having Carra and Gerrard under him in the prime of their careers, and finnishing off their careers possibly without a title medal. If that were the case I'm sure in years to come Rafa  will be remembered for two things, winning the CL in glorious fashion, and having the likes of Carra and Gerrard in his team without winning a title. Just like how Houllier and his reign seems to be remembered, not for the exhilerating 5-4 UEFA cup final or that brilliant treble season. But more like a man, who was making the same old tiresome excuses post match and a manager one who turned Liverpool into a route-one football team, and was remembered more for buying the "next Zidane" Cheyrou than he was for Hyypia.

People reading that will go on about the old "stevie me" thing and all that old tosh, but I think its important for a club to maintain its roots, and nurture its homegrown talent. Of which under Rafas tenure there certainly doesnt look as though any more Scouse lads will be coming through. Did Rafa put an end to the Academy production line of homegrown talent, if not, surely he's suffocated the life and blood out of it. Which now is only producing mediocre foreign talent from afar without any rewards.

Not only the fact that possibly Gerrard and Carra two of Liverpools best players over the last ten years end their careers without a winners medal, which I think would be one of the biggest injustisies in modern day football and obviously from a bias Liverpool supporter. But even the likes of Reina, Hyypia who's been a great servant, Alonso, Mascha and Torres all quality footballers who deserve a winners medal from a bias Liverpool supporters point of view.

I cant see another manager coming in and with the possibilty of certain players following Rafa out, building a team in quick succession and getting them the winning title. I think alot has got to be done behind the scenes firstly and thats as mammoth task as getting our boys back on our perch. Then the day to day training drills and methods of possibly for arguements sake a more offensive minded coach, there will be a big transition period and by then Carra almost definately and Gerrard possibly will already be thinking .... 'What might of been, if I swapped Anfield for Romans Rupples' many moons ago.

So for the sake of the club and the foreseeable and for the sake of our two local lads who've sweated blood for this club down the years and to have any chance whatsoever in winning a Premiership medal Benitez needs to stay and produce the goods, its the business end of his era and now would be a bloo.dy good time to prove all those doubters (myself included) wrong.

Good post Bam - cant disagree with any of it.

The problem may be though; If/when we were to say farewell to Rafa, can we trust the people
in charge of the club to get a top manager in?

What if they were to pick a Klinnsman instead of a Hiddink (or whoever)?

I would be more confident with DIC in charge istead of the 2 DIKS.
