A useful squad player perhaps, and perhaps I am being too greedy and comparing our first-team AND bench with our peers, but I really don't see how or who Benny would displace at Chavski, Arsenal or the Scum.....and for that reason alone, I would see Benny as being at least ONE of the squad who just isn't good enough...

Again, I've repeated this time and again, but I deeply and passionately believe that we need players of the character and commitment of old. The likes of Souness, Dalglish, McMahon. Players who are in your face, all over you like a rash, and who will suffocate you if you play the fancy stuff...Benny is not one of them (nor is Lucas for that matter, but that's for another thread..)

I think you're being a bit short-sighted, mate.  Every team needs their reliable squad players: the lads who you can call upon to do a job when the big guns are out or misfiring.  For me, Yossi epitomizes that type of player.  Skillful enough to play right across the "3" in our 4-2-3-1, committed to the cause** and one who can chip in with a few goals when on form.  Importantly, he's also professional enough to spend time on the bench without kicking up a ruck.  You ask how he compares to other players in our rivals' squads and I think he stacks up fairly well.  He's on par with the likes of Fletcher, Park and O'Shea at Man U, for instance.  None are world beaters but all offer a lot to the cause when selected and keep their heads down when not selected.  IMO, Arsenal and Chelsea suffer a little bit because they lack this kind of player.  Arsenal's squad is full of raw talent and less of the crafty veterans like Yossi while Chelsea have a lot more egos waiting in the wings.  No, for me, re-signing Yossi is good business because he's the consummate squad player.

**You suggest Yossi's not an in-your-face type and, while I agree he's not as physically imposing as some, he has shown an appetite for closing down the ball and pressurizing opponents in recent months.  Like Dirk, he's embraced our philosophy of defending from the front and has helped produce chances--our second against Arsenal being a prime example, where his pressing play forced a poor back pass, which led to a clearance shanked right to Kuyt, who then crossed for Yossi to bravely attack at the back stick for what many of us hoped would be the winning goal.

Benny is a good squad player and I'm happy to see that he's being offered a new contract. He can be a used as an impact sub. We need these kind of players too. Won't like to see him in first 11 next season at all though, we must buy good quality wingers.

Fairy nuff mate...
I accept your points as valid counter arguments. I don't necessarily agree with all of your opinions, but so be it....
Perhaps I have an overly romantic view of players of the past, but I think there's too little of it in the modern game, and certainly I believe that had we got some of it in the particularly sterile performances at home this season, we would be in a healthier position right now. Not to say that Benny is entirely accountable for those, but I think he's a poster boy for what I believe we have been missing for some time now....

Your a bit of a strange one Mark in these parts. You have an opinion, and then when someone disagrees with you, you kind of accept it  ??? It really is very odd, and I like the cut of your jib.

Gotta be better than going round in circles with neither side of the argument likely to change their views.

I wish Rafa would stop trying to make Benayoun into a winger, he is much better in a Gerrard like role. Rafa loves to play players out of position, he sees anyone who CAN play a position as an alternative eg Benayoun for Riera, which doesn't necessarily get the best out of players. Will we ever see the best of Babel while Rafa uses him as a left-winger? Is it because Babel is no good or no good in the role assigned him? I don't believe Benayoun is quite good enough to command a starting place, not really a winger and unlikely to displace Gerrard. Good sub, good fill-in for injuries and in his way a key player in the side in what he can bring without being a regular. If only the rest of the bench could contribute what he does, in fact that might even be one reason I'd use him as sub more than starter, a lack of alternatives to make an impact off the bench.

Totally agree mate. It's a forum, people are allowed to disagree, and to have an opinion. It's refreshing when you see someone give it the old "I don't agree mate but fair enough".

Jesus wept...there's far too much peace, love and goodwill on here today. I don't know what to be doing with with all this joie de vivre.
Can't wait till I get home and put the feet up in front of a roaring wife......back to some semblance of normality in any case...

Swings and roundabouts, mate.  On another day you might have got: "Benni's quality and if you can't see that, do one. "  It's time we just accept it: Newkit's seriously bi-polar. :D

in the little @rse end of nowhere city on the northern and rainy spanish coast where i live there is a spanish guy i know who goes to the same bar to watch the football. he's a sporting gijon fan, of course, and his english team is arsenal - thing is though that his favourite footballer in any team is yossi and he's the one who cheers loudest whenever he scores for us. he's a good 'un and i like him.

personally i'd like to keep yossi for the rest of his playing days. as a game changing tricky player who will serve his time on the bench when he needs to i don't think there is much better out there - on current form at least.
