Ever since beginning of last season Carra only is an automatic 1st choice cause of his legend status.

The fact is he hasn't been good enough to warrant a starting berth since then.

sad to say he is past it. i would pick Kyrgiakos ahead of him. and Sktel too.
Carra should be rotated and not an automatic first choice.

Wow is that true? Carra should not even be in the first-team atm, he is just living on past performances. Seems he is milking the power he and gerrard have in the club.

He really is past it and wasn't worth the 2 year deal, we need to start putting in someone better ahead of him and send him packing if he doesn't like it.  But we need a strong minded manager for that and Roy isn't it.

Anyone seen the vid of Torres and Carra taking blindoflded penalties for charity? Both of them seemed really happy together, i think maybe this talk of a row has been blown up a bit from dissapointing results because they really looked like they were having a lot of fun, i'll try and find a link somewhere. :;):

I'm interested to hear who those calling Carra 'past it' would pick instead of him.

Skrtel??  Garbage player, never been the same since he did his knee v Man City two seasons back.  Gives away far too many free kicks in bad areas and is positionally suspect.  Can't pass either.  Fu.cking terrible.

Agger??  Good player but not a great player and can't stay fit either.  Also bad for giving away silly free kicks.

Kyrgiakos??  Well he's actually been one of our more reliable performers since he signed, but he was always just a stop gap player.  He has his uses away from home against teams that lump it, but he's just not comfortable with the ball at his feet and is a hindrance at Anfield.

Carragher is still by some distance the best defender we have, even if he's not as good as he was a few seasons ago.  I do think his form this season is improved from last season though, which was a really poor season for him, his worst in fact.

Have you ever thought that maybe Skrtel looks bad because he plays with Carragher?  Carragher is an anti footballer who causes a lot of damage on the pitch with his screaming, his poor heading ability and his constant hoofing.  If he wasn't Scouse he would have been dropped a long time ago and everyone knows it.

Id take Skrtel Agger / Kyrgiakos Agger ahead of Carra Skrtel anytime, but I would still like to see us purchase a top class CB soon.

Look, there are better central defenders around than Carragher, obviously.  You mentioned his hoofing, which admittedly is frustrating and it's also clear that he has lost pace and has never been great in the air even in his prime.

But the point is that the standard of centre halves at the club is poor and the fact that Carragher is still our best reflects that, especially because he peaked between 2005-2007 and has been on the way down since.  But he's comfortably our best centre back.  Still.

As for Skrtel looking bad because he plays alongside Carra - that's just such a ludicrous comment I'm not even going to debate it.  Skrtel is one of a number of rubbish players on our books at the moment that need shipped out long before an ageing Carra.

Have to agree with JC 100% on this one, Carra is still comfortably our best defender. Agger is decent but there's no doubt for me he is over-rated by most LFC fans, he seems to get particularly good when he's injured i've noticed. As for Skrtel, he's not bad on his day but they are few and far between, I never quite been able to trust and I think he will always be that sort of player. If we've got a bit of money and the manager somehow manages to keep his job then I suggest he goes all out to sign Hangeland from Fulham in January. We'd see better from from Carra from that moment on I guarantee it.

Definitely agree on this Scott.  Carra has never been comfortable being the one to go and win the aerial battles.  He has to do it when he plays alongside Agger or Skrtel because neither of them are comfortable doing it either and they don't take the responsibility.  Not since Hyypia played regularly have we seen the best of Carragher.  I don't think he can get back to that level again, but having a dominant centre half beside him, someone in the Hangelaand mould, would definitely improve Carra's game.  In the meantime I'd play Kyrgiakos alongside him.  I think the Greek's a solid defender and probably compliment's Carra's game better than the others.
