the rush fee was a world record for a teenager.
my memory playing tricks on me, then again it was 30 years ago.
`blowing other teams out of the water` was probably the wrong phrase to use but the fact remains we spent as much as anyone to stay at the top.
you reminded me how much forest spent as well, the perception is that clough had success on a shoestring but he spent big on players like francis, fashanu and hartford.

I would argue we spent much less than most vying for the top spot until 1988, as benny has indicated

but I would direct to the link for some very interesting and detailed records of transfer fees

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/trans ... /transfers

thats a good site, it just reminded me that a little while after souness we spent big money on alan kennedy too, even alan hansen, i always thought we got him for buttons but he cost us £100,000 when the transfer record was £450,000.

well it just shows how £300,000 was hardly "a blown out of the water" fee compared to the clive allen £1.2 million

it was still a record fee for the time, and it came in a 3 or 4 year spell where we broke the british record on dalglish, spent £350,000 on souness (a record fee between 2 english clubs) and then a few months later spend £350,000 again on alan kennedy.
as i said maybe `blowing other teams out of the water` was the wrong phrase to use but we certainly spent as much if not more than anyone else in that period. it certainly wasnt done on a shoestring.
and lets not forget all this money was spent from a position of strength, something like 8 or 9 of the players involved in the 1977 european cup final were signed by shankly so the core of a good side was already there. all that money was being spent on an already very good side (european and english champions no less)

Liverpool are still a club that is rebuilding. We are still signing youngsters (L.Alberto) and probably a few more before we call it a day for transfers. I've not seen any of the top 4 sides signing youngsters, only Liverpool. Reason being the owners are not going to splash money around like Roman Abrom. and so the only solution is to sign future stars. Thus, I don't expect us to finish top 4 next season. I will only expect it if we can improve on points tally and finishing above 7th come next season. I am sure J.Henry won't be setting a CL qualification target for Brendan. All these talk from players that we can finish in top 4 is just a pipe dream. We stand a good chance of a significant progress next season but Chelsea, MCity, manure and Arsenal are at a different league to us right now. We cannot catch up with them in one season.

Well, that is the reality. Just not easy to temper all LFC supporters expectations....
I am just afraid we gets stuck in this "Arsenal light scenario" where we become a permanent farm club to the big ones.
FSG would be happy no matter how as long as they make money. They don't care if they make 100 million in profit from prize money or 100 million in profit from selling players.

big summer this one for brendan, i think he`s got a hell of a job on his hands just trying to ensure that we dont start the next campaign with a weaker starting XI than we finished the last one with.
there`s a very good chance that we could lose a lot of high profile players (suarez, reina, carragher, carroll etc) in this window.

No offence but we've already lost Carra and Carroll and the latter was only high profile because this club forked out a ridiculous amount of money for him.

But yes, i agree Rodgers does have a bit of a job on his hands this summer.

carroll was a big name before he came here and just because he doesnt suit our system doesnt mean he isnt a very effective player, look at the havoc he caused against man united last season for west ham. lets see if aspas can cause the same type of panic in the champions defence next season.
infact if we dont get this papadopolous lad carroll will ruin our defence next season, he demolished soto and skrtel up at st james just before we bought him. if we cant handle carlton cole and jon walters god help us when we have to deal with carroll.

i wouldnt say mingolet is any better than reina, i wouldnt say that was an improvement.
for all we know mingolet might not be able to handle the pressure, plenty of previously highly rated keepers like brad friedel, david james and chris kirkland turned into bags of nerves when they got here.

I suppose its just one of them wait and see type situations for now.

Can't say I know too much about the players we've signed or being linked with.
Its the defence Id like to see sorted soon.

He was never world class and when you fork out that kind of money on one player you'd expect that kind of status. So I'll maintain, his price preceded his pedigree which made him "high" profile.

i dont want to get into the semantics of this but carroll was one of the hottest properties in english football when we signed him, to say he wasnt high profile is ridiculous.
put it this way he wasnt an `aspas` signing where everyone had to start going to youtube and wiki to find out who the hell he was.

I honestly don't remember him being "one of the hottest properties in English football", his profile raised considerably because of the sum we paid. And I've a feeling we'll probably get better money for Aspas than we did Carroll.

I loved Brendan's take on the Suarez situation ,it was well delivered and he left little room for misinterpretation ,he was calm and collected
yet what he said concerning Luis honouring his contract was authoritative and direct . Its situations like these when the media are swarming
all over it like flies on shite that you need a clever response ,and Rodgers delivered one.

I think he will learn more from the failures of last season than people give him credit .......he said he wanted winners and players who would
give 100% for the cause and love the club as much as the fans do. I reckon we should afford the man and the club the kudos for acting quickly
in this transfer market ,and who knows maybe he's better at spotting winners than all those budding "Blog writers" and resident pessimists
out there.
