Craig Bellamy cleared of assault

Wales and Liverpool footballer Craig Bellamy has been cleared of assaulting two women in a Cardiff nightclub.
The Cardiff-born 27-year-old was accused of assault against Sophie Palmer, 19, and her friend Holly Smith, 20, at the No 10 club in February.

The player was cleared by district judge John Charles after a five-day trial at Cardiff Magistrates Court.

His co-defendant, Franklin Lynch, 52, of Barry, was found not guilty of common assault against Ms Palmer.

The judge told the striker: "It was inconsistent to convict you with the serious discrepancies in the prosecution case and the two charges are dismissed."

The court heard that an exchange of words took place between the footballer and Ms Palmer in a corridor between to nightclub's VIP bar and VIP lounge some time between 0100 GMT and 0130 GMT on 5 February.

The prosecution alleged Mr Bellamy held Ms Palmer by the throat and grabbed Ms Smith's arm and pushed her into a wall after an exchange of words in a corridor at the nightclub.

But the player told the court he had been slapped by Ms Palmer following the exchange.

He said he had been "shocked" by the slap and did not respond before Ms Palmer was ushered away.

Speaking after the case, Mr Bellamy's solicitor, Matthew de Maid, said his client had missed training and games for his club, Liverpool, and the case had also affected his preparation for Wales international matches.

The £6m player will miss Liverpool's Wednesday night match against Portsmouth.

Mr de Maid added: "He has always said the allegations were false and that's been proved correct.

"He understands that given his profession he will get a degree of hassle."

Great news, now that's a huge weight off his shoulders. He can now get back to doing what he does best - scoring goals. He is bound to get stick now but he can overcome that.

Right now that's out the way, hopefully he'll start behaving himself. Although I do think he if wasn't a footballer he wouldn't got off without a charge.

so you think he was guilty then  ???

Talk about supporting our players ey?

I believe that he didn't do it. People just think he did because he has a reputation. Thiswhole thing was most likely just 2 slappers who thought they could make sum bob.

I never said he was guilty, I never said he innocent. Whether or not he did it no one will know except for him, either way I couldn't careless what he does in his private life. I support the player, not the man, that's the difference.

However what I said is true, footballers, celebrities, actors and musicians seem to be above the law in this country.

so doherty gets arrested and charged, niomi gets arrested and charged, jonathon king goes to prison, pennant goes to prison, anton ferdinand charged with assault, terry charged with assault, ferguson sent to prison, numerous drug charges for others, numerous drink related offences including driving. i could go on and on and on but i really can not be bothered listing celebrity names with either minor or major convictions. the way you speak all commoners go to prison while all celebrities dont. do you know how many people are arrested in the UK every day and released without charge, or how many people are found not guilty every day in court, i guarentee it will be a sizable number

i dont know you but reading your posts sometimes you come across as an @rse when it appears that you thing you are being blunt and clever

don't forget former West Brom striker Lee Hughes who was put in prison because he was drunk at the wheel and killed someone.

I'm not being an Arse about anything, but how has Pete Doherty not gone to prison? The guy is caught every week with drugs. It's no secret that the wealthy people can practically buy their way out of court, by hiring the best lawyers and what not. It's no secret the police force in this country is corrupt. I'm not the only one who thinks this either so you'll be calling a lot of people an Arse.

This is really going off topic here, Bellamy's been found innocent and he should now focus on his football and regaining his form.

you think the british police are corrupt, in 5 years as a policeman i never saw one police man take one penny of anyone, you should try living in asia mate if you think the british police are corrupt, typical comment from an idiot, who will then call the police when he has a problem.

you argument now seems to be that if you are a celebrity you should not go through the same legal process as everyone else, doherty should just be sent to prison for having drugs when the normal man on the street actually goes through the same process as celebrities.

and i aalso forgot to mention naseem hamed who also went to prison.

i really dont want to get into an argument with you on this but you are very wrong, its a typical comment form someone who doent know any better and just wants to criticise because he thinks its cool to slag the police off. try doing the job for one day mate and see how difficult is it, the biggest problem is idiots like you with their "havent you got anything better to do attitude"

just call it quits mate because i can continue this all day and i really cant be botherd dragging up facts and figures.i would rather you just educate yourself on the subject rather than preach to you.

(i know some police are dishonest but to categorise them all the same is a disgrace), and to say celebs get better treatment is just stupid

My hatred for the police comes from having several run ins with them in my teenage days. I have been wrongly arrested twice by the police once for apparently keying someone's car where I had the humiliation of been escorted into a police car in front of my family and friends, not to mention the neighbours, I was then arrested for defending myself from someone who started a ruck with me. Of course I tried to explain myself but no they were having none of it. I will never phone the police for anything ever again, I lost all confidence in the police after those two incidents.

I can appreciate the difficult job of being a police officer, I've seen the way people talk to you lot and how you can keep your cool without losing it is something I respect a lot of police officers for, but I do not trust the police one bit.

I’m not saying that celebrities should go through a different judiciary process, but I always feel judges are far too lenient with celebrities.  Pete Doherty is continuously caught with drugs, he gets a slap on the wrists by the judge and he’s released again, why is he not sent to prison for it? I’ve known people to get sent down for lesser crimes than what he’s been doing. Prince Naseem Hamed was sent down for what 8 months? That's great success (in a Borat voice).

You know better than I do about the ins and outs of the police force, but from my perspective this is how the police looks to me and I’m not alone in that either.

I will however leave it there mate, I don’t want to offend you anymore than what I have.

ok fair enough but can i just say one thing, when youj were arrested for keying a car i am sure they didnt just randomley knock on your door and arrest you, there must have been some belief. to solve some crimes innocent people will be arrested, there should be no shame in that. not all arrested people are charged or convicted, its a process to find the guilty person. also in the fight you need to understand that police were not there to witness the fight, they have 2 different stories to go on, i am sure if you had gone to the police first then the other guy will have been arrested and questioned.

trust me on this mate, there is a process.

with regards to never calling the police for help, i just hope your car never gets nicked or your house burgled because we both know you will be on the phone faster that fast to the police    :D

Could it be that this case was the reason for his lack of confidence on the pitch?
