JOE COLE - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It was a bad shout for Cole to take the penalty but I can understand him wanting to be eager to atone for Sunday's debacle. Having said that, he did create the goal for Babel and showed some nice touches.

The game wasn't won, the tie far from won, so trying to get him off the mark was a poor call. That said the only real alternative was Torres who doesn't take our penalties when Gerrard is on the pitch.

Agree, it was a poor call, my reaction the minute I saw it was Cole to take the pen was "Oh F*ck !"

Was surprised that Torres didn't step up for it although personally I would have liked Aurelio to have taken it.

I think Torres has only taken 1 maybe 2 pens in the last few years.

Definitly an area that we should try to focus on.  Roy should pick 4 players that he wants to practise their pen's.  That way we should have an alternative to Stevie.

i'd have gone for jovanovich myself. for one i'm sure he'd break the net, and for two, i can't wait to see how he celebrates scoring.

surely a goalscorer should always want to score goals no matter how they come by them - Fernando should be our penalty taker

game is over, move on. even regular penalty takers miss penalties on occasions. hopefully the miss doesnt contribute to our elimination.

i get the impression that our elimination wouldn't make Roy blink an eyelid given last nights team selection

Surely the team is well aware of who the penalty taker is?

Since i posted this, i heard that Roy chose Joe Cole to take Pens before the game.

It was an awful penalty though and the first of his career.  Surely we should try and have one or two practise and be ready to take one if Stevie is not playing.

Gerrard and Kuyt are good at Pens.  but after that... im not too confident about the rest of our squad going near one.

Why did Roy want Joe to take the penalty when he hasn't taken one before? Was Kuyt playing? And as for where I would play Joe - up front. For obvious reasons.

I don't know why Joe was chosen to take it.  Gerrard or Kuyt werent playing.

i think some on here are over-estimating the "penalty taking" ability of players, i mean i saw today that Cameroon keeper Enyeme whack a pen into the side net in a champions league match under similar pressure. What i mean to say is, anyone can miss a penalty OR score a penalty, Joe was just unlucky and i back him to respond quickly

Jovanovic was a regular penalty taker for Liege and should have took it.  If he's prepared to fight with team-mates (as shown in the link someone posted on here) he must be confident of scoring.  I accept that penalty taking can be a bit of a lottery but if that was Cole's first attempt in a competitive match it was a ridiculous decision to allow him to take it.  Anyway, chin up Joe, things can only get better.  Apologies to Milan Jovanovic whose penalty taking career at LFC I have surely jinxed.
