If you had to choose - Either of the following

right ok you have to pick one, not both, of the following...

quality right winger/midfielder

quality left winger/midfielder

take into account that Kewell may never play for us again and given our current choices on the left i feel this is a good question, righty or lefty which is more important to the team for next season? also take into account our current money most likely means one good signing a season as opposed to 4 chelsea style!

Quality left winger as Gerrard should play on the right - it's his best position.

I agree, especially as we have Momo, Mascherano and Alonso now. A great Left winger would give the team the balance we need if we are to win the epl next season. I still believe if Kewell had been fit, we would be a lot closer this season.

Agreed, left winger would be my first choice. Not sure if there is anyone out there. Robben is good but don't like his diving tactics. Maybe Vicente. Don't know too many good left winger though.

Quality right, as Gerrards best position is in the middle.

We've got possibly Kewell, Zenden, Gonzalez, Riise can do a job there too. And also Garcia, perhaps Aurelio aswell.

Right, we've got Gerrard who can do the job their, and Pennant. Hmmmm

Yes, definately a right mid, thanks.

here we go again, how is gerrard better on the right and why should he make way from the central position where he is better than the other central midfielders we have just to fill a gap.

buy a right winger who doesnt look like lionel ritchie and can go past people and keep gerrard where he does his best work, in the centre

I agree we need a new left winger, Zenden cannot cut it in the premiership gonzalez is too inexperienced so rafa should try for Robben or maybe Reyes as Real don't want him and Arsenal don't want him.

We need a worldclass LW....and yes vicente would be nice....!!!! i think gerard will have to play RW nex season because we got so much quality in the middle now and gerard slots nicely on the right

i agree that we've got a good set of midfielders which may push stevie out to the wing- but if Benitez does do this then who's going to take his place in scoring important goals. Alonso can't score unless he's in our half, Sissoko just can't score, and Mascharano is a holding player who probably won't be getting forward to be in a position to score.

As much as it seems to make sense, unless we get a real threat out on the left i can't see us getting many goals from midfield as Gerrard will be hugging the line. I know people are going to say he scored goals from there last season- but he scored most of his goals when he actually stated in the middle (or so i remember).

If this is the case then i do think we need to go out and buy big on a striker (E'too/Villa) who will score goals as we won't be getting as many from midfield.

That's not exactly how I remember it, mate.  Gerrard scored a fair few of his 23 goals last year "starting" on the right.  But, where Gerrard "started" last year often had little bearing - he would roam all over the pitch and get forward with abandon.  Why?  Because Sissoko and Alonso anchored the midfield behind him when all three played in the same midfield.

Now, I agree that Gerrard's best form this season has come after returning to the middle and the team's fortunes took a turn for the better at that time as well.  But, I haven't seen Gerrard getting forward nearly as much as last season.  Saturday's game was the first time in a while we've seen Gerrard consistently bursting into the box, creating and scoring goals.

But, rather than just turn this into the Gerrard debate all over again (:D) I'll turn to the question at hand and say we need a LM more.  Leaving Gerrard out of it completely, Pennant has settled in better than Gonzales, Kewell redefines 'crocked' and needs to go, Zenden's no longer good enough, and Riise/Aurelio feel rather stop gap.  A specialist left winger would make us a special team.  :nod

i'd say a proper top quality left winger. our whole left side has been pi$$ poor this season, despite the fact that we've got an abundance of left sided players. long term, you can't really put your faith in kewell, the jury is still out on gonzalez, and riise and aurelio seem to be classic "wing backs" to me. i think eventually adam hamill (who is a class prospect) will be our future left sided midfielder provided he is given the chance and is not just farmed out on loan season after season.

i'm another one of these "gerrard on the right" fans and think that he can cause more damage to the opposition from that position. pennant has shown some signs of improvement in 2007 although i don't think he's going to take us to the next level. ideally of course, we'd want a two footed player who could do damage on both flanks. the best example of this i can think of at the moment is ricardo quaresma from porto.
