Didnt know it was either buy from Portsmouth or the championship...
Way i see it Rafas gone nuts after being given total control over transfers and is being a little stubborn here (surprise surprise) with the whole Johnson thing...
no doubt the guys a good player but no way in a million years is he worth 18.5 mill....

Hes a CB though... Besides Alves, name one FB who cost more than 18.5 mill ? how many cost anywhere near that kind of money ?
Bosingwa maybe at around 16 but is Johnson really good enough for us to make him the 2nd most expensive fullback in history ?!

I don't understand if the player was having a medical last night then why would the club accept another offer? I can only think he said to the club he will go to Liverpool but if Chelsea bid as much then accept that. Which would mean he is just us around.

Doesn't really matter. There isn't anyone else we could go for without spending so much given the current market. And he is English.

we need a solid defender who can take care of business in our own end. Those normally can be found around 5 million.

Instead of paying 10 million+ for that extra flair on a defender, why not use that cash to get better attacking wingers, with more flair and creativity?

cmon ace - people have quoted you sergio ramos (he IS a FB), boswinga and also danny alves.... and also other CBs ....but you still think it is that strange for a top club to spend big on a fullback?

Our current "top" 5 full backs (aurelio, insua, arbeloa, doss, degan?) cost less than 10m between them

... i think mr benitez is allowed to splash out once in a while

would have rather went for Micah Richards, but Glen Johnson can do a better job than arbeloa and will give us more attacking options.
