Is this the same Benitez who wanted to replace Xabi Alonso with Gareth Barry and who spent £20m on Robbie Keane? Who sold Arbeloa for a miserly £2m and then wasted £18m on Glen Johnson? Who signed Aquilani for £20m and never played him? Who sold Michael Owen for peanuts and brought in rubbish like Josemi and Nunez? I like Benitez as much as you do, but he wasn't perfect in the transfer market. My views of him in the transfer market is of someone who wasted a lot of money on stop-gaps and rubbish. Who sold good players and replaced them with utter rubbish.
As for Ferguson, he has made a lot of bad signings as well, also what is your obession with United? You're always harping on about them, you sound as bad as an Evertonian harping on about our club.
are you honestly trying to blame benitez for the owen situation?
and the alonso situation wasnt great but they happen, players and managers fall out all the time, bob paisley fell out with jimmy case and sold him when he had years left in him. case famously came back to anfield with brighton and knocked us out of the f.a cup, that was back in the days when we lost 1 home game every 2 seasons and whatsmore he ran the midfield, you could count on one hand the games where graeme souness was dominated by an opposition midfielder but that was one of them. case was a brilliant player, a 3 times european cup winner and we sold him when he was 26.
i could go right through all your examples but i wont bother, all i will say is that benitez took this club to 2 CL finals, a semi final and a quarter final in 6 years, he beat the likes of barcelona, real madrid and inter milan on their own grounds and had us standing toe to toe with clubs like united and chelsea who had far more resources than us.
united pipped us to the title by just 4 points when they had a frontline of ronaldo, tevez and rooney, and although people remember that we beat them home and away that season (including a 4-1 win at old trafford when the pressure was on) what people often forget is that steven gerrard and fernando torres only played as a pairing in half the games that season.
he couldnt have been that bad in the transfer market.
